fwiw last I know of youtube-dl still works albeit they don't bother making releases anymore and have odd priorities (e.g. supporting python-2.6 and python 3.2)

The tldr on this is that we ultimately don't know what kind of model would work the best and how much better it would be when compared to classic solutions. It's extremely unlikely that said model would come up worse than what's currently available though, but nobody seems to care.

chud here, I have an idea of what the programs in OP do but never used them. I've only used vlc or cheap online websites to view or convert media.
why should I use any of the recommend ones instead of staying with my tried and tested methods?

mpv allows for advanced video autism, and has some nice plugins. if you dont need either of those vlc is fine (dont mind what other people say)
you do use ffmpeg, almost every open source multimedia player uses it one way or another (including vlc)
yt-dlp allows one to download videos and to watch online videos with mpv

      hope that helps

        Anonymous

        thanks
so basically I'm fine with vlc since I don't really need advanced stuff
        I'll get ffmpeg and I'll consider yt-dlp, I probably don't need it

            Anonymous

well not really mr chudster. as

mpv allows you to do some very advanced stuff
for instance, play around with state of the art upscalers, which is a major benefit if you have a 1440p/4k monitor
another good example, if you have a 2.1 pc speaker system, you can use a custom audio filter that will preserve the bass in high quality audio sources (normally a 2.1 system is detected as stereo and the bass is cut)
yet another example, mpv will allow you to playback dolby video files. not many players can do that

yt-dlp allows you to download or stream videos from a shitton of websites (including youtube, obv). aside from allowing you to archive videos, the main benefit is that you can then playback all this content in mpv, benefiting from its awesome capabilities.

ffmpeg you don't have to worry about, unless you're into (re)encoding videos and applying custom filters and whatnot. its there, underneath, being used all the time, but you probably won't interact with it directly.

so kindly stated, mpv has upscaling, which would be handy for my 4k™ monitor

all of this could've been avoided if there was a normal general OP...

            Anonymous

he's a moron, you DON'T want to go in to the rabbithole of playing with scalers. VLC has prefectly fine scaling by default. you're obviously gullible and stupid

yt-dlp can extract DASH manifest if using above option. But then it starts from the live beginning. Is there a way to skip/fastforward anyway? mpv/ffmpeg can demux DASH, but how to seek it?

I was always interested in using youtube-dl and was curious that it could stream on mpv. But I was filtered since the official guide said it required tools that I don’t want to start using (namely git and python). A few years later I learn that yt-dlp is the main fork and this time with a release file for mac (prebuilt executable). Problem is, I was clueless about using it. To make matters worse reddit was the main recourse for “quick” learning. I never had a reddit account and I don’t fancy getting one now. So with my limited programming knowledge I managed to get it all to work on my mac intel and windows 32bit. So now I will give a guide on how to do it for both.

    Mac (non-silicon)
I run Ventura. Download the prebuilt executable for yt-dlp. Put the file in /usr/local/bin/ . I found a post with instructions on how to get the prebuilt file to be executable here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/is-have-we.2355444/page-2 . Open terminal (found in applications>utilities folder) Paste this and press enter
    sudo curl -L https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases/latest/download/yt-dlp -o /usr/local/bin/yt-dlp
then paste this and press enter
    sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/yt-dlp
That’s it! Close terminal and yt-dlp is ready to use. But ffmpeg must be installed to merge audio and video streams outside of the audio fused video streams which are no higher than 720p. Go to https://evermeet.cx/ffmpeg/ . Download the ffmpeg 7z you only need one and either the most up to date with the long ass name or the stable release (6.1.1) is fine. Extract the folder to where yt-dlp is and run the file. That’s it! Close terminal and test it. For example
    yt-dlp “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oRRZiRQxTs”

