        no its unironically based
        1. Normies who cant into piracy will get priced out of games, leaving the hobby eventually
        2. Small devs who dont want to get israeliteed by the store will have to set up thier own payment systems (or use some new competitor and replay the whole thing again in 10 years)
        3. Small devs that make unapproved games (no token PoC, e.g.) will have to do 2 but will probably get israeliteed by any new startup too. Might see a resurgance of in-person sales with cash, which is megabased.

Eat shit, if you don't like it you can always sell your game on timmy tencent's store and nobody will ever hear about your game or give a frick. Steam offers features and it's where the users are. Valve is being downright generous by only charging 30% for your ungrateful ass.

            Anonymous

I'm with you until valve being generous. Epics store is shit in regards to features and they have every opportunity to fix that and bring in players. That's the only issue with it. Steam is grandfathered in, and has decent features (after 20 years they ought to). Epic should be catching up faster and they aren't.
Valves cut is too high. Sweeney is right about that but he's not really trying that hard to fix it properly.

            Valves cut isn't even unusual
It's probably to high and they are willing to go down to 20% so that should be the cut in general instead of the sliding cut they do now.

Yeah, 25% at $10 million and 20% at $50 million.
I just question how big of a deal Valve making an extra $13 million for games are when a big publisher probably negotiate for the 20% cut from the get go.
I don't run their finances so maybe it is or isn't but who knows.

            >when a big publisher probably negotiate for the 20% cut from the get go.
A big publisher usually negotiates around 30%. But they also front at least some of the games production, advertising, etc, and potentially ships a physical product.

            >It's where the games are -> Because it's where the users are -> Because it's where the games are -> Because...
The only thing Valve needs to do to remain profitable at this point is just to sit down and enjoy their monopoly. Their features haven't evolved in a long time and when did they they release a game last time? What company can afford to do nothing for years and remain profitable? Monopolies and network effects are a hell of a drug.

Valve have had, and maybe still have, the best product, I don't deny it, but what I'm saying is that their market is so ridiculous that it's now impossible for others to compete, even with an objectively superior product. Read on the network effect.

Nope. You are free to compete. There are a dozen or more competitors on PC. The problem is they are just bad at creating a superior service and don't behave in ways that suggest they care about being serious competitors.

Before the severe corruption any company owning over 50% of a market was considered to have a de jure monopoly and were broken up.

The rules have changed. Go by the old rules, when the US had better economy and living standards, and valve has a de jure monopoly (they have around 70% market share).

But change the rules that gave a better living standard to the common man. Let's see where this ends up (hint: "If you do not change path, you may end up where you're headed")

Double wrong. If it had insignificant competitors it would be a monopoly. Oligopoly would mean a small handful of similarly strong competitors.

Valve have had, and maybe still have, the best product, I don't deny it, but what I'm saying is that their market is so ridiculous that it's now impossible for others to compete, even with an objectively superior product. Read on the network effect.

            >Read on the network effect.
Network effects aren't significant when it comes to buying single player games. The market on steam for each user joining still only grows linearly, whereas network effects give an exponential effect on utility to users.
Even platforms like Facebook fell despite being market leader.

Epic can't count because it's not actually a real store and it wasn't created to ever be a functional store. Epic made their store solely to sue Apple. This was proven in court and recognized by the judge. Tencent Timmy even said that less than 30% wasn't sustainable and the price would have to go up at some point.

Steam is the world's largest pimp. It gets 40% of the money of the global gaming industry. There are over a billion steam users. Each pays 60$ per game of which steam takes at least 25$. There are hundreds of thousands of devs releasing millions of games. Calculate. Assume each dev prostitute sells just 2 games per year: 1B*25*100k*2 = $5.000.000.000.000.000
Yes steam makes $5 QUADRILLION US DOLLARS per year from steam alone.

            1. there's no way the average game price is $60

        Revenue is not profit

        Compare to ATVI morons.
MSFT bought ATVI for $69 billion.
        ATVI's financials: approx $8B revenue, $2B profit.
Given that Valve's revenues are higher than ATVI's from what we know, their total profit is probably higher by around the same amount.
It should probably go for more than ATVI, which means $16B is a serious lowball when the actual valuation is more like $80B.

They already have the golden egg laying goose, they don't need it, and I suspect their categorical imperative is against that. Screen cap this all you want.

It's a shame Microsoft had never really had any other alternative than to buy competition, as they might suspect their own golden highway (of their operating system hegemony) is likely coming to an end in this century, rather sooner than letter.

Valve's investments in WINE for SteamOS are a major contributor in the growing viability of Linux as an alternative desktop platform.
It makes sense that Microsoft would want to shut them down as they announce unpopular changes in their OS that they know will push people further towards Linux.

they made posts insinuating microsoft would feel threatened by valve because of the statistically irrelevant population of gamers switching to linux
microsoft doesn't care. the only reasons it wants valve are

Valve realistically has all the technology MS needs to push Xbox to the next level, all the technical expertise to create a handheld xbox and optimise for it plus the ability to push the xbox brand into VR, a vast store library that outclasses Microsoft's own.

If wine/proton support is enough for some industries to save money on abandoning windows then maybe there's something to the rumor.

MS has pretty much set the standard in every tech sector for the most anti-consumer practices for the past twenty years. Google usually follows shortly behind. MS and Sony are the two singular reasons I pirate all music without exception.

The entire reason Valve went so hard with Linux and Proton is because there was a point where MS was trying to shut down all gaming on Windows that wasn't going through GFWL. They would have went through with it had the reception not been universally horrible. MS ruins everything they touch with their street shitting concept and engineering teams.
