Schools are ditching windows en masse because of expensive licensing costs. The average 2010 and onward child has never used windows in any real capacity.

To me the ultimate school lab PXE boots Linux over the network into different environments depending on what the students / teachers / staff are doing. You could add any old computer to the network easily, only real admin is keeping the server going and enrolling a new computer every once in a while, which is very easy for PXE booting.

All the coursework and testing is online these days anyway. Computer could boot straight to a browser for testing and coursework, kids in programming could get a shell prompt and Python too, etc.

Basically every college already does this with Windows. If you’re in some graphic design shit, you’ll have Adobe suite. Engineering, you’ll have matlab and what ever. etc, etc

And everywhere (business, not education) I’ve seen that did thin clients with virtual workstations used windows as the workstation and Linux as the thin client.

Although I think virtual desktops would be cool for uni because students could just use their personal computers to use the virtual desktop, even when they’re not on campus. Idk what kind of resources that would require though. Maybe have to restrict it to students who need more powerful machines.

PXE only works over ethernet, and this would completely cripple the network. Imagine 20 classes x 30 kids logging in at once.

          >All the coursework and testing is online these days anyway
this is the kind of mentality that gets us Chromebooks and kids who don't know how to do any real world shit

Microsoft is one of those things that are important only because they are already important. They suck at everything, they're all fricking moronic, but yet they will keep their undeserved PC monopoly forever. I wish so much Wine at last was good enough to do without Windows.

Microsoft makes more from Android than Google does because Google has to license a bunch of patents from Microsoft since they had a mobile OS long before Google did. No idea how much Apple has to pay Microsoft but the margin on iphones are larger than Android, especially since Apple is always the hardware provider so Apple surely makes more from iphones than Microsoft does.

Microsoft and Apple both have a cross-licensing agreement from back in the late 90s.
That's why only Surfaces are the only laptops/tablets with a magnetic charger that's not from Apple.
That's why Office always gets the best versions first on Mac
The whole PC vs Mac thing was a marketing scam funded by both of them to make it seem like Windows and Mac are the only options.
Same shit with Samsung and Apple in the smartphone space, they seem like rivals but they're the bestest of business partners.