I use the mpv prebuilt by djinn. It will not run as is so you need to create the command yourself by manually creating its PATH. I recommend reading up on PATH for mac, you can start here https://osxdaily.com/2014/08/14/add-new-path-to-path-command-line. You’re also going to have to know what shell you are using for terminal which is named in the terminal window itself right before the resolution label. Ventura runs zsh by default so I had to create a text file called “.zshrc” and assuming mpv is In the application folder, write this in the text document
    export PATH=$PATH:export PATH=$PATH:/Applications/mpv.app/Contents/MacOScode]
finally place the document in your home folder (shortcut is cmd+shift+H). Test it
    mpv “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oRRZiRQxTs”
Tip: In your Home folder (shortcut is cmd+shift+H) you may want to set a config in the hidden .config folder (shortcut to unhide is cmd+shift+.) . Create yt-dlp folder save a text doc called config inside. Write in the config file
    -S "codec:h264"
It forces yt-dlp not to download a video with codec higher than 264 which is helpful because seeking in a video higher than 264 may cause mpv to permanently hang if not fully buffered and disrupt the whole video. 264 and lower does not have this issue.

    Windows (32-bit)
Just to be clear I will not be covering mpv for windows because I haven’t used it yet. So running windows 7, I had to get a windows 32-bit yt-dlp which is not found on the main site but I grabbed it here https://sourceforge.net/projects/yt-dlp.mirror/files/2023.12.30/yt-dlp_x86.exe/download . Place the executable anywhere you want. I recommend getting ffmpeg too which I got here https://github.com/ShareX/FFmpeg/releases but if you use that, you should also get ffprobe which I got here (4.2.1) https://ffbinaries.com/downloads . Open all of the executables you downloaded non of them should do anything yet. Although yt-dlp is technically ready to use you’ll need to keep writing the whole directory in cmd prompt so adding it as a PATH directory will be easier. On the other hand ffmpeg x ffprobe will not work with yt-dlp if they do not have a PARH directory. To do this go to control panel (category view) > System and Security > System > Advance system settings (left panel) > (should be on advanced tab) Environment Variables. From there You should see a system variable called “Path”. Click Edit and add your directories for where all the executables are located, make sure you have semi-colons to separate them. That’s it! You should test it, you may also want to rename yt-dlp_x86 to just yt-dlp (or shorter) test it by opening command prompt. yt-dlp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oRRZiRQxTs

So how exactly does deinterlacing with hwdec work? Is hardware accelerated deinterlacing supposed to be crappier than the software solutions that mpv falls back to? I know that vulkan inserts bwdif but what about the other backends like VAVPP and D3D11VPP?

      Anonymous

So I did a bit of investigating and it seems like AMD is being AMD as usual because deinterlacing only has one mode with d3d11vpp, and nothing else. Even if you cycle between multiple vfs like bob, adaptive etc they all just look blurry and aliased compared to vulkan_bwdif with vulkan video decoding. I thought "bob" was the bwdif equivalent with d3d11vpp but apparently not... Sad that AMD has neglected hardware deinterlacing but I guess a lot of people don't watch japanese tv broadcasts.

        Anonymous

        d cycle-values hwdec d3d11va d3d11va-copy; cycle-values deinterlace yes no

copy-back uses software deinterlacing (bwdif), so this will fix the issue. Have to use cycle-values for deinterlace now instead of cycle because the auto option just got recently added, and you'll just cycle to auto and break deinterlacing by going back to interop hardware decoding.

Well, folks, let me tell you, it's a real shame, okay? mpv used to be tremendous, the absolute best, believe me. I even crafted my own front-end, nobody does it better than me, folks. It was fantastic, superior to anything out there. I still use it, of course, but I'd love to see it stay current. You know, with support for new video formats, HDR, DV, sound formats, and all that. But, unfortunately, every time they update it, it uses more GPU, and causes all kinds of video and audio problems. So slow now! It's a disaster, really, folks.

