Yes. Who the actual frick does this except homosexuals, pretentious women and boring buttholes reading thick Ken Follet tomes??
A bar is a social environment. Even if you don't partake in it, it's werid to outright reject. Sit at the back, watch the TV or muse to yourself. Reading at the bar is cringe.
Writing is permissable, though, so long as it's written with pen and paper... people who bring their laptops to bars are equally as cringe.

Cope, autists. Reading books at the bar won't succeed in convincing women that you're a misunderstood genius. If you want to read and have a beer, read and have a beer at home like everyone else.

All I see is cope... women or not, it's weird and only social morons do such things. It's the same as sitting on your phone at a football game, or having earphones in at the dinner table. I'm sorry you guys are too autistic to realise this.

i like doing this, even at noisy dive bars (though best at a quieter wienertail bar). you have to already be a social person to make it work. accept you're not getting a fully focused experience that will very likely be interrupted (this may even be the goal). i doubt i'd ever take a notebook and study some dense text but this works just fine for inspectional reading. makes good conversation if someone likes what you're reading, and if they don't know it they'll probably leave you alone

reading is an antisocial activity but having something to do in the interim of conversation is absolutely fine. beats just scrolling through your phone or whatever

At the bar? Yes. At a table by yourself, still weird but not as weird. Bars are loud. It's like trying to read a book at a concert. But if you're alone at a table it's less weird, and if it's a quiet bar, it's acceptable.
You really need to specify the type of bar you're going to and at what time.

Bars are a social affair. You go to drink a coupla shots, listen to music, talk to some people, escape your wife or your kids or both, and I doubt the lighting would ever be conducive to reading your book. You'd also have roisterous folks bumping against you, spilling their drinks on your book, etc.
Maybe in the right pub, sure, but even then a booth is more appropriate.

      NO.
I WILL occupy an entire table to smoke and drink beer by myself

Yes. If you're not at the bar to socialize, why are you at the bar? Just drink at home
Reading in restaurants while dining solo is based though, as long as they aren't filling up
