I'm still comfy with my old Thinkpad.

T520 will last another decade at least.

I wanted a T520 but I had to settle for a W520, I couldn't find a T520 with a 1080p panel, a four-core CPU, and an iGPU. I don't like that the W520 is thicker has some Nvidia thing that I don't want, but at least I can disable that and run on the iGPU

you can replace the screen and cpu yourself

Never was able to figure out how to do a single click from a browser on a link and have it launch it as a stream in mpv.

I remember reading (I think on thinkwiki) that machines that didn't come stock with a quad-core had weaker VRMs or something, and that their motherboards misbehaved if you swapped in the 4C chip. I think there was some incompatibility around panels too but I forget the details. In addition to it just pain being a pain to find the correct model and do the swap.

Can you try remembering more about it? I don't know if it's the same issue, but I think that machines that came stock with dual cores cannot boot from battery alone if they're upgraded to a quad core. Makes no sense, because if there's one thing batteries are better at is at supplying power under high load.

They need to be plugged into a wall to work properly, if this had been an issue with stock quad core models lelnovo would have gotten so much shit back then.

I know how to say, download something with yt-dlp then view it in mpv, or even make a script to do that. But how to get say, Firefox, to assign that as a "handler" for a link to Youtube is beyond me.

I like the 1366x768 screen. I have coke bottle glasses, makes everything naturally bigger.

I don't care if I have to wear stupid glasses. And yes they're thick. So the lower-rez screen is a boon to me. I use a minimum 15 point font size in the browser too and a giant terminal font so big the display just barely makes 80x25 in xterm.

Lately I've been going back to bitmapped fonts, they are more readable. No way to do that in Firefox that I can tell, Chrome either.

        >2760qm
How's the heat? I want to upgrade mine to a 2860qm but I'm not sure if it'll be able to handle the heat. It seems there are at least two heatsink/fan combos, the better one is the all-copper AVC one, the other is some poorer qualoty one.

Also how can I avoid getting the spectre/meltdown bios patch? Fricking windows 10 keep trying to update the bios, I had to switch to Mint for the time being but really need W10.

My X230 is getting tired... 🙁

Is it even making proper contact? Tried disabling turboboost?

Also, if by any chance anyone reading this has done the mod from a single to dual pipe heatsink on a igpu model, did you put anything under where the gpu heatsink is supposed to make contact?

      X220 user here.
I can play 1080p 60fps VP9/h265/AV1 video no problem. YouTube works fine but is a bit sluggish so I use Invidious for that. Most video is still in h264 so it doesn't matter either way.