And not just for any videos, no, we're talking about videos with AC3 TruHD tracks. Confirmed. AC3 THD Atmos 7.1, AC3 THD 5.1, you name it. Sometimes it's all over the place during playback. Adjusting the audio delay, it's like talking to a wall. No effect, none! And get this, same story whether you're bit-streaming or not. Stop and restart the video at the same timecode, and guess what? Different lip-sync! It's completely unusable, folks, a real disaster.

But here's the kicker, okay? Always, and I mean always, works perfectly with a DLL from April 30, 2023. Exact same configuration. These new versions, so lame. But 30.04.2023: That's a winner folks!"

If there's one thing I have to consneed to mpv over quicktime is that mpv is almost perfect at a/v sync with display-resample, while qt is ~50-70ms off

that's weird considering QT should be using a cvdisplaylink for timing in a pull-based model which should make it more accurate than mpv's implementation on osx.

Why does gpu-next use 1.96 as the gamma for bt1886 screenshots though? Weren't some morons arguing last year that 1.96 is what quicktime uses for decoding content tagged as rec709 and is "wrong", the pure gamma value should be closer to 2.2? So by the same metric isn't gpu-next wrong?

I don't understand, if bt1886 screenshot tagged to be decoded using 1.96 looks same as vo=gpu screenshot on srgb, then why does video decoded using quicktime (which decodes assuming 1.96) look different from mpv (which decodes following bt1886?)

      haasn is never wrong

      Anonymous

Because the actual curve is a complicated function and you need to use a simple gamma curve to approximate it. As it turns out once you crunch the maths, a simple curve of 1.961 is approximately identical to spec. haasn and other users have already done comparisons using actual film grades before, the current transfer defaults are correct.

you'd have to test with a viewer that actually obeys color space info

You can just with mpv and put the images side by side. Technically sRGB should look identical to BT.1886 if you have a 1000:1 contrast ratio display.

        Anonymous

        >a simple curve of 1.961 is approximately identical to spec
Then why does quicktime produce different results from mpv?

I just played some anime (tagged 1-1-1) in mpv, vlc, quicktime, and browser (chrome).

Quicktime and browser have the videos lighter (more pastel), so it's clear that they're using 1.96 gamma.

VLC and mpv are darker. Setting icc-enabled-auto makes no difference (it infers contrast of 1000:1).

Apple doesn't follow ITU-R BT.1886 spec perfectly because it handles black points differently than as recommended by the spec. This is fine on apple obviously because apple has its own color management environment and they can nitpick parts of the spec to best fit their desktop/laptop displays. mpv follows BT.1886 spec perfectly and just assumes that your display fits the proper gamma curve.

sure but even with icc profile enabled mpv is still far darker than quicktime. Browser also agrees with quicktime. So one side is clearly wrong, haasn keeps waffling about how slope limiting this and that, but at the end of the day the difference between the two is stark. And I don't care about "film grades" because 99% of content I watch isn't properly mastered by someone sitting in a darkroom on a reference monitor. So given that the browser matches quicktime, I think mpv is just wrong.

if mpv is wrong then the bt.1886 spec is wrong. go complain to the boomers who designed it for filmmaking because they were nostalgic about their RGB reference CRT monitors

            Like this piece
            >and even apple's slope-limited gamma 1.96 more or less approximates the 1886 shape overall as well, so they clearly agree with this.
            >(Although IIRC, a better approximation would be gamma 2.20 and not gamma 1.96, the former being a far more widespread value. 2.2 vs 1.96 most likely has to do with the perceptual contrast drop issue that UliZappe mentioned earlier)
Just wtf is he saying. The difference between 2.2 gamma and 1.96 gamma is night and day and is precisely the crux of the issu, he just waffles on about random shit without addressing the point blank issue that mpv renders videos is far darker than any other os.

if mpv is wrong then the bt.1886 spec is wrong. go complain to the boomers who designed it for filmmaking because they were nostalgic about their RGB reference CRT monitors

