Might actually use less power than the fuel usage of navigating a parking garage.

        >less power than the fuel usage of navigating a parking garage.
You know what uses less power than that?
Not driving into an area so dense that it doesn't have space for surface level parking.

Average IQfy is affraid of using 3D space.
As if creating a 2D plane serving the same capacity is somewhere near smart.

it's not a "parking" garage, these are all new shiny cars by one manufacturer VW/vauxhall
this really is just storage for pickup

They are used as parking garages in many areas.

it's called a counterweight moron, it only has to overcome friction

    >Is this a gimmick?
No but it was never meant to serve the average joe since 1 elevator is a single point of failure and would create long waiting queues. I think this stores new cars for customers to pick them up on sheduled appointments.

I once was there in the german Autostadt, but didn't see this device. A valet would bring us the newly manufactured car.

First of all, it must be maintained by humans and I don't see how they access it, so that's another flaw.
But I was talking about the escape of the cars - it is impossible to evacuate them if shit hits the fan. If one burns - everything will burn.

          There are ladders and things.

I mean, if a car catches fire in a parking lot you don't go up to nearby cars and try drive them away either. Cars also don't tend to spontaneously combust all that often.
And even then, fire suppression systems can be installed.

Well, you don't "drive them", you tow them away.
            >Cars also don't tend to spontaneously combust all that often.
Fire safety inspectors would love to hear that.

these don't work on lithium-ion batteries

They do when you're in an indoor setting like this.
Much easier to starve out the fires.

Continuously investing in car based infrastructure just absorbs land with no upper limit and discourages more efficient land use. And what land is used to accommodate cars, is quickly ruined due to the realities of weight based damage. A very space efficient parking garage will still attract more cars and that space efficiency will quickly be lost as they make everything nearby less space efficient.
Ideally a closely packed city doesn't have to deal with that many cars at all and can rely on more efficient modes of transit.
      >muh Black folk, you can't possibly have transit because of all the Black folk
      Take your meds.

Just from being in places with parking garages this would be unusable from 7-11am and 3-7pm. Maybe if it has multiple arms.
