Whenever I start from a standstill, there's a 50% chance that my car won't rev up within the first 0.5 seconds of me pressing the gas pedal and change an easy squeeze into a tight and terrifying maneuver.
It will constantly do weird shit with its shifting pattern, suddenly shift down and rev up for no reason or get really confused when I brake due to the guy in front of me and then immediately go for the overtake.

I never understood why multiple graphics cards in a system couldn't independantly drive their connected monitors allowing for something like a high end gpu to drive only your monitor that does all your gaming, while having a piece of shit in another slot that just does your other 2 monitors that are just an internet browser and a video player.

What do you mean, couldn't? You totally can drive multiple monitors from multiple graphics cards. I'm not sure to what degree rendering load is distributed among them though, I think the OS may just draw everything on one card and then just copy the image for other monitors over to other cards or some such. It's a pretty interesting topic but not one I've looked into in-depth. My main desktop runs 1 monitor off of the Radeon iGPU and the rest off my 4090 though. Yes, I even have both AMD and NVIDIA GPU drivers installed at the same time and it all works.

i think that's what i was thinking of. that it was possible to do, but you seemingly didn't gain anything from doing so outside of "more ports to plug a monitor into". I don't know if that's changed in recent years or not.

Well on Windows at least you can assign a GPU on a per-program basis. Really not sure if there's something you can do on a per-monitor basis. Doing it per-monitor sounds really difficult since windows can be moved at any time, how are you going to switch out the GPU while a program is actively using it? Not sure whether that's a thing since it sounds like a huge pain in the ass to implement support for this and I don't think there's much benefit. The entire memory content of the application and all associated context would need to move not only from one GPU to another, but possibly also from one driver to another too.

            >per program gpu selection
that in a sense sounds similar to eartrumpet (an aftermarket windows audio/volume selector) to me, which isn't available for use on windows prior to 10, and even then it still doesn't work perfectly. is it via an aftermarket program, or included in windows by default?

            Anonymous

Included by default, it lets you select between the "high performance" and "power efficient" GPU, it originated as a feature for laptops with both iGPUs and dGPUs but it now works on regular desktop PCs too.

Also the features EarTrumpet has are available in stock Windows too, it's just that EarTrumpet has a MUCH better UI. Windows can set per-application volume by default and it can assign playback and recording devices per-application as well, it's just that those settings are buried in some sound config shit and not easily available.

You can do that. But games freak out when they don't have focus, so the additional monitors are of limited use when gaming.

          you can do this
i've been doing this for years, i've got a 3070 powering my main monitor and my old 1080ti powering four auxilliary screens. i've even done it with an amd rx580, so mixing and matching cards or brands doesn't matter.
only issue is sometimes alt tabbing out of fullscreen apps can be buggy. but many games even let you pick which GPU to run on.

nvlink/sli/crossfire was to have two GPUs sharing the same rendering load, but if you wanted each card to render seperate loads you just take them out of the link.

Oh, it's actually plausible now? I mostly game in borderless windowed (or even windowed mode sometimes), which is where the frickery probably occurs. I know that mpc-hc and its variants for example, get all pissy when it comes to rendering the currently playing video if I try and move them across screens, while vlc is fine for example, so I do wonder how 'shit that crosses over into another screens rendering territory' would work out.

I'd actually like to consider such an option since I roll with 3 monitors from one gpu and while I haven't done any extensive testing or comparisons, I recall that running multiple monitors did come with a gaming performance hit way back.

Actually had this setup at one point, by using dedicated GPU and iGPU to run more monitors than either could handle on their own.
It caused Windows to have some really weird glitching going on in certain scenarios.

Also, Linux expects all screens to run in a single framebuffer, as that's how the drivers are written. That's why you can't do multi-monitor in the kernel console, something that I researched extensively when I was trying to eradicated all bloat down to the core.
You'd probably get two separate framebuffers that cannot interact if you run this setup. I wonder how HID devices would react here and whether a display server would even allow you to run two instances.

You can do this with GPU passthrough (in qubes os for example). You will actually have to attach the flu to a whole VM though

gpu passthrough was something I'd always looked at for vms, but given that vms always seemed to run a bit like ass, even with my current system, I never bothered (but this is windows). seems more like a thing that'd be viable on linux by comparison. I also once looked at the viability of running my os at the time (win7) off of a ramdisk, but that never eventuated either mostly for practicability reasons.

you can do that on Linux, but I doubt it would be easy in qubes (though I still don't know how to do shit on xen/qubes without having to customize parts of the system manually... Or if it's possible at all). In Virtualbox you would simply need to move the disk image to a ramdisk filesystem and run it from there, or move ~/.Virtualbox to the ramdisk (this would also move the temp files vbox creates when running)

It worked mostly fine on Linux with my old AMD R9 270 and Intel iGPU PC running KDE. If you switched to a vty with Ctrl+Alt+F2 it would freeze the iGPU with whatever framebuffer was last pushed to it until I went back to xorg. Never ended up testing any games on the iGPU monitor since it was in vertical orientation.
This is also how those old USB DisplayLink adaptors worked.

      >This book was a product of RAND's computing power (and patience). The tables of random numbers in the book have become a standard reference in engineering and econometrics textbooks and have been widely used in gaming and simulations that employ Monte Carlo trials. Still the largest known source of random digits and normal deviates, the work is routinely used by statisticians, physicists, polltakers, market analysts, lottery administrators, and quality control engineers.

You can still find some, but they're expensive and don't expect higher refresh rates than 75hz

CRT were not superior. They were an evolutionary dead-end in the late 1990s into the early 2000s. 95-98% of their former users do not miss them at all. All of the noise is made from contrarian hipster zoomers who were born after CRT production had ceased.