What settings do I need to make mpv make my pastel colors actually pastel instead of the darkened crap. How do I tell mpv to not apply its bt1886 stuff and just do whatever browsers, quicktime, and every other video player is doing?

            see https://issues.chromium.org/issues/41450195
Chrome intentionally uses srgb to decode bt709 content. Given that all youtube content is made to be watched in browser, anyone using mpv to watch youtube has colors too dark. Simple as.

yes, this is what the youtube engineers said on that thread
          >However, I have noticed recently that a video with sRGB transfer function uploaded to YouTube will get transcoded to 709 with gamma transformations applied, which means the final color values are smaller. And since Chrome aliases 709 as sRGB on Windows, the end result is darker on PC.

Actually yeah you're righ, apparently for hwdec content on mac they don't do any further conversion so they stick with what the hwdecoder provides which is 1.961 decode. So it's only hwdec on osx that's a special case where thigns get treated at 1.961, in all other cases for all other platforms they decode bt709 as srgb.

But it means that what mpv is doing is simply wrong.

            >Passing BT.709 codepoints through to an sRGB display in expected sRGB ambient illumination conditions results in a system gamma that closely matches the system gamma adjustment implied by the charts produced by the BT.2390 experiments. Applying the BT.1886 EOTF and sRGB iEOTF to the signal produces a system gamma that's too high for the sRGB ambient conditions according to that study.

you do realize this doesn't mean anything right? assuming mpv is correctly meeting your black point assumptions, you shouldnt be able to tell a difference between sRGB and bt.1886. you can even force mpv to target a sRGB trc and confirm this yourself. gimp literally has a metadata viewer which will tell you that it's forcing sRGB and ignoring colortags (which is what most image viewers already do by default)

unironically google chrome on pc. mpv wants you to buy a reference monitor and sit in a dark room because that's what the spec says you have to do. Meanwhile chrome does the sensible thing and decodes bt709 as srgb because 95% of the time people producing content tagged as bt709 just use regular monitors, and the other 5% of the time you're watching a serious(tm) Hollywood film graded on a reference monitor, the 2.4->2.2 gamma drop is actually needed if you're watching in an environment brighter than like 10lx or so.

not him but unless you're doing actual work with colours then it's basically pointless to ask that, since no consumer monitor is properly calibrated anyway
if it doesn't look obviously wrong, then it's probably good enough
png screenshots technically can't be 100% correct anyway, because png only supports the rgb colourspace, while videos are 99.99% yuv colourspace (only in special cases like screen recording may you have a natively-rgb video)

    >The "1.961" value is an approximation of a BT.1886 curve which is the EOTF that mpv defaults to.
No one has yet to answer. If mpv tagging screenshots of bt1886 content with 1.961 gamma is the correct thing to do as prescribed by lord haasn himself, why is quicktime decoding video with 1.961 gamma wrong? You can't have it both ways.

      Anonymous

haasn already answered this like 7 years ago. apple doesn't bother to follow spec because they produce their own displays

        Anonymous

Ok then why does mpv tag screenshots with 1.961. By the same reasoning it should tag bt1886 screenshots with 2.4 gamma.

          Anonymous

          bt.1886 isn't a pure 2.4 gamma curve

            Anonymous

it basically is at infinite contrast ratio. And you keep dodging the main question. haasn bootlicker logic is that mpv using 1.961 gamma for screenshots is perfectly sensible, while quicktime doing the same is because apple is moronic. You can't have it both ways.

            Anonymous

            >while quicktime doing the same is because apple is moronic
isnt your argument that mpv is wrong? so are you saying quicktime is wrong too?

            Anonymous

You're still dodging the question. Quicktime is consistent in using 1.961 everywhere. Mpv is using 1.961 for screenshots, 2.4 decode gamma when trc set by default (badly assuming that most people watch on reference monitors), and ~2.2 if you force a sensible 1k:1 contrast ratio.

