Never heard of him. Quick look on Wikipedia makes he seem like a massive cuck.
    >the boom reflects Loewens belief that history should not be taught as straightforward facts but rather as analysis of the context and root causes of events.
Cause ignore facts always ends really well, especially for kids. Seems to be just setting up kids to be manipulated by controlling the framing and context of history rather than just giving them facts.

      >history should not be taught as straightforward facts
Can't have students coming to their own problematic conclusions. Schools need to teach them "media literacy", even if we need to omit parts of the truth.

he means decontextualized facts, memorizing dates and such. A garbage pedagogy that died out before (you) were born.
Even the title is obsolete at this point, he was writing in the 1990s and it shows.

How is analyzing the root causes and contex bad? It’s a deeper understanding of history rather than going this thing happened and then this thing happened

Because if you are missing critical facts then all your analysis is worthless, it’s like building a house on sand. You need a solid foundation of knowledge *before* you can start thinking critically. The way history is taught now has deemphasized “memorizing names and dates” to such an extent that people even taking history degrees in university will be completely fricking ignorant about events of enormous importance. For example, it’s fine to teach people about transAtlantic slavery, but it’s almost never taught that slavery is a cultural universal, and that the Europeans found highly developed slave trading networks waiting for them in Africa. These are the kind of facts that allow you to make a holistic assessment about slavery, rather than a slanted version where the conclusion comes before the proposition: white people are evil. beware the history teacher who is telling you what an event means but doesn’t go into the details of the event; they have an agenda.

I didn’t say that and you can’t link to a post where I did say that.
        I critiqued
        >that history should not be taught as straightforward facts BUT RATHER….
you can and should have context and look at possible causes, but not at the expense of straightforward facts.

      >moving away from black crime to form your own towns is...LE BAD even though you're otherwise more or less leaving the blacks to form Wakanda in the cities and not remaining to perpetuate le white supremacy
I genuinely don't even get this leftie argument.
Also the history taught in school nowadays is basically just Howard Zinn (except in really chuddy states where kids learn the same shit from Tiktok anyway) so the "lies your teacher told you" aren't what this guy thinks.

they were called "sundown towns" and not "whites only towns" because they were full of black people as hired laborers, they just didn't let them stay

I've taught US history for 10 years in the deep south and we cover just about everything he mentions in this book, we just have a limited time and have to condense history for students to understand. Nobody is lying to anybody, the average American 16 year old is so completely apathetic that getting up on a soapbox ranting about the evils of Christopher Columbus will put them to sleep.
Every student in the country is told about the trail of tears and how bad it was and that the civil war was about slavery. They're tested on that. What more does he fricking want?

He's making them for those apathetic 16 year olds 20 years later. It's like the 1619 Project teaching people 70s style historiography like Roots wasn't that in TV form. It's not there because they meaningfully engage with a field that's already moved past it; it's there so they can grift and tell people their agenda.
