i went to this exact fry’s on portage avenue and bought warcraft 3 batttle chest with the frozen throne

i take it home and install it. first cd installs fine. the 2nd cd for frozen throne literally cracks while i pull it out of the israeliteel case. i’m probably 14 and just wasn’t careful

i write down the cd keys, go back to fry’s, and return the battle chest and buy another one. they weren’t happy about it but i was a kid and they gave me a break

i ended up with 2 sets of keys and could play with my brother

Oh, yeah, I remember that day vividly. It was down in San Diego, early 2000s, when I decided to check out Frys Electronics for the first time. I walked in, browsed around, but didn't end up buying anything. That's when I overheard this German guy speaking firmly in German to his daughter who must of been 3, counting or something. It was quite a scene, made the whole place feel tense for a moment.

And then there's picrel if you've run out of solder, resistors or capacitors and need a same-day resupply at the markup of non-online presence and having to travel there.

I can't imagine more than one chain of picrel surviving, but I do imagine at least one will survive, due to the niche, but steady, demand described above.

They have a limited selection on hardware parts here, still. I'm quite sure I saw GPU boxes the last time I was there, around three months ago.
Mostly, they sell peripheries, like SD cards, heaphones, mice, cables, and all much much more expensive than online, but you've got it in your hands the moment you've paid for it.

i remember many a trip with friends on weekends going in to pick up parts for our computers or look at games or just explore cool computer stuff.
then i went in like 2 years before they closed down and they had pulled the far walls back, the store was like 1/4 its size, and it was all media crap. a tiny section of pc parts locked in cases you have to call someone over for, and it was all DVDs and video games and roombas and shit. then it closed and it was gone.

Folsom ca here. I used to love going to this place, the one in roseville ca primarily. I told my gf they always had the hottest latina and Russian chicks with the tightest outfits on in the front area of the store and she didn't believe me. So she went with me (this is about a year before they closed) and sure enough the HOTTEST latinas and Russian girls you could imagine were all up front and at the registers. She was like, "Now I see why you're always coming here" lol. Also the place was literally empty almost every time I shopped there. I used to get the mad catz rat mouses everytime they came out of with a new one and frys always had them, I collect mice. Rip frys. Also the roseville one had a train coming out of the building.

Fry's went to shit around the same time as NewEgg's downfall and amazon returns/shipping became not so shitty.

Every fry's visit was as follows
    >need router for one of our small offices
    >want a modem router combo
    >see one
    >sales man comes over trying to tell me how it's not dual band and really should be investing in dual band for a SOHO with ~15 devices ???
    >try to ask for cheap version that gets the job done
    >keeps insisting I buy a modem and router separate for 2x the price

    >need X many flash drives
    >some on sale no limit
    >frick it whatever
    >hey can I get 20x of these 8GB ones
    >no we can't sell that many
    >?????

    >stop price matching newegg at my store only for some reason

    >have to open CC account with them to do business orders on regular basis

    >prices higher than amazon with next day shipping

meh, only was good if you needed something like a PSU in a pinch otherwise the cities they were located in you could often get Amazon same day/next day delivery for the same price.
