The Christian conception of idolatry varies among denominations (i.e. most Protestants tend to consider Catholics idolators for their veneration of Mary and other Saints) but generally equates to "any religious iconography that isn't Christian." If you're not a Christian, the notion of "idolatry" doesn't actually mean anything.

    Cult of Passion

Idolatry is you, one organism, trying to emulate another organism, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, even though you are not only not them, never met them yourselves.

False evolutionary path, neurotic, tribalish, which inherently isnt universal.

It's hard for me to believe that the Greeks literally belived that Gods were wandering in Mount Olympus. At least not the same platonic transcendental belief that Christians have, maybe an immanental belief to understand the forces of nature without supernaturality but I don't know,

How do you know they aren't real? They seem real.

there is no evidence, there is evidence of life and ministery and resurrection of Jesus tho, overwhelming even.

          >overwhelming even.
this is true, but it's all unverifiable hearsay, unfortunately.

you can say this for literally anything in sciences that we take for granted, nothing is absolute everything is probabilities.
Do we know everything and is every single scientifical theory true?

Go have sex with multiple women and tell me that adultery is not a sin after you get four different STDs.

some chaste men die young from cancer
some womanizers sleep with hundreds of women and die very late in their life
the fact that you have to resort to such conditional hyperbole in an effort to make unequivocal, objective statements of fact exposes your example as a farce

those chaste men will not have cancer if they follow other commadments, like no gluttony, both food and alcohol and drugs, and no envy and mental stress, which is a very strong factor in cancer, will have stable martial life and etc. (cheatings and all the stress that follows).
cancer is literally tenfold because of modernity and its embrace of sinning.
All in all happiness in life strongly reduces the probability of cancer.
And those womanizors might follow other commadments really well as well. albeit unintentionally.

            >cancer is a choice actually
            incredible
I used to look on at the kids at saint judes who were afflicted with cancer at a young age with tears in my eyes, thinking it was unjust that such innocent people were made to suffer so much. But now I've learned that they're actually all degenerate sinners who are probably pozzed, too and so basically they have it coming. Thanks, Jesus!

People wrote about Zeus too much for Zeus not to exist.

    >Is idolatry good or bad?
    it just is
    >Is anti-idolatrism a fundamental part of western culture?
it's not a white person thing, no, but if we're using "western" to mean "broadly christian" then yeah I guess so
    >Is Idolatry important in meeting the divine?
depends on your conception of spirituality
as an asatruar, the significance of idols is in their capacity to be a bridge between the mundane and the supernatural.
It's like how the axis mundi, Yggdrasil, bridges hel, earth, and heaven. An idol mimics the supernatural/divine and assumes, in a microscopically small way, the qualities of the supernatural, inviting it to enter into our world.
This is all to say that idols are not the res gestae, the "thing itself," but are rather conduits to divinity. Think of it like having a one-way walkie-talkie line to Odin.

    >>Is anti-idolatrism a fundamental part of western culture?
No, anti-idolarism was a sour grapes cope invented by ancient proto-heebs when their Canaanite idols got stolen by a conquering tribe

In the Bible God says do not make graven images of other Gods, he does not say do not make graven of me.
So I see no problem with Jesus statue in a Church, or chants and music and art in general.

Humans need to make images of what they don't know to spread that conceptualisation throughout their cult.
But in no way does it depict reality - just the person creating the image.
