this, some of the channels in efnet have deep history and culture rivaling IQfy that is only observable by word of mouth as it hasn't been added to knowyourmeme and other moronic normie accessible archives.

Some channels will link to protected tinychat streams or other niche estoteric shenanigans that are absolutely wild beyond measure. The hacking shit and petty ddosin/gayops are always hilarious as well. The craigslist trolling and gang stalking streams are top tier.

I'm not going to spoonfeed, nor is there any meme page, wiki, or r/irc page to help you side step the initial time investment and social interaction barrier.
But yeah, the mentioned #LRH channel is a great start. Try other popular channels, and preferably ones for things you're genuinely interested in.
If you're a highly political troony furry like 40% of gen z chatters seem to be and you intend to chat like a moron, I recommend not directly connecting with your residential IP address. Some of the channels regrettably have spin off discords for the younger folk, which may be more your speed.

it has the same issues as email but it's over engineered dogshit with a fricking separate RFC for every basic feature. In theory, it is perfect. In practice, none of the servers are interoperable and none of the clients work with any of the servers.

It's so weird that many open source projects are actually using Discord now.
Like GNOME actually uses discord instead of IRC, a proprietary protocol for which only proprietary clients exist, that's so weird.

meanwhile the app itself refuses to let anyone browse more than one server at a time, unlike irc, so you end up making a second account and hacking the instance to double up just so you can look over the other servers you used before your job forced you into theirs.

            Sure.

Efnet has decent activity, but it's mostly cringey Black folk. Like IQfy but way gayer. Mostly on #lrh, #chases (no idea what this channel is about) and #computers.

Snoonet is also pretty active. Mostly r*dditors, but they seem way less anal about moderation. Recommend it.

            #chatters in Rizon seems decent.

darkscience was founded by a Hacker News type. It has three decently-sized channels and the discussion seems nice and free of zoomer cancer.

IRCNet seems to be full of boomers.

ICQ-Chat is absolutely comfy. #Chat is buzzing with activity to the point messages appear faster than you can read them.

I'm still exploring but this is what I have found so far.

Why on Earth would I beg some random homosexuals to tolerate me just to chat about the weather on IRC? And what's up with random neckbeards acting as if they were members of the Knights Templar?

This. Email is actually great for communication, there's history, replies, threading, and if your client supports HTML you can include pictures with your shit.
I can't do letters though, I never own stamps and my post box doesn't accept outgoing mail.

Here's the thing: When someone is acting like a moron, I'd like to call them out for being a moron. Listservs are too PC nowadays, and it only takes one triggered shitlib to wage total troony cancel culture war against you for wrongthink. IRC has history, sure, but not that many people log and there's more anonymity than email.

I miss all of the hours I used to spend on IRC back in the day. But I don't want to go back, because I am sure that there is a better (read: more secure, more functional, more robust) protocol / system available now. But there's so many to research (XMPP, Matrix, Signal, Telegram, ...) that I can't bring myself around to spend hours trying to weigh them all out, which feels somewhat obligatory if you want to evangelize to your friends with confidence. They're probably not even all targeting that same niche, but that has to be researched as well, and this isn't even counting more esoteric competitors, or having to look through alternative clients, e.g. Gajim.
I hate things like this, where it feels like despite technological advancement, one's ability to do basic tech-related tasks is actually more of a chore than it used to be.

NEETs saying that irc is not dead is the same form of cope as retrooners saying that BSSs are still usable. Both groups cant handle modern day reality too well so they just blatantly lie while still knowing that they cant isolate themself from the modern world 100% of the time.

    /g/:
    > Waaa, the internet used to be so cool and fun back in the 90s, but now its shit and sanitized since it was made available to corporations, women and third worlders. You used to need to have an IQ over 100 back in the day to keep these people out! But Apple and smart phones opened it up to everyone!

    Also IQfy:
    > IRC is dead! It doesn't have popular appeal or a nice user-friendly front end. You have to actually configure it yourself? Lol, good luck getting people onto your servers! You should use discord, its much more normie friendly!

Basically, the very reasons you deem IRC to be 'dead' are the exact same reasons I want to be on IRC. To keep midwit homosexuals like you away.

Its like going to a nice family dinner and complaining its sucks, and they should unlock the front door so the meth addicted homeless man can come in and join you, since that would mean your dinner is a success. You do know there are other ways to measure the utility of something other than just the raw volume of normie scumbags you can attract to it right?

If the world were a just place, every home would have a microserver behind the router that handles all of these should-be-trivial tasks: email, LAN file/data transfers, Dropbox-like file syncing over the Internet, IRC/chat message storing, small website hosting, backups, etc. Instead, this is the domain of only the most dedicated hobbyists, and the only recourse for a general member of the public is to rent out time/space on corporate servers for all of the above.
The Internet will never progress until it is firmly in the hands of the people. Unfortunately, since even beginner distros of Linux aren't robust enough to not filter some sizeable fraction of people, this will likely not happen in the coming decades.

      Anonymous

      >If the world were a just place, every home would have a microserver
That's a utopia where everyone has the knowledge, intelligence and inclination to manage such a system, we don't live in that world, most people are moronic so the solution is for corporations to manage these things and it's the most efficient way to do that is to take away control and centralize into corpo servers, this is why Discord exists and it's the most used platform it couldn't be otherwise.

        Anonymous

Yeah, the issue is that the systems weren't made easy enough to set up. Browsers are extremely complex, but you can just install them like anything else and then you're off to the races. Although they can be customized and maintained in myriad ways, for most people they just work as expected out-of-the-box. Unfortunately, they and other major software have lots of funding, so they can have near-universal support and capabilities.

But people in the FLOSS community only rarely have the time or inclination to make their software accessible to the general member of the public. This is unfortunate, because (unless intended, as it may be in some cases) this creates a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy where adoption will always remain low, and this in turn prevents the software from gathering attention, adopters, and in turn, contributors. I think if people could just install as easily as Chrome a mail server that addressed most of their needs and had a browser interface similar to Gmail or whatever, plenty would do it. Even in this thread, a protocol as old and simple as IRC, with many possible clients, still requires tinkering like "just set up a bouncer" to have support for merely a minimal-expectation feature set.
