18.9 is the sweet spot if you're running it on shitty hardware, especially shitty Android boxes. The migration to Python 3 left a lot of hardware behind.

        next kodi requires Android 7.0

        Anonymous

is that so? because my biggest complaint was that this shit constantly crashes and some formats like 10-bit videos were stuttering on it. while vlc just worked. can 18.9 version fix it?

          Anonymous

You can try but if things like 10 bit videos don't work on a current version it's probably going to be worse on an older one. It could possibly be more stable though.

      Home theater PC

I use Kodi on my TVs and control it with conventional remotes. Even my wife's parents who are not the least bit computer literate are able to navigate it and watch live TV channels. I manage the playlists which include complicated shit like widevine licenses and it's frictionless for them. They just select the channel they want, press ok, and it opens.

What do you use for live tv, some provider of IPTV?

          Anonymous

Some of it is from official sources. Others are from an IPTV server at my work that I manage. Some channels come from a HDMI encoder others directly from DVB streams on satellite.

More convenient for home theater use

Plex isnt in the same category. This is like comparing MariaDB to SQLite

People often don't seem to really understand the difference between home theater stuff and media servers. I don't think IQfy people really look into this stuff, unfortunately

      Sorry I've downloaded Jellyfin instead

You can use both as a media player but they're pretty different. I think I get best of both worlds from using Jellyfin for server stuff and as a backend for Kodi

instead? they aren't mutually exclusive, i use kodi to access jellyfin

On my android TV, it's the only one that play all my media correctly. I tried jellyfin app with both media player and using MPV at external.

Have you ever used a TV remote? That's what you use to control Kodi. No other player supports this, to my knowledge.

Your point? I can also sync MariaDB with SQLite if I want. With some hacking I would probably even be able to have SQLite as a DB with MariaDB as DBMS.

I think they just meant one is a media player and one is a media server. Both have some overlap but they're different sort of products

I don't like apps that use the Plex system of having to run 2 apps to play videos.

What do you mean, does it launch some other player if you're using the app or what? Been a while since I tried it out

My wife and her mother are watching live TV in both rooms right now (using Kodi of course) so I'll update later. I am sure the TV in the living room will need to wait for the update because it's using Kodi from the play store. On the box in my bedroom I use the Kodi Android updater addon.

There's a Jellyfin addon for Kodi as well.

      Anonymous

Yeah it's great. While Plex addon for Kodi is just an addon, you use it to access Plex, the Jellyfin addon makes it basically your media backend and it integrates seamlessly into Kodi.

        Anonymous

there's two plugins for jellyfin, one of them you use by going into the addon and browsing the server separate from your kodi media, and the other integrates and syncs the jellyfin media and kodi media
i use the latter as my primary use of kodi is to access my media from jellyfin

Same. First one is called JellyCon iirc, with the latter one being just Jellyfin

Some like it because it's pretty simple and has tons of apps. I personally prefer Jellyfin, has enough support and I want my server to feel like my own, not like I was borrowing it from Plex

Yeah, and it works well until you have several systems where you watch movies - and the kodi fricking front-end never fricking updates until you exit and re-enter kodi - and with kodi requiring a minute just to fricking launch and resync it becomes a fricking hassle.

Keeping the kodi watch-status synced between my livingroom and bedroom tv's become too much a fricking hassle to the point where I just installed the jellyfin app (which also sucks and has playback issues such as choppy playback) instead.

          Anonymous

I've only had the issue about not syncing when I've restarted Jellyfin. Then it has had troubles automatically syncing new stuff into the library. Workaround is restarting Kodi after restarting Jellyfin. But I think in the bugtracker they said this should be solved.
          >kodi requiring a minute to fricking launch a resync
I have an old system running it but it's really quick, takes a few seconds to launch and less than 10 to do a sync.
          >Keeping the kodi watch-status synced between my livingroom and bedroom tv's become too much a fricking hassle to the point where I just installed the jellyfin app (which also sucks and has playback issues such as choppy playback) instead.
That sucks. For me the whole reason to switch to Jellyfin (for Kodi backend) was to sync the watch states better and works really well for me. I used to do the shared MariaDB thing with just Kodi but that was some insane janky ass shit lol. Yeah, Jellyfin player alone can be pretty shit. There's some better MPV based alternatives for PC and I think Findroid is pretty good on Android.

it uses more ram than before, but the rest i haven't had an issue with, it's performance is still quite good
if you're having non-instant starts and laggy input, you have a problem, the slowest i've ever seen kodi was using it on an rpi1b, and that thing had a slow as shit cpu, slower than the original xbox i'm sure (i used to use xbmc on the xbox up until the rpi, actually), even on the rpi it wasn't as bad as you described
