It's not exactly a secret that Apple Silicon is severely underwhelming in terms of raw processor performance. The chips are decent enough for laptops though.

M3 single core performance is on par with high end desktop x86 chips

on par? m3 is the fastest single processor you can buy. for almost all regular workloads the m3 is going to crush literally anything else you can use right now. it fails for gaming and server workloads. it's actually ridiculous how good it is. embarrassing for everyone else. and I hate apple I mean it's actually just that good.

If that's true then it's a testament to the portfolio of IP and design elements that ARM licenses to Apple. You might as well call it an ARMbook at this point.

Apple has the advantage of vertical integration though so they can offload everything to hyper efficient specialized silicon, as they see fit. Whether or not they're fully taking advantage of this, who can say? It is a huge advantage though, and generic manufacturers cannot compete due to countless hardware variations and software variations and shitty third party drivers and so on.

Its just an option; its not that significant nor is it important.

I want to replace my 10yo MBP that I use for browsing internet, office work, playing old gakes and emulators and light photo edition (like making a meme or translating a manga page). Which nu-macbook should I get? I live in a hot place so the fanless MBA may not be the best option.

my m2 mbp is comfy. old games might not be great though, since lots of software doesn't run on arm yet, especially niche or homebrew type stuff you might want for retro gaming

I was considering buying a laptop with an M2 or M2 Pro as it doesn't seem to have too many differences from the M3 (except that the M3 has ray tracing, but against that it has less cores and lower bandwidth than the M2).
As of today the only problems I have with my current MBP (a second hand 2014 13 inch model with 8GB/128GB) are a worn out battery that lasts 3-4 hours, the fact that I no longer receive OS updates (maybe in the future when it is no longer my main computer I will install Linux) and that the SSD is 10 years old.
I care about specs not because I do a lot of intensive tasks, but because I want to have some guarantee that the laptop will be able to perform without issue the same tasks for years to come despite constant increases in the specifications required by the software.

unless you're doing heavy video editing or RAW photoshop stuff the air will suit you fine, im sure you can find cheap used m2 airs on ebay now since everyone needs the newest shit all the time
i'd heavily recommend you get the 512gb (the 256 and 1tb only use 1 nand chip so its slower) and 16ram, 8ram is not enough for these machines and will hit swap just firing up a web browser. ive got the 24gb model and i usually hover around 12-16gb of usage just shitting around online

if you can only upgrade 1 then id get the bigger ram and just use a external drive
        t. spec'd out m2 air owner

How does the MBA perform in hot climates? One of the reasons I am considering buying another MBP is because I live in a hot area and I don't think the passive cooling of the MBA is sufficient to prevent the OS from throttling the CPU to prevent it from overheating.

Well, I guess it’s possible because the last time I used it I was backing up a shitload of photos. Pretty sure it’s happened before it has a chance to heat up though.
Also a lot of my programs like steam, a torrent client, youtube downloader, vlc start up automatically. I wonder if it’s tanking my ram with background stuff
