thats on average one paper every 9.125 days
the vast majority of these, if not all of them must be on utterly trivial shit that doesnt even deserve the ink it was written with

Damn, that makes me feel self-conscious since I've taken over 7 months on one topic.

It shouldn't, this is the science equivalent of explosive diarrhea.
If you produce on solid paper in your whole life, you're still ahead of the vast majority of "researchers"
The only problem is that you'll probably starve to death.

And I checked out of curiosity - the paper for which he got Turing award was in a "diarrhea" year with 30+ publications.
The man likes to see his name - maybe is it vanity. Maybe most of them be inconsequential.
But he most definitely has walked the walk, before doing the talk.

It says nothing to the quality of the papers. At this level he has multiple teams working under him each doing the heavy lifting, that he consults or manages, then when they're ready to publish he gets to slap his name on it as a main contributor. He's enjoying being at the top of the pyramid scheme that is academia.

yeah this. If he just simply named a good paper he published recently (assuming there is one), it would have been a much more effective argument. Not that elon's response makes any sense either

      This to the point.

I'd reckon if he published ~4-5, it would have more credibility. Something that someone really worked to published. But one paper every 9 days is likely just paper milling and are likely worthless or have near zero actual contribution.

80 papers is wonderful, even having 1 in your entire lifetime is great

What people are concerned about is that all of his research goes through and is approved by ~~*Meta*~~ which guarantees the the science is basically corporate propaganda.

I respect his contributions to GAN's but that was when he was a no-name scientist. He should have been much more humble in his response.

it is very easy when you're a professor
literally all students must do a paper and the topic is chosen by the professors, you must also add your professor/mentor into the paper
so all he did was give 80 students a paper topic and then got added to the authors

      phd student here
      this
being a professor is all about taking credit for lesser grad students’/researchers’ work
especially since it’s LeCun; he won the Turing award and plenty of people will be actively gunning to add his name to their paper, even if all he does is barely skim it beforehand
i don’t think he’d put his own good name on a paper without at least doing that
so it’s not out-of-the-ordinary to have that many publications, nor does it mean that those papers were rushed or of bad quality
all that said, I think LeCun is a great researcher and definitely much more knowledgeable about cutting-edge ML than Elon

So, you are suggesting that Yann LeCun is incapable of reviewing one paper (many of which are probably shorter and/or workshop papers) every 9 days? There is nothing inherently wrong with “80 papers in 2 years” as the head of a massive (and massively-funded) industry research lab, even if “senior authorship” doesn’t mean what you think it does.

It's not about number of papers. It's about impact factor.
China produces tens of thousands of papers every year. Now how many Nobel laureates or similar individuals do they have?

Besides, Elon also has a point. It's not even about papers at all. Science is about reproducing result. A random twitter post with original research that can be reproduced is worth more than any research paper that nobody can recreate.

Peer reviewed papers as a metric for scientific achievement is a relatively modern bullshit system, created for the sake of competing for grants. The great Greek, Renascense and Illuminist minds that build the scientific foundations for modern society didn't publish peer reviewed papers. They published books and just let the scientific community judge by themselve by replicating their works.

  37. 2 weeks ago

80 papers in 2 years is quite a lot. However, there's ways to pump up that number. The biggest is simply to be an academic advisor. Did your grad student write a paper? Did you advise them about what to add to the paper, and maybe do some minor spelling/grammar editing? Congrats, you're an author on that paper. Do you have 10 grad students pumping out a paper every 3 months? That's 80 papers in 2 years. Go you and your bad self!

You can also count papers that are published to lesser venues, such as workshop papers. It doesn't count for much during tenure review, but Twitter is not your tenure review. Just count any paper no matter how small. Remember, the words you used were "technical papers".
