I know some morons here will cry about "muh e-waste" but I really like this trend of going back to dedicated devices instead of using your phone for everything.

These are my daily carries, along with a physical journal. What dedicated devices do you use?

I think so? I heard that point and shoot cameras were becoming popular again, and dedicated music devices have been seeing a resurgence for a few years already.

      >the trend
not even doing it for yourself, but because it's trendy? people like you deserve to be lined up and shot.

I was doing this shit already before it became trendy. You kids just copied my style is all. have a nice day homosexual.

My daily carries are my librebooted x60, my old chode-sized Samsung phone, which I use as my dedicated music player; my GNU/knife, my proprietary keys, and a few packets of hot sauce.

Yes, in the sense that it's all for aesthetic reasons, and every normalgay who bought into it will eventually get bored of their toys.

this takes me back to like 2017 looking at the /edc/ threads we had on here every day. feel like i haven't seen one of them in years. they just died off. maybe the trend to using phone for everything just got too strong?

I really liked the Switch but I knew from the start that it's not really portable. It's huge, and it feels fragile with the way the controllers attach (and it is, don't let that shit flex). The Switch Lite was a HUGE improvement in terms of portability but it's still bigger than I would prefer. I want something I can fit in my pocket so I just stick to retro stuff.

Surprise, object made for one thing is better than jack of all trades device.

I have a 3ds for portable gaming, my phone is my music server and when I'm serious about photos I'll bring out the DSLR (old 50d with decent lenses). Besides that I draw a lot so sketchbook.

based. I take that's not an expensive camera? I don't know much about them. how is the quality compared to an average phone?

      Anonymous

That's a film camera, it's quality is as good as the lens can render, and 35mm film is able to produce insanely high resolution pictures

cool. I've been meaning to get one of those because I like to take pictures sometimes when I'm travelling (not very often), but in the immense homosexualry of our generation, my small-ish city has basically no camera-focused shops or stores.
I've looked into some old second-hand cameras that go for a couple of bucks on the internet, but I fear I might run out of film eventually because, again, there's nowhere I can buy that near me.

you can get film online easily, also you should learn how to develop film,
It's super fun, and allows you to do all sorts of creative shit :^)
downside is the chemicals are a bit yucky, and you need to open the film canisters and put them in a developing tank in a pitch black room
also managing chemical ratios, water temp, time, etc

          its worth it though

I bet it's fun. I also bet it's not going to be easy in the shithole that I live in.
just out of curiosity, in case you or someone else can answer, how does it compare to a digital camera? are those much worse than film? I feel like such a moron taking photos with my phone.

            Anonymous

Not that anon (I'm op) but it's a lot of fun. It makes you think more about what to shoot because you don't want to waste an exposure.

You don't have to develop it yourself if you don't have space. You can get them developed by mail if there's no shops near you that do it.
. how good it looks depends entirely on your lens and aperture (the same is true for digital). But the quality is better with film because no pixels.

Digital point and shoots get shit on by 35mm film point and shoots, (phones too, unless they're those extremely expensive sony point and shoots with the full frame 35mm sensor)
Film 35mm camers and digital ones are kinda on par, and are both extremely good, but digital cameras can cost a few thousand for the body, and a few more thousand for the lenses

the plus side, vintage film lenses are cheap, and work on both, and vintage film body's were made for them 😀
its a rabbit hole tbh, I think a basic old Canon, Pentax, Olympus, Nikon, FujiFilm, or any other popular brand film camera is fine (also Soviet era cameras and lenses too, they were copy's of western Leica and Zeiss lenses made by stealing factory schematics post WW2)
they're also cheap as frick, and a good intro to completely manual film photography that isn't nightmare expensive like old Leica film cameras, downside being worse reliability

            thanks

Most films have worse grain and much worse low light performance compared to a phone. Your typical Kodak Ultramax 400 or HP5 will have equivalent to 5MP at best.
Kodak and Fuji do have that great color science that's hard to replicate digitally though.

I don't remember the exact price I paid but I got a good deal. It would be hard to find a fully working one for a good price today. It's a Canon AutoBoy 2 from 1983, it shoots film. I like how the photos look but it might not be to your liking.

How often is it that you see someone carrying a katana on their waist? How many times has a buxom JK fallen down the stairs, breaking their fall on you, only say "kya! gomen'nasai~", and run off? Ever been felt up by an ojisan while riding the train? Are you in the military, or an English teacher?

Going back to old technology IMO is the opposite of E waste. E waste is buying some electronic toy, using it for a month, and tossing it away. Keeping old technology alive is much less wasteful

        >Keeping old technology alive is much less wasteful
Tell that to the homosexuals at the e-recycling centers. Those buttholes would rather resell their shit on eBay for a nominal price, or ship their shit off to the third-world rather than let you reuse shit that's going to be shredded anyway.

Good point. And not only is it less wasteful, but in many cases old technology is superior or on par with the modern stuff and is easier to repair (a lot of modern stuff can't even be repaired).

Ok, fair point, but using older stuff rather than newer stuff decreases demand for the newer stuff. Only slightly so, but it is still an effect. I wish more people would stick to their older phones, PCs, cameras, etc. instead of swallowing up whatever marketers decide to push out as "trendy" to the consumerist cattle. Using things for longer and throwing away less stuff is better than buying a new iphone/macbook/console every year. Will it eventually end up in a landfill? Yes, just as we will end up in graves one day ourselves. If you can prevent a computer from ending up in a landfill for that much longer, AND you get actual use out of it, it is not ewaste.

The problem with that is that sadly newer stuff is not made to last like before.

      >Camera
I prefer how the photos from my AutoBoy look over the photos from my phone. It also has a physical shutter button and a viewfinder - taking photos on a phone requires awkwardly staring through the screen and adjusting settings means annoying touch controls.
      >Walkman
I like the Analogue sound, and unlike my phone this actually has a headphone jack. And what if streaming services don't have what I want to listen to?
      >Game Boy
Mobile games are shit and emulating on a phone means shitty touch controls. If you want physical buttons then you either need one of those backbone controllers or you need to awkwardly strap your phone to an actual controller. Either way, that means you need an extra device in your bag if you want to play and if I'm going to put an extra device in my bag then I'm going to put an actual gaming device that plays real games.

You're a moron and you spend too much time on your phone.
