Do they have multiple AI engines for different SKU's? Lunar Lake was supposed to be pretty low on TOPS, like 10. What the hell does "up to" mean in this context, Intel?

I've been reading more and more about it since I saw this, solidly surprised and impressed! This feels like Tiger Lake 2.0, but way better. I'm excited. Only somewhat peeved about it being limited to 32GB but with everything on package, I get it. It took Apple 12 months to get a max chip to support 64GB.

I very much doubt that P-cores will use the 8MB SoC-level cache. It's there solely for the E-core cluster that lacks L3.

          Anonymous

          It's used in some cases.

            Anonymous

            Based on what?
SoC level cache can't be a victim cache - it's too small for P-core L3. It might be used as an exchange buffer between iGPU/NPU/E-cores and P-cores, but highly unlikely it's "L4" or "L5".

            Anonymous

P cores may not use it directly but it's important for fast memory access without going to another level of the memory hierarchy and fetching it from DRAM. Intel took their sweet time integrating something like this when ARM basically trial run and then had everyone do it nearly 6-7 years ago.

            Anonymous

So you agree that it's not a "5 level cache structure", great.
P-cores will not use the 8MB SoC cache to access DRAM because 1) it's too small 2) it's the same level as P-core L3
Intel's previous SoCs were already using what your picture is describing. They just called it "L3 cache" because it used the Bing Bus with every P-core being a stop along with every 4-core E-core cluster, and the iGPU.
Lunar Lake ditches the Bing Bus so there has to be a communication buffer, and that's the SoC level cache.

            Anonymous

I'm not the same anon, as you were talking before, I was just trying to provide additional context to what you are saying. However, I believe as it is implemented on ARM SOCs, it is indeed a last level cache that is shared by every single component, so the P cores can shuttle stuff there to avoid memory access but it is unlikely to be the exclusive user of it and hog enough space from everyone else and yes, it can use its own L3 for most other things. No one knows how it will operate on Lunar Lake, Intel has yet to clarify and some of the architectural details are still under wraps. It could be like ARM or they can do it so it does act like a victim cache but it isn't a 5 level cache system that integrates directly into the CPU's cache hierarchy.

Everyone said x86 was deprecated, but based intel proved everyone wrong. Intel won. x86 for another 50 years!

      Anonymous

x86 will only be deprecated if someone else actually beats AMD and Intel, with 'open' hardware (ie. not Apple, but not necessarily foss like riscv) over a period long enough to make people want to move.
Only a handful of companies are willing to spend the R&D money on developing anything on AMD/Intel's level. POWER is still around but very expensive and worse, Apple's ARM is good but it's exclusive to Apple, Snapdragon is trying to compete, but until it has a socketed CPUs, it's a toy.

Intel and AMD have no reason to move now, they own x86 and no one else is allowed into the club (except a few old relics and the inheritors of their licenses) and since no one else wants to put money into socketed CPUs, it's x86's game.

        >Intel felt they were permanently ahead of everyone else so they stopped caring about technical advancements and focused on social issues instead

In many fields they still are, but they failed to realize that most people don't need the latest and greatest. Even a CPU from 20 years ago like the Core 2 Duo series can do most day to day tasks in almost every industry, including military. Older x86 clones(on sanctioned countries like Russia), ARM and recently even RISC-V are simply "good enough".

Celestial is the last shot at getting gaming focused silicon from Intel. If the market is dumb and rejects it because the brand name and the better performance at the top end, client discrete is just going to be Intel throwing defective silicon at the gaymers who have no better option at the price brackets Nvidia isn't touching at $500 and below. Fat chance that will happen, Intel's doing really nicely as a budget workstation card, being faster than the equivalent AMD and Nvidia cards at that price bracket for video editing and compute. Unfortunately, not 3D as Intel has no equivalent to OPTIX but neither does AMD. Intel's investment in oneAPI is underappreciated but understandable since it will take a lot more to rival Nvidia's SDKs and get buy-in from others.
