That's it exactly. Cfl has a "fallback" for when the local correlation is too low and these just use RAVU for that instead of the stock polar bicubic.

      don't need to fix near-perfection.
perfection is ssrc-hp, which hasn't seen an update since 2016.
Audio space works slower than video, since it's all been largely perfected for 50 years.

Video is only starting to mature.

you're shit out of luck for swf. If i remember correctly newgrounds used to actually host a program for this called swivel but i dunno if its maintained anymore.

a lot of swf conversion software literally just does screenrecording AFAIK. so you could technically use OBS to record your screen and let the flash play.

is that why AV1 bloats like any other codec when noise is introduced? I wouldn't make any assumptions regarding quality retention. AV1's primary use case is to reduce file sizes for streaming. If quality is your main concern you would use legacy tooling geared towards h264.
            also,
            >the av1 encode is likely to have less of it

my switch running nxmp uses 2.5w for h265 and 4w for av1 (although it does drop a couple of frames here and there)

people said the same thing about h.265 vs. h.264, way slower encoding and decoding in exchange for 30-40%
but you don't download h.264 anymore, do you?
a saving is a saving (you can't say it's only half), once the newer format becomes as trivial to use as the last, it becomes the standard, why wouldn't it? at this point encoding and decoding av1 is very competitive in performance, and hardware decoders are quickly becoming common
h.265 is just about the new h.264, a legacy option for things like battery-powered devices without an av1 decoder, or >10 year old computers

av1 will be legacy when h.266 is mainstream (and it will for all high quality primetime contents, not only for low quality internet streams)

That's never happening, AV1 is being backed by pretty much every big tech company and has way more support than h.266 has (and probably ever will)

            Anonymous

yea i don't see mpeg taking back over
one of the main reasons for AV1's existence was to get out from under mpeg's thumb, there's no way they spent all this effort just to go back to paying mpeg royalties

        >but you don't download h.264 anymore, do you?
um yes? probably 90% of my animu collection is h264

        Anonymous

vp9/av1 are paypig streaming formats created so entertainment providers can save a dime on bandwidth.
when it comes to personally owned or downloaded media, AV1 has no use case. oh you really need to store 24 minute animu episodes at no more than 200 MB a file? you can do that with any codec and it will look like garbage even with AV1. Just buy another hard drive, storage is cheap. These new codecs will come and go but h264 is bedrock technology like IPv4, it will still be around in 100 years.

Ok sisters, I come here with a very serious question today, can any of the gamma schizos explain this: https://slow.pics/c/csVaC5jC

Baseline = normal case, no transformations
    gamma22 to gamma24 = --vf=format:gamma=gamma2.2 --target-trc=gamma2.4
    gamma24 to gamma22 = --vf=format:gamma=gamma2.4 --target-trc=gamma2.2

Basically the expectation is that setting "--vf=format:gamma=gamma2.4 --target-trc=gamma2.2" should make the screenshot darker as we're literally saying the TRC is brighter than the forcefully tagged gamma curve. This works on vo=gpu but it doesn't on vo=gpu-next.

The opposite case works on both VOs, and setting --target-contrast=inf doesn't seem to change anything (as it shouldn't, none of these curves cares about display contrast).

      Anonymous

      Another reason to avoid gpu-next

      Anonymous

Your understanding matches mine - if you set decode gamma lower than display gamma, then things will be brightened. If decode gamma is higher than display gamma, things will be darkened.

Seems gpu-next is broken then. Don't bother telling haasn, he'll just send his minions to throw random specs at you.

Dumb take, we're talking about a software which interacts with services on the internet who often are hostile to it.
It doesn't matter which language you use, it's going to break regardless and often, Python being fast to develop and modify is the right choice for scrapers.
The only problem of youtube-dl/yt-dlp is that they do not use asyncio.

why do TV broadcasts look like shit? isnt cable TV considered high bandwidth? it unironically looks like your typical mpeg2 encode

any sages here who can explain why streaming unironically looks better than TV most of the time?

      Anonymous

      there's a chance it actually is mpeg2
there's a few reasons why tv doesn't advance as quickly, for one, people don't upgrade their tv/receiver as often, and because cable is a one-way platform unlike the internet, it can't simply request a different format depending on how capable your set is
like on the internet, they can serve you h264, h265, vp9, av1 at various resolution, to suit your connection and device, allowing support for both old and new devices/formats, while cable is forced to provide a lowest-common-denominator format
they could broadcast multiple formats at the same time, but that uses more bandwidth, of which there is a limited amount, so they would rather push more channels than more formats

          1) Having ewa_lanczossharp in your config is literally pointless because you're already using ravu.
          2) Scale-antiring isn't doing anything either.
          3) PIxelClipper doesn't affect ravu or cfl so it's only doing anything useful when you downscale.
          4) You can switch to ravu-zoom-pc-r3 for a small performance boost.
          5) You can safely drop cfl and it likely won't make a huge difference.

