It can't for now but you can do a quick hack like this
          // Update scaling now.
          - if (single_output_spanned(wl))
          + if (wl->current_output)
          update_output_scaling(wl);

Yes you should use madVR with mpc-hc instead

      Anonymous

Keep VLC as a backup, use mpv as your main.

  24. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Playback related things that madVR does better than mpv:

    >Proper RGB output where red means red (R:255 G:0 B:0), and green means green (R:0 G:255 B:0). No bullshit. This is currently not possible on mpv.
    >Custom modeline support that allows for perfect frame pacing. No resampling required (23.976Hz, 24.000Hz, 29.970Hz, 59.940Hz...).
    >Support for proper color management and 3DLUTs. Respects your intelligence and display calibration without raising your black levels.
    >Proper projector support (lens memory number, cropping masked borders, anamorphic lens support).
    >3D playback.
    >madshi's custom SmoothMotion algorithm that is smoother than mpv's blurry temporal interpolation (tscale=oversample is NOT "smoothmotion", and it's currently broken on mpv)
    >IVTC and deinterlacing with advanced autodetect heuristics

Rendering related tasks that madVR does better:

    >*EXTENSIVE* HDR tonemapping options (mpv only has 2-3 tunable options)
    >Better debanding.
    >Can remove compression artifacts while keeping details intact. No CNNs required.
    >Can remove ringing artifacts that are part of the encode.
    >Support for optimally configured Jinc 3 (mpv is not optimally configured).
    >Optimally configured KrigBilateral support without pixel shifting.
    >Built-in 2D SSIM downscaler that is configured with Jinc (mpv shader does not support polar downscaling).
    >Super-xBR support, a cheap alternative to Jinc 3 for high quality chroma scaling.
    >Provides NGU upscaling CNN for high quality video output. Comes in various flavors: NGU Standard (better than FSRCNNX), NGU Sharp (not available on mpv), NGU AA (better than RAVU), NGU Soft (not available on mpv).
    >High quality sharpening filters, such as LumaSharpen, AdaptiveSharpen, and SuperRes. Comes with debloating artifact removal.
    >Support error diffusion dithering algorithms that are tuned by madshi himself for quality and speed. Better and sharper than mpv's gaussian blur blue noise smear pattern.
    >Better antiringing.
    >Better gamut mapping.

basically akemi came out against haasn with sexual harassment allegations

remember when haasn claimed that he was developing a native metal backend, but never actually delivered? essentially what happened was akemi was the one who asked for it to be developed since moltenvk at the time was stalled. haasn accepted but said that he would only do it if akemi "returned the favor", and suggested that they met up in real life for coffee to discuss the implementation (this is the point at which haasn said that he was going to work on it)

long and short, haasn started getting handsy and groped certain places, akemi got uncomfortable and stormed away, leaving haasn sexually frustrated. this has apparently been a big riff for a while now, hence why haasn resents as he calls them "applegays" and completely left mac development by the wayside.

Let me translate his issue from moronese to English. His issue is that bt.1886 screenshots use a backup colorspace tag with a gamma power curve of 1.96, so when image viewers cant parse the correct colorspace tag, they fall back to a 1.96 power curve. Same thing happens to sRGB screenshots if you somehow have an ancient ass image viewer that doesn't know what "sRGB" is, it will fallback to a 2.2 curve.

            Anonymous

tagging srgb as 2.2 is ok as a fallback, it's not going to produce drastically different results. tagging bt1886 as 1.96 is going to produce very different results (unless you're on apple platforms and use quicktime).

            Anonymous

It's an approximation of one of the curves, but BT.709 gamma transfer is piecewise, so 1.96 is not going to be similar to bt.1886 at all as you said (very easily reproducible on firefox and of course windows photo viewer, looks washed out compared to an image viewer that respects bt.1886 like chrome).

It would be less of a hassle to have it fall back to 2.2, which is close enough to sRGB and most people wouldn't care

            [...]
both of you are wrong and correct at the same time. Even though you cant full encapsulate bt.1886 with a pure gamma curve, 1.96 IS close enough to bt.1886 to the point where only autists would notice the difference.

the issue is that image viewers don't know what the frick 1.96 OR bt.1886 is, so they will fallback to 2.2. this is why they look more washed out in the first place, because only shatpple can parse 1.96 since quicktime uses 1.96.

            /thread
            /fpbp
            /shutthefrickup

No, you're wrong. inverse of bt709 curve is approximated by 1.961 gamma. This part is true.

What is wrong is using 1.961 as the decoding gamma. In their absolute moronic way, the ~~*standards*~~ bodies decided the video decode gamma is not simply the inverse of the encode. It used to be like 2.4 or something in CRT days, but then they decided to be even more moronic and introduced bt1886 where you can't even specify a single value and it instead depends on your individual monitor contrast.

Decoding bt1886 and 1.96 is going to give you very different results to what you would expect (unless you're on quicktime since apple for whatever reason still prefers the lower gamma to bring up the shadows).

For a fallback for bt1886, I'd argue 2.2 is probably best fit since most people have a bog-standard 1000:1 contrast monitor. 2.4 is the next best option.

that would mean they look less washed, more washed would be lower gamma

            set your target-trc to 2.4 on a non-OLED display

            Anonymous

setting target-trc to 2.4 makes target gamma higher, so more washed. What you said is --vf=format:gamma=gamma2.2 instead --vf=format:gamma=gamma2.0 (1.96) and this which makes source gamma the same as target, making it darker.

            Anonymous

i dunno, target-trc=gamma2.2 on mpv looks identical to how Windows Photos shows a bt.1886 mpv screenshot on my 1000:1 CR display

huhn's problem is unironically the fact that madVR is incorrect. madVR assumes a pure gamma curve of 2.2 for uncalibrated displays, and it takes all of its png screenshots in sRGB. he's comparing oranges to apples

I'd agree with this solution. Or if you want to be autistic, make it yet another flag. Or do something autistic and use the current value of --target-contrast to decide what gamma best approximates.

There can be autistic debates about 2.2 vs 2.4 decode gamma, but mpv using 1.96 encode gamma is absolutely wrong, especially since mpv doesn't do the reverse and decode bt1886 as 1.96 (if quicktime produced screenshots, then maybe it would have an argument for using 1.96).

. By design bt1886 is pants on head moronic so no single value will work for all monitors. But almost certainly 1.96 is the wrong value for every monitor, while 2.2 will work for a large subset (and 2.4 will work for another subset).

bt.1886 without black point elevation (aka assuming infinite contrast) is basically gamma2.4

and firefox.. and literally every other image viewer outside of mpv itself.. and any updated electron app.

either way, falling back to 1.96 makes no sense. bt.1886 as displayed by mpv doesn't look even remotely close to a pure gamma curve of 1.96.

      >As I understand your issue is with 1.961 value and that's fair, but you have to go to FFmpeg devs to change/fix that. The value is not made by mpv or libplacebo it is in ffmpeg image writer / png encoder.
