the problem is debanding at the cost of shrinking file size which crushes other details.

repairing these artifacts using per-scene debanding and EEDI3 is inherently destructive. you will end up destroying some details. just accept that you encode has artifacts and move on. its not worth raping the image

        Anonymous

moron, descaling exists you dont need fricking EEDI3.
You're clearly not an encoder but desperately want to larp as one.

          Anonymous

LARP detected. You don't just leave a video in its descaled resolution, and not all aliasing is caused by bad upscaling. (In fact, a majority of aliasing has nothing to do with the upscaler that was used)

            Anonymous

People would be shocked if they knew encoders actually use waifu2x to upscale now, their beloved NNEDI3 has been replaced and they don't even know.

            Anonymous

Both of them are destructive. I'll just take the raw BD, thanks. I don't need someone to descale it then slap a meme filter on it.

            Anonymous

LARP detected, FMAB is descaleable and you can just upscale back to 1080p with something better. Crazy how I have to explain basic concepts to you, diaper.

            Anonymous

this doesn't contradict anything I've said. it's just a factoid that i already said in my post. the reality is most aliasing is unrelated to the upscaler, hence why people descale then reupscale the image with some meme neural network garbage to "repair" (read: rape) the image with some equally as moronic gauss supersample

simply descaling the image is not going to get rid of aliasing if its baked in and unrelated to the scaler. now go back to your discord and parrot more talking points you don't understand

            Anonymous

LARP detected once again, if you ever descaled FMAB yourself (I know you have't because you're just larping) you'd see that all of the show's aliasing is entirely the upscale. Diapertroon btfo'd

don't bother, trying to install madVR nowadays is a complete shitshow after it went freemium. and the only "usable" video renderer for MPC-HC is MPC-VR, which is a dead-end project made by incompetent devs. (you could say madVR is a dead-end project as well, though madshi is certainly far from incompetent)

the reality is no one really makes good directshow software anymore because the practice of making windows-exclusive applications is basically dead.

no I want to use it for cooming.... default behavior in mpv for me is that seeking is kind of random in how many seconds it skips, and it doesn't jump to the previous seek location if I seek back and forth a couple of time. seek exact is the same but less random, if you skip back and forth the video still progresses. mpc-hc does what I'm asking for by default

you can't surpass interpolation filters in "objective' metrics without destructively altering the image. FIR filters already hit the endgame with lanczos. hence why super resolution models even exist in the first place...

blur does not exist, bicubic_fast just lets you see the true nature of the image's lack of detail
it's physically and evolutionarily equivalent to leaning forward to look closer at the interesting thing

bait used to be believable. at the very least say nearest or bilinear, that makes more sense than bicubic_fast which adds blurring to the image

            >bait used to be believable. at the very least say nearest or bilinear, that makes more sense than bicubic_fast which adds blurring to the image
i have tested all the scaling filters in mpv and bicubic(_fast) is the only one that doesn't add/amplify weird artifacts when upscaling (blur is not an artifact)
bilinear looks crappy too, i think anyone recommending it just doesn't realize what they actually want is bicubic

            Anonymous

            (me)
i forgot the details but i think bicubic's one good point was that it didn't change the colors in the image (making dark lines darker to "sharpen" them and so on). looking closer at a physical object doesn't do that

the absolute state of this general. do you newbies even know what this chart is anymore? or has this general gone to complete shit over the fast few months?

these are all piecewise functions. you dont get any of the antialiasing properties of the B parameter without adding blur to the image, this is why cardinal splines are all aliasy but sharp, and thats why bilinear is actually sharper than "bicubic" (technically called b-spline).

god this general is so shit now. are there even any og posters left?

            >i don't want to sharpen the image, i want to make the same image larger
Use nearest. This is truly the endgame. Mathematically correct scaler that uses correct pixels from image. Easy to understand and perfect results.

            Anonymous

this is a joke reply, no one uses nearest except for gba speedruns where you can count the number of pixels on one hand
it doesn't have to be mathematically correct but physically accurate
nearest makes the image pixelated but you don't see pixelation anywhere in the real world
meanwhile some amount of blur has always existed for as long as there have been organisms capable of seeing things
maybe if you hit your head and messed up your brain you'd see pixelation (or compression/other artifacts amplified or added by any of the other scalers) but that's not normal or healthy

his post is fundamentally flawed, pixels are not squares, never have been, they're conceptually infinitely small points; samples.
there's nothing "perfect" about nearest-neighbour interpolation, pretty much the only advantage it has is that it does not introduce any new colours into the picture, which can be beneficial for some uses

i hope you realize that this applies to every built-in filter. you're just interpolating existing information,so all scaling kernels are "nondestructive". this why filters are reversible in the first place.

It's basically impossible without including GTK/Qt hacky shitmess code and completely raping the codebase. This is only feasible for win32 and macOS

    I need mpv to
    >play the next video in the explorer after the next

Not sure if you're trying to point out the obvious or wrongcorrecting what i said

          Anonymous

i don't know what that means, but he's right, bitrate and size are directly correlated, it doesn't make sense to say 2x bitrate but only 1.5x size, they're either both 2x or both 1.5x

            Anonymous

Perhaps the issue is that i referred to stream as a live video which clearly was clearly encoded JIT hence why i never said that 2x bitrate is 1.5x but rather that the output came to be about that size

Use sane crf value and should be fine. Also in general livestreams are heavily compressed and recompressing it may be tricky, because it has already lots of artifact that encoder tries to preserve...

To be specific, i used crf17 as i saw it marked as being inside the range of "lossless"
            >Also in general livestreams are heavily compressed and recompressing it may be tricky, because it has already lots of artifact that encoder tries to preserve..
            ohno...

in any case, using a newer codec doesn't automatically mean getting a smaller result, it just means that you can get a smaller result with the same quality, but it depends entirely on your settings
you have to use a lower bitrate than the source to make it smaller, the bitrate is literally how much data is used for every second of the video (usually on average, since you typically want it to vary depending on the content)
live streams are generally already very low bitrate, so most people wouldn't recommend trying to make them smaller, but if you're also downscaling them and really don't care much about the best quality, then it can still be an option

I see. Previously i had rencoded a few higher quality videos following the same steps and they came out to be at 1/3, 1/2 the size halving and a bit more the bitrate and reducing the resolution if too high.
Here i thought i could get away by them having samey bitrate and just using the same encoding arguments but it seems i missunderstood what crf is supposed to do, nor did i consider the source having more artifacts. Thanks.

            >To be specific, i used crf17 as i saw it marked as being inside the range of "lossless"
i think you've mistaken this as meaning "smaller than the source, but looks almost as good"
if only it were that simple

So mpv basically captures and re-encodes the videos?

            Anonymous

mpv doesn't capture or encode video, it only plays video
if you're doing these then you'd have to be using some script for it
if you want to rip/save a stream, you should be using yt-dlp

Okay, now I get it. Some dumb guy wanted to pretend to be cool so didn't answer my question in any meaningful way.

Also, may I know, why play youtube videos via mpv when there are websites like invidious?

            Anonymous

you didn't ask a question to begin with...
            >Also, may I know, why play youtube videos via mpv when there are websites like invidious?
invidious is limited to streams with both video and audio muxed together, which means up to 720p30
you also miss out on any enhancements you may have setup in mpv versus playing video in a browser in general
i generally browse using invidious, then open them in mpv for playback

gallery-dl still works on instagram. Are you sure it's a yt-dlp problem? One problem is that these sites change up all the time to combat downloaders. Another problem is that they quickly rate-limit you. Instagram for one blocks your IP for a day if you go through more than one page as a guest.
