Micro$hit slowly eroding our ability to own games

The "You will own nothing and be happy" phrase seemed like a meme for the paranoid and delusional hoarders. But im starting to believe they really are onto something...

What type of seething is this?

Classic retro games are getting expensive not only because of hoarders and resellers. They're expensive because zoomers are hyper into old games because there's no microtransaction cancer. I went into a retro vidya used game store, a fairly big one, and 90% of the people in there were probably under 25. There were also some girls buying some Harvest Moon game.

I've kicked around selling my collection a few times now. Could easily get a few grand for it. I keep thinking I'll never have time to play and enjoy them and I am worried I'll miss their most valuable time or they'll get old and degrade to dust.

Pirating back then was also a means to an end justt to get content, hardly anyone I ever knew made it a routine to actually keep shit saved. Only exception was music because it's otherwise piss easy to keep 128k mp3 to make mix CDs when you wanted to.

At best a torrented movie got burned and I've only ever personally witnessed that once to give the kids something to keep them quiet

This. It was over as soon as console games could be patched. I'm not even sure a physical disk legally has to be a complete functional game that doesn't require access to a web service to update and play.

Over 18 years ago, before you were born, I wanted to play half life 2 as I previously enjoyed hl1. Begging my mom to buy it. But even I had the physical disk, it did not allow me to play it without installing steam and making user account and linking that game's key to that account. That was the end own you ownership of games.

Remember to block all steam ports before W10 dies next year, and install the games you care to play offline.

Someday nobody will be playing garrysmod or counter strike because steam will require a TPM 3.0 module, a bugman ARM CPU, and Windows 14. Microsoft will skip Windows 13 (bad luck) for the same reason they skipped Windows 9 (implied completion.)

win7 works just fine with steam. the 'you have x days before we drop support' was a giant year long psyop. simply dont update. its literally all you have to do.

With regards to Xbox, it's okay, there's a potential jailbreak in the works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BtpucspEKY

Damn, were you that moronic back then to pirate HL2?

Even if you own the game on disc you'll still be forced to updoot before playing, not much difference

This. I kept my PS4 on a lower firmware in preparation for the 11.00 jailbreak and was unable to play my physical games without updating first. Gay.

No they aren't. Zoomers aren't into homosexual shit like bing bing wahoos. You're just being a homosexual who's extrapolating this trend from seeing a few young-looking homosexuals at the homosexual store.

No, they're expensive because millennials, who are nostalgic for old games, finally hit their 30s and 40s and started making actual fricking money.

Zoomers are brokies who can't even afford a midrange gaming PC.

I'm glad it's only contained to console games. I can still find brand new sealed copies of some 90s PC games for like $20 on ebay. Hopefully zoomers will never discover the fact that PC was at the forefront of gaming during that decade and prices will stay reasonable.

        >PC was at the forefront of gaming during that decade and prices will stay reasonable
It definitely was not. Late 90s/early 00s was the PC gaming dark age. Pretty much every pioneering studio went under or got bought out, and PCs routinely lagged behind consoles in terms of 3D hardware. Even good PC games were often janky as shit and required a litany of patches to get working.

You sound like a zoomzoom who got into PC gaming in the 2010s when your favorite surrogate father figure on youtube/twitch sold you on the concept.

Most people throw away their computers after three years. In the future the average user won't be able to install anything older than W11 because Intel/AMD will impose arbitrary access to the newest, most restrictive OS only on behalf of MS. MS will clean house on the newest conputers and block access to cracked games, keygens, and third-party debuggers/cheat tools. They'll have to pay a flipper for a bottom barrel rEtRo GaMiNg RIG.

The main problem is the conservation of games. It is a given that current year consoles won't work out of the box in 2040 since online services will drop compatibility with older machines. On the other hand, there will be remasters and pirates may hold copies of old games forever, until a disaster happens on a worldwide scale.

late stage capitalism can only survive by going into the rent seeking mode. its no longer to even sell products, everything must become a service, you rent everything. it's the same reason a toyota of today doesn't last as long as one built 20 years ago, they figured out that it's actually not profitable to make something that lasts that long. your not buying a new one fast enough, same with games, you own the disc, maybe your content and don't buy another game for a while. so buy the game pass and get to play all the games, but just one little catch, you don't own them and they can be taken out of the catalog or out of your console at any time.
