    Dear Mr. Stallman,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits. I am writing to address a subject that appears to be frequently misunderstood by many who engage with computing devices: the distinction between what is commonly known as Linux and what should rightly be referred to as GNU/Linux.

Permit me to interject for a moment. What is often labeled as "Linux" is, in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I have recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux, in itself, does not constitute an entire operating system but is rather a free component of a fully functional GNU system. This system is rendered effective by the GNU core libraries, shell utilities, and vital system components, which together form a complete operating system as defined by POSIX standards.

Linux is the kernel: the program within the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that one runs. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but it is ineffectual on its own; it can only function within the context of a complete operating system. Linux is customarily employed in conjunction with the GNU operating system: the entire system is fundamentally GNU with Linux appended, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are, in reality, distributions of GNU/Linux.

The principal error lies in the fact that Linux is not, strictly speaking, a part of the GNU system—whose kernel is known as GNU Hurd. The version with Linux is referred to as “GNU/Linux.” It is acceptable to call it “GNU” when brevity is required, but it is more appropriate to refer to it as “GNU/Linux” to duly recognize IQfy’ contributions.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I sincerely appreciate your dedication to the GNU Project and your efforts in educating the public about the importance of free software.

    Yours faithfully,

    Anon.
