5 minutes of 44100 Hz FLAC song would be ~40 MB. 40MB * 8000 =~ 320 GB. Modern smartphones could have up to 1 TB of storage. If you really care about your library you can fit it in your phone and you'll still have plenty space for everything else.
Not to mention that you can set up your own streaming server with fat HDDs giving you practically unlimited space while you're still own things.

YouTube's 128 kbps Opus can store the same amount of songs in 32 gb

Imagine your music taste being shaped by a machine. What a dreadful existence.

        this is dumb and gay.
if you want to download music you should use a soulseek client like nicotine+.

there is no fricking way that youd want to listen to ALL of those songs at anytime and it wouldnt ruin some of them or that your mid on some of them

Any normal music listener just does all of this now. It's not like I will know what I want to listen to in the day or always know how I'll find something new.
        >10 years of Spotify algo finds me nice things now.
        >Anything word of mouth, lastfm or rym probably on Spotify.
        >Joni Mitchell removed her albums? Nicotine+ & save it on local storage. Same for bandcamp-only releases.
        >AFX DJ mix? Soundcloud or it's probably on yt-music.

I've tried a home server before putting music on is such a burden. It always feels like I'm putting myself in a box. If someone knows a solution where I can dynamically dl and add stuff inside the client then I'm listening.

Genuinely what's wrong with just going like "oh cool I like this song" then yt-dlp -x and putting it inside a directory?
Or better yet a directory categorized by folders by mood? You really need a gui that shows what you're listening to or is there some other reason not to just mpv --shuffle --loop on a directory?

There's a little JS request page on it too so that if my friends/family want something and I feel like finding it for them I'll fulfil their requests for little bounties. One friend made me brownies for finding a really good copy of Casablanca. Another bought me a bottle of wine for finding her a copy of some weird Icelandic movie she saw on an airplane a few years ago. Being a privateer is pretty fun. You should try it. Tell streaming companies to suck your dick. For the $20+ a month you'd spend to access their dogshit pozzed libraries, you can build you own and see a return on investment within a couple years.

I used to do this, then I started releasing my own amateur music, and I realized just how bad the youtube compression is. You don't really notice unless you spend ages mixing a track and then it suddenly sounds like shit on youtube. It's a night and day difference between youtube and spotify. I did a size-by-side comparison between Deezer and (free) YouTube and the audio quality of YouTube is a lot worse than even the most compressed Deezer format.
I even suspect YouTube bodges the audio on purpose to avoid copyright claims, just like how to purposely frick up 1080p video in order to sell "premium".

No idea if the audio quality of "premium" YouTube is better though.

YouTube's 128 kbps Opus is completely transparent to 99% of people
you are just moronic and aren't listening to the ytm auto generated music uploads that are sourced from the same lossless wav that gets sent to every streaming service.
      >I even suspect YouTube bodges the audio on purpose to avoid copyright claims
??? what copyright claims are there to avoid? YouTube Music (and even regular YouTube in most cases, through the content id system) is paying royalties just like every other streaming service
      >No idea if the audio quality of "premium" YouTube is better though.

both sides of the cloud v local music argument are flawed and non of you homosexuals want to acknowledge the drawbacks of your chosen methods. I get wanting to carry around your entire library. mine is only ~4K songs and I do carry it with me. but there isn't a simple tool that allows free and seamless downloading of music and have it integrated into your library without extra steps. spotify is great for discovering new stuff, but you don't own any of that shit and you're stuck with the service because you'll lose at least some of it if you ever want to stop using the service. I've just been adding to a playlist on youtube/spotify when I hear something new that I like and occasionally run youtube-dl or deemix on the playlist to have it locally. also