It's not new but in a nutshell the Matroska spec says to calculate PAR after applying cropping values. However real world files apparently do not do this and mpv does PAR first and then crops. This subject came up again because of some autism about how blend-subtitles works with video crop (who the frick even does this). Anyways mkvs that actually have crop metadata are pretty rare, I think mpv is literally the only player that supports it and that is of course very recent.

Yeah it depends on what you're running, i i tested it on a snapdragon 860 phone and there was almost no performance gain by using it, it fricks up the colors in HDR as well

which pre-compiled mpv version should I use on Windows? The sourceforge version seems sketchy.

      >seems sketchy
      Why?

        Anonymous

First the maintainer is completely anonymous, no ways to contact or anything. It seems only hosted on sourceforge (which I don't really trust). Second wtf is the difference between ''64bit-v3'' and ''64bit'' both binaries track the same github build number, but have a different CRC and filesize? Third it's hosted on sourceforge.

          Anonymous

you can download the same builds from github. but there's nothing wrong with sourceforge inherently, it's not any different from other sites like fosshub

Okay, I might be slightly moronic, it's explained:

            >Difference between x86_64 and x86_64-v3
            >x86_64-v3 build have these instructions enabled by default:
            >avx avx2 bmi bmi2 fma lzcnt movbe sse3 sse4 sse4.1 sse4.2 ssse3 xsave sahf mwait crc32 cx16 popcnt f16c
            >Cpu which dont have these features will fail to launch the x86_64-v3 build

Can someone less moron explain what that means?

            Anonymous

those are cpu instructions. If you have an old cpu it probably only supports up to sse4 and not avx2

            Anonymous

it means use v3. the other one is for old cpu

v3 has no speed benefits and is sometimes slower and causes bugs and artifacts

not that anon but avx2 for example is quite slow and makes your intel cpu make housefire if it's older than 12th gen

how did the hybridslop cuckcore architecture frick up this time?

            Anonymous

not related to big-little at all, it's just bad optimization on their part. they had similar issues with avx512 and in the end killed support for it altogether

            Anonymous

They didn't. AVX512 is still supported on SKUs without E cores. It's only disabled on the hybrid SKUs because operating systems expect all cores to support the same instructions.

            Anonymous

You're misunderstanding what I'm talking about
            https://travisdowns.github.io/blog/2020/08/19/icl-avx512-freq.html

Intel CPUs used to downclock themselves when activating AVX-512 to prevent making housefires. This would result in WORSE performance with AVX-512 than without it. https://lemire.me/blog/2018/08/15/the-dangers-of-avx-512-throttling-a-3-impact/

This is also true for AVX2 in Haswell-era CPUs.

            Anonymous

Technical limitation of past generations doesn't make the instruction set and wider registers less useful. AVX512 is extremely important in some applications. ffmpeg is one of them. You seem to be parroting something you heard, but don't understand really the whole picture.
And don't quote 6 years old posts as current status, especially in fast moving technology field.

Intel recognized that AVX512 is not that useful for average Joe, especially for gaming. It is a trade-off to make E cores smaller. We have to remember that Intel is loosing to AMD on CPU architecture really hard lately, they made some desperate decisions to keep them "competitive", but you can't infer from them that "AVX512 is dropped".

just use v3 and don't worry about it. these cutting edge instructions are hardly used in the first place.

video is 23.976hz, you're not going to get the BFI effect you desire without your monitor supporting a 23.976hz bfi modeline, which would have extremely noticeable flickering if it actually existed (it doesn't)

It's a moronic placebo setting by hypocritical miniencoders. If you actually cared about preserving max quality you would just watch the source video instead of obsessing over placebo parameters. If you are re-encooooding, expect reduction in quality, simple as.

    use zhongfly's mpv builds

however I still don't know how to use github actions to make builds from his repository instead of waiting for his bot to do it

what's the difference between his builds and mpv.io ones?

        Anonymous

        mpv.io doesn't officially build anything
there's two main contenders for pre builds, shinchiro and zhongfly
zhongfly creates new builds much much faster than shinchiro so that's why he's the better choice
