MKV to MP4

Hi I recently torrented a short series but it's in MKV format, I need it in MP4 format for my flashdrive media archive.
What would be the best way of converting it without losing quality?

      just use .webm

      ffmpeg -i IQfy.mkv -c:v libvpx IQfy.webm

    These are just containers, anon
Mux and demux it, and you'll be fine.

    ffmpeg -i /path/to/video.mkv -c:v copy -c:a copy /path/to/save/video.mp4

What it does is basically losslessly formatting your hard drive, cuts off your balls and injects you with HRT.

So I just use that thing on ffmpeg and it'll convert it losslessly

Yes, but you need to download ffmpeg first, brown zoomer

      >ffmpeg -i /path/to/video.mkv -c:v copy -c:a copy /path/to/save/video.mp4
Is a valid ffmpeg command that will not give your PC aids, but

...why do you need it in mp4???
if whatever device you are using doesn't support mkv, chances are it also doesn't support any codec that isn't h264/aac, remuxing is only an option if the mkv contains h264/aac in that case

      is the more pressing issue.
A "video file" is a container file with tracks/streams, usually one video and at least one audio (the webms here on IQfy being a notable exception having only a video track and using the webm container).
Video and audio tracks may have different codecs used, analog to how image files can be JPG or PNG.
It can be simple, it can be complex, just use a GUI wizard thingamahjiggie, OP, unless you want to learn first, because you'll need that to understand what you're doing.

Ok then listen up. Everything, yes everything, video related is best done by ffmpeg. That's probably what your favorite sóyware uses in the background anyway.

I want it in MP4 so I can just plug it in anywhere and watch it and so it matches all the other video files I archived.
Wish things didn't have to be so complicated.

        >I want it in MP4 so I can just plug it in anywhere
...but do you actually have devices that don't support mkv??? that doesn't really answer the question
there's no way to have video you can plug in anywhere... there are plenty of old devices out there that will only play ancient h262/h263 video, and you definitely don't want that.
I bet half of your mp4's are h265 and you just haven't noticed any compatibility issues yet because it's 2024 and shit just works
        >Wish things didn't have to be so complicated
it's really not, you are just moronic and cannot understand the simple concept of codec vs container

I'm not gonna be using ancient stuff smartass or maybe ur just autistic so it's ok, everything takes MP4 and I want it so I can plug my archive in anywhere and it just works idk what h265 is or any other of that shit, it's just MP4.
My laptop CAN run MKV with VLC but I don't want MKV files regardless, I want MP4 files so everything is nice and homogeneous.

            >idk what h265 is or any other of that shit, it's just mp4
once again, you fail to understand the basic concept of "codec" and "container"
            >maybe ur just autistic
and maybe you're just extremely moronic
            >my laptop can run mkv but I want mp4 so everything is nice and homogeneous
first of all, no, it won't be homogeneous because every file is using all kinds of different codecs but you fail to understand what that means
second, you are literally downgrading to a shittier format, and in some cases transcoding with quality/efficiency loss... just so the file extension matches? and I'm the moronic one? lol
why don't you just rename all the mkvs to mp4 then? they'll still play just fine on your vlc, problem solved
            >inb4 that won't make them compatible with every device moron
remuxing to mp4 also won't lol

Listen buddy, I just want it done easy I and don't care about all that shit, I get you're autistic and that's ok because you're obviously pretty smart about this stuff but at the end of the day I want my shit to be MP4

            >wants to lossy re-encode his files just so the file extension matches

            kek
            >at the end of the day I want my shit to be mp4
and I've just fricking told you how to do it
literally just rename the files shithead, in your case it would just work
there's no other option since you aren't willing to learn what a codec is and aren't even willing to attempt a simple remix (which would be functionally the same as renaming in this case)
why am I even spending time typing the same stuff over and over to a moron that won't even fricking read

plenty of people already told you this is not how it works, container has barely any impact on compatibility

I was told ffmpeg was the only good option so it won't ruin the quality of the video.

first of all, handbrake is literally an ffmpeg frontend
second, there's no difference transcoding with ffmpeg or with something else, generation loss doesn't magically go away by using ffmpeg

I'm looking for something a little less complicated, would rather just upload my files and download them
U would think in the year 2024 you wouldn't have to fricking code to just change a file's format
We have people living in space but no way to translate MKV to MP4

        >would rather just upload my files and download them
or you could drag and drop into handbrake or any other ffmpeg gui, and get a way better result in way less time you braindead zoomzoom
        >U would think in the year 2024 you wouldn't have to fricking code to just change a files format
you don't, again, there's software made for morons like you that does this, and it's been already raccomended to you (since typing 3 words into terminal is such a challenge)
you could've just gone ahead and shitted up your files already
