its literally that simple, how can mpv be this incompetent? how do other applications know what your output bit depth is?

Also reading EDID will add a new dependency to mpv unless they NIH it, which I doubt it.

whats the problem? the display is already dithering down to 10 bits, there should be no color banding. you cant work around every issue. the point is to just not have banding

and if you intentionally set dither depth to 12 do you get color banding or not? again, there's no reason to halt improvements because of edge cases

            can't test (but probably not)

            Anonymous

then realistically reading the edid should be fine and is a more ideal solution for the auto-detect than the current status quo of trusting the highest depth backbuffer. the only issue being the dependency bloat of course

        Anonymous

It'd be responsibility of the os-backend code to do the reading. Surely windows has an API to get edid info. Loonix probably doesn't unless you install libbloat though

          Anonymous

          >Surely windows has an api to get edid info
you can get the edid but you have to parse it yourself, hence the need for a dependency, because windows doesn't have an API for bpc info

if you change settings to make it encode as fast on a cpu it will look like shit as well
while hardware encoding does have a major efficiency advantage (not compression efficiency, but rather how much computing power is required to get the same result), the hardware in question is still tiny and very low power compared to a cpu
the purpose of it is for fast/real time, low power encoding, not for making encode-once-watch-many encodes that you want to keep
things like livestreams and video calls on low power hardware or when the cpu is otherwise occupied (phones, laptops, playing games, etc), or for in-home streaming where you can just use a high bitrate and not require a good compression ratio (like a media server to a television)

I've seen other projects dropping winpthreads recently but I don't know if toolchain portability has anything to do with it. If anything kasper and haasn keep mumbling about dropping gcc support and going clang-only, it's 2024 after all.

mpv has had an internal pthread implementation for windows forever. Kasper just rewrote it so it wasn't hacky garbage that overrode function symbols. If this upsets you, you can just disable the feature in the build and link to mingw instead. what are you even complaining about?

As a relatively new mpv user, I am not really familiar with all the lore and wanted to find out what happened to wm4 by doing some archive reps. I still don't really know but apparently at some point he had a repo called mpv2 under his account? I thought the "wm4's Rust fork" thing was a joke????
That drama era seemed really insane from the little I saw of it.
Anyway, does anyone know what he's up to these days?

the lore is completely unnecessary to use mpv. it's just something autists here care about even though wm4 was a terrible friend and a prick.

This changes the grain every monitor refresh, not every video frame, which looks terrible. I know that's how telecined releases looked anyway but everything else about those was also bad.

            Anonymous

Well the only other way I know of in mpv is increasing the fake grain from the deband shader and setting deband-iterations to 0. But the grain the deband shader uses is a bit too sharp for a lot of these degrained bluray releases.

            Anonymous

its too sharp, it looks better for higher resolution film, but for a lot of tv anime the smooth version is more convincing

hmmm I just tried it with dagashi kashi, in my end smooth one 'destructive'

            Anonymous

they're both "destructive", you're adding fake grain to the luma for an image that has no grain. a grain shader isn't going to restore the lost details from degrained footage. its just a filter for the "vibes"

    https://files.catbox.moe/hjfvx3.png (poor subtitle rendering)
https://files.catbox.moe/7qev9t.png (BakaBT's take on the matter)
    >Font cache needs to be rebuilt on every file
    >Limited scaling options
    >libplacebo only used for tonemapping (as of 3.0.20)
    >Will not render any Advanced Substation Alpha subtitle with the ScaledBorderAndShadow flag in header
    >Bad with gifs
    >Corrupts the video decoding if it takes too much time to decode a single frame, other players skip the frames
    >Wrong chroma location (MPEG-1 for everything)
    >Uses point upscaling for chroma
    >Can't go back a single frame

is there a convenient way to convert .jxl screencaps to .jpg to post on IQfy? imagemagick works fine but then I have to deal with typing out the filename, something bash completion doesn't help with if I have thousands of the same show

setup a custom action in your file manager so you can just right click > convert to jpeg or whatever

It's not, but I don't think the problem showed up at either 2x or 0.5x.

0.5 is probably affected, maybe it is not that big difference though
