Memes aside, can't I just use the latest most updated version of Windows 7, setup a firewall and be comfy with regular desktop usage?

Memes aside, can't I just use the latest most updated version of Windows 7, setup a firewall and be comfy with regular desktop usage? I don't need specialized software that only works on later versions to be functional.

I just need to do web browsing, word/excel and a pdf viewer and editor. The few games that I play are also old, so that wouldn't be a problem.

Surely there must be an up to date browser with legacy computers in mind?

Pale Moon. Firefox 115 ESR will last until late 2024.

OS security updates on ESU will last for a few more years.

Yup, or Manjaro with LXQT and use Wine+DXVK+VKD3D.

You'll easily run anything you want and have a way better time on the OS itself.

You probably could make do, yes. Windows 7 support only ended in 2020. You'll start having problems when your certs stop being updated and you have to use obscure noname browsers just to go on youtube.
My recommendation is to just bite the bullet and switch to Mint

        huh?

Baby Duck Syndrome describes how users often stick to the first version of Windows they learned, just like a duckling prefers the closeness to her mother duck. This preference stems from the comfort and familiarity of the initial version, making them resistant to newer versions, even if those versions have better features. Additionally, if they've had good experiences with an older version, they tend to develop a nostalgic attachment, preferring to stay with what they know and trust.

fricking XP is still a better home OS than even the best linux distro even today, I use linux, but it's still shit. Maybe in 60 years it'll be almost as good as Vista or something.

Sure. You only need "security" if your machine is used for online shopping, banking etc which you can do via your phone instead or with a spare Linux machine or live booting a distro while leaving W7 for toy use.

Nothing you see or do matters. Like me you're background noise and unlike the paranoid spergtards I have zero delusions of personal importance. The NSA are welcome to send me a minder if he pays rent. Most things kids care about don't matter IRL but being young, hormonal and autspergschiztarded cause passionate stupidity. Ignore them.
