It was removed because it was worse than Manga109 even on live action content. The model is probably too small to learn DIV2K properly.

          Anonymous

dang. artoruiz if you see this please make a better artcnn using the div2k model for live action fellas, or honestly, a shader that's god's blessing on earth that manages to nail both anime and live action content.

for the sake of experiementation, it'd be epic if you tried using https://seungjunnah.github.io/Datasets/reds.html this to train a model, in your last post you said 32gb is too big but sir, please do the needful for the sake of experimentation.

            Anonymous

If I made a model big enough to be able to extract any benefits from training with a dataset this big you wouldn't be able to run it on your computer anymore.

mpv was just wm4's personal pet project because he hated how bloated mplayer2 was. wm4 was altruistic enough to share is his contributions to the public and make them open source because mpv used to MEAN something.

Every little detail you love about mpv is because wm4 LOVED mpv. You just felt the passion he had for project through his contributions to FOSS video player development. And yes, wm4 was a mortal just like you and me. He used mpv the same way that you used mpv.

mpv is averaged over a certain amount of time, file properties are averaged over the entire length, right?

Correct. This is why MPV takes a few seconds to give you a bitrate, which then changes every second, based on the last few seconds.

how about just remove "high-quality" profile? if anything, the hdr settings could be moved to default

        Anonymous

why? the hdr settings are not trivial to compute. personally i think hdr-peak-compute should also be moved to high-quality since some users already expressed that it causes perf drops, but thats neither here or there i guess

          Anonymous

they should remove high-quality and move all that stuff to an "hdr" profile then.

            Anonymous

why? having polar filters on an HDR profile makes no sense

what i am saying is that high-quality should be removed and default should be left as-is besides removing hdr-compute-peak=yes. if anyone wants ewa_lanczossharp, they can set it manually. new hdr profile should be the following:
            [hdr]
            hdr-compute-peak=yes
            hdr-peak-percentile=99.995

can someone explain to me the difference that's happening here
    mpv filename:
    >nvidia-smi says mpv process type = compute
    >nvtop shows low dgpu %
    >mpv shows HW: nvdec-copy
    prime-run mpv filename
    >nvidia-smi says mpv-filename process type compute + graphics
    >nvtop shows higher dgpu %
    >mpv shows HW: nvdec

without prime-run it's just doing decoding and with prime-run it's doing decoding + rendering? what's the difference

      Anonymous

decoding is reading the audio/video frames from the file. rendering is drawing them on the screen.

        Anonymous

so lets say my file has a frame that contains the color red. my decoder decodes it, and then mpv paints it on my screen as orange. why?

post comparisons. if i can't see a difference 1 foot away from my monitor then i'm not keeping it. after diving deep into the config rabbit hole, at this point i'm all about optimizing performance if it means retaining 99% of visible quality.

nevermind actually. I binded sigmoid-upscaling to a key and i see no difference toggling back and forth. not gonna worry about it.

Those are people who pay $40k for projector, $15k for Envy and similar money for other home theater equipment. Easily few hundred thousand sink into this. Of course they want to pay more.

        Anonymous

I completely don't understand madVR Envy product segment, why they need video procesor, which is essentially fancy scaler for $15k? DTM is a "big" thing, but it strips DV and HDR10+, which makes comparisons completely invalid. Is this the video equivalent of audiophiles snake oil product? How is madVR Envy winning "innovation" awards, for the code that literally is 5 years old at least. How do they market this? Any anon have Envy? Can you tell from your pov why this product is existing?

          Anonymous

Using something like mpv means local files only. You cant playback streaming sites or blurays through mpv without DRM being defeated. MadVR Envy just takes an HDMI signal and processes it, so the only potential concern is HDCP. moronic boomers pay for streaming sites and blurays, they do not want to rip their blurays to files either. This is why the envy or similar products are sought after in these circles.

