i don't. the industry has hardly changed in 20 years. instead of pushing a thin button into a thick rubber wad you're pushing a thick button into a thin rubber wad. these devices are engineered to withstand brutal abuse from moronic children and Black folk who violently throw the controller or otherwise attempt to smash it because they have no impulse control, they are not engineered to enable fast and precise inputs with tactile feedback

It's crazy how we forget things. The SNES and the Mega Drive had two of the best D-pads ever made - because the D-pad was critically important in that era. But now, the D-pad on Nintendo and Xbox controllers suck ass, and even one on the DualSense is spongy. Why? It's the same injection moulded plastic. The designs for good D-pads still exist.

That doesn't matter. People called it this way, like everyone.
Websites, magazines, pirate scene, gaymers you name it.
The emulator scene still uses this name in case you haven't noticed.

sad to say that i destroyed 4 psx dualshocks when i was learning to solder by trying to make my own arcade stick in 2009. they were dirt cheap from the used game store and i was moronic. I eventually got it working but the actual joints were piss-poor because I never properly heated the board itself, only the scraped contacts, and my cold solder blobs, which were only adhered by mechanical forces, broke off and took the paperthin contacts with them when stressed by the force of the overly thick and stiff wires pushing against the front panel each time i opened and closed it

I'm older than any of you and I never got why they called it that back then.
I've only today bothered to research why. It seems it was it's code name before release to distinguish it from the Nintendo Playstation failed project.

The left joystick is the main input device for modern games, so it baffles me that Sony kept it in the secondary position for 5 generations straight.
I would say it's good for 2D or retro games but the fact that it hasn't got a proper D-Pad even though the Nintendo patent expired back in 2005 also baffles me.

I always had a problem executing fighting game combos on PSX controllers.

Personally I think the XBox 360 is the perfect balance for game controllers. All it needs is hall effect analog thumbs. And the XInput API is very comfy.

However, just about every controller after the NES original will shatter from cheap plastic. The glowclowns who run the industry want you spending $50 every time you get angry.

    I'm very particular about controllers
SNES controller is probably my favorite classic controller. The D-pad on the Saturn is nice but I find it better for games where diagonals are required often.
I have like 35 different controllers and the one I use the most is the dualsense.

This could be /vr/ but now is a good time to discuss the gradual cheapening of controller parts + baffling design decisions + greedy battery shenanigans. All ruining what would otherwise be great controllers.

There are no controllers where thumbsticks rest above d-pad and face buttons, and it makes me mad.

Wii U Pro Controller does this. Sadly it's not very good for other reasons, such as an especially shit D-Pad and fragile bumpers that don't properly make contact so you have to press harder than the actuation suggests. I don't understand how they got this all correct on the Wii U screen gamepad (especially the D-Pad which was great!) and then fricked it all up on their pro controller. All they had to do was not change the underlying mechanisms but they did it anyway.

If you're alright with playing on mobile, or just having a gap in the middle of your controller, I recall a few telescopic controllers, the kind to put your smartphone on and turn it into a full handheld, have this layout. I use a Mocute 060 and it's pretty decent, so I'd recommend this...

pic was actually good in its first iteration, but nintendo demanded it be made cheap enough that clueless parents would buy it for their children and so it went from 128 bits per finger on 4 fingers to 2 bits per finger.
obviously this meant that it turned from an actual interface device into a NES controller with a stupid shape
