Reffering to the data collection and behavior studies ran by certain apps (or for data collection, a lot of them)? I don't disagree with you, but as long as you're aware of the practices I don't see the issue. You might have more of a point if you're talking about someone who lacks self control and doom scrolls or whatever term you want to use.

I'm not talking about data collection I'm talking about how these fricking phones have ruined society. Everybody lives their entire goddamned lives online now, people have their fricking necks craned staring at their phones sitting around in public. You talk to someone and they just tune out and look at their phone mid conversation. Frick everyone at apple and google who invented these fricking devices are ruined civilization. Even if they didn't collect data they would have ruined everything

it's the perfect dopamine machine, engineered specifically for the human brain. decades of marketing psychology, big data research, and behavioral psych ML have given us the keys to the brain, and we've used them to absolutely ruthlessly and mercilessly train people to look at rectangle and click on ad.

            it's beautiful, innit?

yeah, and they were raising valid concerns, it's just that the trendy tech of the time was ill-equipped to these into actual threats. advertisers in the magazine and TV eras still weaponized cognitive psychology to try and manipulate the masses into patterns of behavior. the difference is now that this manipulation is 1000% more efficient and personalizable

but you're 16, so you still think the coolest answer is not caring and accusing others of being "unoriginal" to bolster your fragile ego

What kind of network are these phones on? I've wanted to get something like this but I'm worried they're on 3g or some shit and will be bricked in a couple years

The older and better models are 3G at best. There are some new dumb phone models with 4G though.

The one in the OP is pretty old so probably no 4G.
The second one is actually just rebranded chinkshit, should have LTE.

Did KaiOS ever turn out decent? What's even the best phone that runs it these days?

      Anonymous

KaiOS is in a pretty sad state atm, the browser app gets ssl errors because the certificates have expired and since it's just a modified version of Android, it gets shit battery life of about 3-4 days on my 2720 Flip.
You can jailbreak the OS but the only thing of interest is a Gameboy emulator and a terminal emulator.

NO. it fricking sucks, I use it daily, and it's clear these developers don't even close to care. the UX is actually puzzlingly horrendous sometimes. looking at making my own texting machine to be done with this shit for good

Well, that sucks to hear. I'm seriously considering getting a dumb phone with just some basic texting features, maybe some basic web browsing, but if there's nothing, frick it

it's sad man. T9 doesn't even work right, and the "learning" it does is fricked up and opaque. Basically, the experience of typing actually slowly becomes more and more convoluted with workarounds and extra keystrokes that you're better off wiping the phone every few months. Plus, the UI lags hard and desyncs from the underlying logic sometimes. I've called one contact, seen the contact name on the screen, and then been connected to some other contact below them in the history. Happened with texts a few times too. That, plus the constant irksome UX problems makings using this piece of flaming shit like death by a thousand cuts. I'm honestly so bitter about it I'm starting to think the whole project is a bought-and-sold strawman for Google/Samsung, it really is like the phone is actively working against your attempts to use it