            Anonymous

I want to note that there ARE fully free and opensource solutions that achieve what envy and the like do, but the catch is that envy has a legitimate HDCP license so theres no hassle of trying to strip it. I am not sure if the strongest HDCP DRM can even be stripped at all atm.

            Anonymous

            >If youre a consoomer: envy is the only option
Why? Just use DV or HDR10+ metadata and let you projector do the tone mapping. I know the tone mapping, might be little bit different, but does the difference really justify $15k video processor?

I'm not talking about blu-ray DRM, I am talking about HDCP, they are different. Blu-ray DRM is easily defeated but as I said these people don't want to rip them, they want the "experience" of playing the physical disc.

            >What does envy do besides piss filtering?

Also, a lot of the time most traditional scalers look pretty bad for video games. You should only integer scale or unironically use bilinear. Bilinear looks the least ass for low resolution vidya

            Anonymous

Unironically scale pixelized content with nearest.

            Anonymous

Nah this is a bad idea most of the time unless you can guarantee an integer scale, which isn't possible most of the time because modern monitor resolutions aren't always evenly divisible by 1:1 PAR resolutions for a lot of the more esoteric console outputs (this is ignoring the fact that sometimes the true aspect ratio of a system doesn't even guarantee 1:1 PAR, like with the NES, SNES, Genesis, PC Engine etc.) The main problem with nearest is that pixels=/=squares, pixels == points. So obviously, unless you can guarantee that you're going to get even squares all of the time (integer scaling), you'll get uneven squares which will result in shimmering artifacts on modern displays.

            See: https://github.com/rsn8887/Sharp-Bilinear-Shaders/blob/master/README.md

Yeah i noticed that, i tried testing them with anime cutscenes to see if it was any different but it's still dogshit

There's basically 2 problems here, which is

            1. There just isn't enough visual information in low-res FMVs to make good upscales that don't look like absolute ringy dogshit.
            2. The Saturn and PS1 FMVs were encoded with some of the earliest encoders of all time (there wasn't really much of a choice) so they're full of compression artifacts and chroma blocking. If you upscale these with something sharp like lanczos, you will just sharpen the artifacts.

So basically you need something that is soft, but not too soft like B-spline (B=1,C=0) for upscaling old vidya. So realistically your only nonshit choice is bilinear or integer scaling for sharp pixels.

            Anonymous

i'm upscaling DOS games with OBS. The pipeline is basically:
            >320x200 -> 1920x1200 using nearest (upscale 16:10 window)
            >1920x1200 -> 1600x1200 using bilinear (scale to 4:3 as that is the intended dar)
            it just werks

Only problem with integer scaling is the black bars in systems with weird aspect ratios like the PSP

what? they couldn't have shaved off 2 pixels to make it 480x270 and follow an industry standard?

You can integer scale on the PSP and still fill the screen, it just requires you to crop the top and bottom 1px lines.

Either way, this isn't as big of an issue with linear screen scaling if you don't want to crop. It will lead to slight blurring but it's mostly inconsequential especially since a good chunk of PSP games are 3D games which can have their internal output upscaled directly . This is more of a discussion for 2D games.

I'm trying to play a big file ~10 GB, from a torrent using mpv webtorrent hook.
Issue is the playback crash at some point.
I thought it was because the file size is too big for my cache, but even after increasing it.
Even in terminal I'm not getting any errors.
Anyone got any ideas how to improve webtorrent playback? maybe I should use cache file instead?

I have my client set to blocklist webtorrent user agents, and even have some heuristics set to detect webtorrent peers.

And you can't even change scaler in the phone version of VLC so the normal folks will never even know that scale autism is a thing

Phone GPUs have very good scalers builtin. They may not come close to madVR autism, but they're better than any user actually needs.

            what

even modern dedicated GPUs still use very basic builtin scaling kernels

            Anonymous

No, they also have video scaling capabilities, but nobody uses them on desktop. Or at least mpv can't make use of them, vlc presumably doesn't either.
