No, at the level Joyce is at you aren't using general intelligence anymore, you have a hyperspecialized talent in the one thing you are doing. Same with people like Von Neumann or Ramanujan. Like Einstein they have intelligence to maybe understand Kant but not to overcome Kant (for Joyce substitute Kant with Aquinas). Joyce just has a natural talent for writing a book like Ulysses or the Wake, but in terms of actually understanding what he is doing Pound or even Beckett has him mogged.

      >like Von Neumann
von neumann excelled at a bit more than one thing

He had exceptional mathematical ability and used it to brute force other disciplines. Not saying he didn’t also have very high general intelligence either, but simple intelligence just stops being useful at that level

I wouldn’t say that, as he was proficent in general logic, economics and language learner outside of mathematics at a very young age. Although, you can say, that having an amazing ability to do math and invent would make those a breeze to. His most impressive report as a youth is asking “What are you calculating?” to his mother in Ancient Greek at the ripe age of 5.

Von Neumann lacked creativity and imagination and always felt insecure about it, as his peers who were far less intelligent than him but accomplidhed more due to their vision.

if you take the opposite of what this guy wrote that's the truth. very good parody bait.

I don't think that comparison is fair because Joyce wasn't an idiot savant tbh.

Ezra Pound said he didnt think he was very smart but he had the greatest belief in his greatness as a writer

Witnessed. His belief shows throughout his work. I mean just look at his self-insert (S.D.).

It is all the same. Von Neuman was the most powerful mind in many fields. Just because a person only does one thing, you can't assume, "oh well he is only smart at writing" or "he isn't that smart he is just really good at computation".

No, because he had a prostitute wife that he bumfricked every night and an academic career. The smartest authors in history were probably autistic cripples and NEETs like Homer and Nietzsche that had nothing to do aside from acquire knowledge and tell stories.

We know nothing about homer, moron. One who sequesters himself away from life not dealing with humans or society can never write worthwhile stories.

    He was pretty smart.
    >This is not the place to examine the strange problem of the life of Oscar Wilde, nor to determine to what extent heredity and the epileptic tendency of his nervous system can excuse that which has been imputed to him.
    >Wilde’s letters to his friends were read in court, and their author was denounced as a degenerate obsessed by exotic perversions.
    >But the truth is that Wilde, far from being a perverted monster who sprang in some inexplicable way from the civilization of modern England, is the logical and inescapable product of the Anglo-Saxon college and university system, with its secrecy and restrictions.

    Without a doubt
It's surprising that a small irrelevant nation produced such a monumental genius

It depends on how you define 'smartest', I suppose. Joyce may certainly be the most learned novelist ever, his knowledge and understanding of Western literature, languages and history was probably greater than any other writer. The only rival in English is probably John Milton in this regard.
However if 'smartest' is just a synonym for 'best', I prefer Shakespeare and Cervantes, neither of whom were classically educated. Joyce is remarkable inasmuch as he entered the agon with Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, the Irish literary tradition before him, etc.

No, of his contemporaries Ezra Pound was smarter. And in the history of western civilization you can find a bunch that mog the frick out of Joyce, specially if you count philosophers.
