I doubt anyone would say that about someone who gave his life to free slaves. And if they do, they should refer to Frederick Douglass who said "His zeal in the cause of freedom was infinitely superior to mine."

Except he didn't, all the boys in blue who died at Antietam or Manassas or whatever did, JB died for the voices in his head

It absolutely does. You just choose to believe some voices in heads are superior to others.

A martyr is somebody who dies unjustly for a cause, not somebody who does what the inner voices tell them to. Nobody would say a school shooter is a martyr because they're schizophrenic.

Martyr (noun): a person who is killed because of their religious or other beliefs.

            >According to his first biographer James Redpath, "for thirty years, he secretly cherished the idea of being the leader of a servile insurrection: the American Moses, predestined by Omnipotence to lead the servile nations in our Southern States to freedom."[122] An acquaintance said: "As Moses was raised up and chosen of God to deliver the Children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage, ...he was...fully convinced in his own mind that he was to be the instrument in the hands of God to effect the emancipation of the slaves."[123]

    Probably both; but more this:
    > a product of his times, the one who did what someone was eventually bound to do.

The slavery issue had been brewing for 40 years. There had been various outbreaks of violence over slavery before Brown.

Was there ever any strong indication that he actually had some kind of mental affliction? His actions were absolutely extreme but I was never given any reason to believe he was really unsound.

In his own day, he was widely described a monomaniac. Which was one of the categories of insanity as it was known back then characterized by being otherwise intelligent, reasonable and rational except on a particular object of obsession. So these were not people disconnected from reality or "hearing voices." They were functioning people who cared WAY too much, for most people's taste, about a particular thing. At a particular time. Soon enough, singing up to go and fight, kill and die alongside free Black folks to cleanse the nation of the sin of slavery would come to be a SENSIBLE, ENCOURAGED and GOVERNMENT PAID thing to do.

Frankly. Brown had the faculty to explain in compelling detail and prose why he was so up in arms when he was well ahead of the curve. He might have been more reasonable, in his own way, than those who later singed up just cuz it seemed to be the Thing To Do, but couldn't enunciate or hold forth on the cause half as well as Brown -- and then died even uglier deaths

why are /misc/tards so historically illiterate? I learned this when I was 14.

Yes the missouri compromise was violated by the north when they claimed the entirety of california because it had gold, this was probably the main reason for the civil war

California became a free state as a consequence of the South pushing for popular soveignty to decide if a new state was free or slave, because they were unhappy with the Missouri compromise.

california became a state before popular sovereignty was a thing (illegally), popular sovereignty was actually a southern capitulation to the north to let them have california as long as they still got to build their railroad, but the north turned around and spat in their faces after they got california

I misremembered this, but you're still moronic:

            >The Compromise of 1850 had several parts. They included California being admitted as a free state and the borders of Texas being settled, with areas ceded by Texas becoming the recognized territories of New Mexico and Utah.
            https://www.britannica.com/event/Compromise-of-1850

This was a deal the South agreed to. It's not my fault that the South are bad at making deals.

            >no, also, we're increasing your taxes
