an early form of user-hosted, gatekept forums where filesharing was rampant. and I guess it still exists for some reason totally not related to pedophilia and fringe politics

          I can't download it?

No. It's genuinely not worth pursuing in 2024, indexers are ass and providers are sketchy as frick.

It is basically you write a message and send it to a server. This server shares the message with let's say 5 other servers.
If you have access to one of the servers you can read the message.
        People use it for communication.
Then someone thought: "Hey, one can send a file if you convert it to text and split it into 100 messages (the number is only an example; limited size of a message).

Is Gnutella still a reasonable choice for file sharing in 2024? Are Gnutella networks even still around?

I have considered making an implementation as part of Kurumi MaidCard, but was under the impression that Gnutella is dead?

      >Is Gnutella still a reasonable choice for file sharing in 2024?
No, you're better off with emule
      >Are Gnutella networks even still around?
Yes, you can install gtk-gnutella, setup port fowarding, run it for a few hours then restart it in supernode mode where you can see all the networks search traffic scrolling by for shit and giggles

        >run it for a few hours then restart it in supernode mode
You can do supernode immediately. There seems to be 25 in total at this very moment lmao.

        Why emule?

        >estart it in supernode mode where you can see all the networks search traffic scrolling by for shit and giggles
This seems like bad design. Why was this functionality included?

          >Why emule?
Because it has more users, content and better protocol

          >This seems like bad design. Why was this functionality included?
Because the gnutella protocol search is pretty inefficient flooding nodes with the plaintext keywords, hence the need for supernodes to manage searches.
Gtk-gnutella later cobbled on a DHT, but the ancient protocol still remains.

Can't really compare the two as eMule is purely server based.

Just use torrents. There's a reason they became popular enough to almost kill traditional P2P networks.

IDK what the current ones are, but p2p networks still just... exist. They never went anywhere, they just have fewer users now.

I remember downloading this many years ago. I wanted to see if there were any good movies, I searched for "mp4" and, well, he absolute majority of the results weren't exactly Hollywood movies. I've been wanting to visit those beaches in Crimea ever since though.
