I wiped my VPS the other day to go from Ubuntu to Debian and ended up going back due to having to track down dependencies and adding repos to apt constantly. Absolute ballache.

      Don'tBreakDebian, moron.

Why do fosstrannies insist on making inherently graphical tools like video players, video converters and image editors fricking CLI?

So you can use them remotely over SSH and script them etc...

it's more about building a base for you to use and expand on.

I couldn't even break it to begin with, you fricking idiot.

If your adding repos you're doing it wrong dumbass.

So we're back to square one wasting even more time. Fantastic.

You shouldn't use it if its not in the repos dumbass. That's the whole point. If it's not in the repos, find a different distro.

Then it's a useless fricking distro.

It's useless to you. The point is that the software that is in there is stable and secure. If the software isn't in the repos, sometimes there is a good reason to not use it, often the developers will be hostile to Debian because they hate freedom.

You can see how Debian started to go off the rails if you look at its history.

            403 Buzz 1996-06
            534 (+131 packages) Rex 1996-12 (+6 months)
            887 (+353) Bo 1997-06 (+6)
            1,330 (+443) Hamm 1998-07 (+12)
            1,843 (+513) Slink 1999-03 (+9)
            2,976 (+1,133) Potato 2000-08 (+17)
            8,274 (+5,298) Woody 2002-07 (+23)

Things started getting wobbly when it exceeded 1,000 packages with Hamm, and then release frequency dropped off massively as it approached 3,000 packages with Potato.

Debian started with good intentions, but then bit off way more than it could chew. Trying to bundle non-core apps with your OS is simply a bad idea. But it is a lesson that Debian refuses to learn.

To conserve the 15MB of RAM vs using a GUI so it so they actually view a jpg on their T61.

        speaks for itself

But the real reason is that FOSS gui work is always shit, from x11 and gayland to gtk and tcl, through the desktop environments and desktop tools, up to the crowning shits of GIMP and Audacity, it’s always a pile of shit. But on the command line I can at least code and decode mp3, which is nice

This is why I moved to arch. AUR has more shit in it, and rolling release is just better (until you break your system again and contemplate moving to NixOS)

I love Debian but I'm trying out TuxedoOS due to this problem.
