I found the drive free from scrap heap, it was securely erased so there was no data innit

well its not MY data that was securely erased but someone elses

I guess I can dig it up somehow

Anon, this is Agent Threeletter. We found some...interesting...things on your hard drive that you tried to erase.

You don't need an SSD on Linux anyhow, that's only necessary on lower OS's.

Notebook spinners are universally horrible but extreme poors gonna pretend differently. I smash them for the delicious magnets since if SSD got any cheaper they'd be handed out by force for free.

        >write to drive many times
        >perfect for expendable drives like magnets

not really. it's more down to how much memory and how moronicly huge the textures are most the time.
with enough memory, winshit and loonix will load faster than any SSD from memory.

          yeah your logic is backwards.
you want to speed up the OS and games by using an SSD, while for other files you can either use an SSD or HDD, although HDDs are cheaper so that may be preferable if youre a data hoarder.
you dont have to be concerned about data loss anyway, because surely you have a backup strategy, right?

i too love waiting 5 minutes for my computer to boot up or restart

It's fine, Linux is pretty usable even off a HDD. The boot times are longer of course but it won't rape the disk with constant activity like Windows does so once it's booted up it's not too much slower to actually use.

The computer I use for Linux is very low-end and kind of old, I did try an SSD and the speed difference was negligible, so I installed the HDD back and saved the SSD for a rainy day.

With Linux I don't think it will matter much.
Speaking of, anyone else noticed that small SSDs are moronic cheap all of a sudden? Maybe I haven't checked in a while but 120GB SSDs are fricking 13€ now, and it's not shit brands either.

They are unable to sell them at this point and try to get whatever price

Probably true, well I'm gonna take advantage and switch out the boot drive for my servers and maybe get one or two extra to run VM's boot drives off

does Linux even have defragment tools? (honestly asking)

      Anonymous

      >does Linux even have defragment tools?
      no
Linux file sytems do not need ones
they do not fragment by design
literally 0.5%-1.0% files fragmented after years of use
can only become more fragmented if you use up 95%+ of free space and then add more big files
