Impressive Georgian home with a fascinating story – Glanhafren Hall

Glanhafren Hall is an impressive Georgian country house surrounded by glorious scenery and with the River Severn bordering its land it promises not only a superb lifestyle but an opportunity to become a part of its fascinating story. The Welsh author Eiluned Lewis who was born at the hall in 1900 wrote a best selling book “Dew on the Grass” which described her idyllic childhood at the hall and of which her sister wrote “…it cast a spell on her from which she never really awoke.” It had the same effect on her friend JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, who spent many holidays with his adopted children at Glanhafren and whose photograph can be seen in the book.

“We have lived here for ten years and have restored the house with love and passion. It has so many beautiful features rarely seen in a house of this size.” says Theresa.

“It is an exceptionally happy home that is both elegant and perfect for formal entertaining but at the same time is relaxed and comfortable. When you enter the spacious hallway and see the graceful spiral staircase you are aware of the style and luxury that will unfold in the house. The large and welcoming drawing room is a perfect example of its chic as the original wall mirror there once reflected the sophisticated guests at the tea dances held in this room. You can imagine everyone spilling through the doors onto the patio for evening drinks or wandering down to the river, something that a century later we love to do. Each room has its special qualities and all have stunning views across the fields and woodland. It is blissful to open the curtains to a view of our foals playing in the fields.”

“The delights of the grounds enhance the life here,” says Peter.

“The space in the house and garden give children total freedom and we all have endless fun, swimming and fishing in the river. The river has its own special beauty and is a haven for wildlife whilst every spring its banks are a carpet of bluebells and primroses. The lawns, orchard and woods are oases of tranquillity where stress falls away and the land is perfect for the horses. The stables and ménage are conveniently sited and if we were not enlarging our horse breeding enterprise we would not be moving. We can walk into Newtown which is a picturesque market town, well provided with shops, schools, recreational and leisure facilities whilst Chester and Shrewsbury offer pleasing alternatives. Glanhafren Hall has given us a wonderful lifestyle and we have been privileged to be the guardians of such a wonderful property. It is the stuff dreams are made of.”*