You can't have it both ways, haasn bootlicker. If tagging 1.961 in the screenshots is correct then quicktime is doing nothing wrong. If it's wrong, then mpv is incorrect.

            Anonymous

i dont even understand what you're arguing, so mpv and quicktime have the same behavior... whats the point

            Anonymous

no it doesn't, are you actually moronic? mpv aligns with quicktime ONLY for screenshots, not for video playback. In other cases it doesn't. Now obviously the colors when you render a screenshot should match the colors you see when you play a video. Currently it doesn't do that.

            Anonymous

but the screenshots mpv takes are how it looks when rendered, so are quicktime and mpv the same or not? whats your position exactly? i cant tell which side you're shitposting for. are you pro quicktime or anti quicktime?

            Anonymous

            >but the screenshots mpv takes are how it looks when rendered
This just confirms haasn bootlickers have no critical thinking skills. Let me break it down for you so even a vantablack gorilla can understand:

mpv: assuming infinite contrast, decodes bt.1886 video and covers to linear space with 2.4 gamma. When taking screenshot, tags the decoded frame with 1.96 gamma.

image viewer: Looks at screenshot, decodes that frame with 1.96 gamma. This does not match the 2.4 gamma mpv used when decoding.

How hard is it to understand?

            Anonymous

but what ur saying is wrong tho so i dont understand what this esoteric shitpost is for a media player that no one uses. so quicktime and mpv are the same

            Anonymous

you're moronic. Since no one seems to capable of answering the question (and it's in fact the exact same question mighty hunn asked. All the babble in that github issue about eotf and metadata chunks is meanignless), I'll just assume libplacebo is broken. Seems mighty hunn is the one one willing to call out haasn bootlickers for their dynamic waffling and obfuscations.

quicktime is not deprecated, avfoundation runs everything on osx. Your ignorance shows you know nothing. Guess what the netflix app uses under the cover? AVFoundation. It's so tightly integrated that apparently even chrome which uses its own rendering stack but calls out to system framework for hwdec ends up inhering the 1.961 gamma. As a result, everything on macos is consistently color managed. Your image viewer shows the same colors and your browser tab, which is the same color as your video player. Meanwhile mpv is a trainwreck.

All of it is pointless bloat and pointless specs made by timewasting boomers and pearlclutching film directors. No one even follows spec, because d65 bt.1886 looks fricking horrible compared something more perceptually satisfying like a cool white point in gamma 2.2. Crank the saturation up a little and you're good to go for optimal kino viewing.

If I have a 60Hz monitor with modelines for 48Hz and 50Hz, do I need display-resample or not?

      Anonymous

not really unless you want interpolation

      Anonymous

yes, because even if two clocks should match on paper, they never do in real life, they will drift
this is why any time two devices need to be operated in sync, they are hooked together with a common clock source
since this is not something you can do with your computer video and sound hardware, the next best thing is to designate one clock as the master, and resample everything else to suit
since resampling audio is much easier, it makes sense to sync the video, and let the audio be slightly resampled to keep it in sync with the video

        Anonymous

what you aren't mentioning to him is the fact this is placebo and the traditional implementation of audio-sync works perfectly fine

          Anonymous

not if you want to completely avoid video interpolation, which is the reason you'd setup suitable modelines in the first place

            Anonymous

if you set up a modeline you dont need interpolation, but you also dont need display-resample

            Anonymous

in an ideal world that would be true, but in practice you can't expect software frame pacing and the video cards' actual refresh rate clock to be perfectly in sync, even if they're both 60fps and 60Hz (for example)
that's two different clock sources, you have to resample (temporally stretch) the video to match the video cards' clock, that means resampling the audio to match (keep the video and audio in sync)

  92. 2 weeks ago

Interestingly enough I can't even replicate the png "washing out" problem on chromium-based browsers anymore. Only Firefox exhibits it even if you set color management mode to 1 in about:config. So either chromium fixed their shit or chromium ignores colorspace tags now
