    >man ffmpeg
    >yt-dlp -h
    or have some other resource(s)?

say I wanna crop some recordings I made using ffmpeg, from-time-x-to-y
how would you figure the correct command combo to sort it out?

      Anonymous

Google it and it's likely the first stackoverflow result for something so simple. Although for that specifically I have vague knowledge that it's something like ffmpeg -i file -ss x -to y output probably with some codec commands like copy.

      >yt-dlp
the yt-dlp hook extension that mpv uses has yt-dlp pass the URL to mpv, which in turn makes the network connection, no?

Create a separate firejail profile for yt-dlp and use the --read-only and --read-write flags in an alias to see what parts of your filesystem yt-dlp can access. Same goes for anything you want to provide network access. Limit what it can access on your system.

I can make them for you until you learn yourself, because spoonfeeding is harmful:
You can quickly find resources on this from a google search, and in the archive
      Upload to: https://catbox.moe/

    Hello there.
Why does it say 2 -> 8? Is it upmixing content before sending it to the system mixer?
    I'm using
    audio-channels=auto
and I have tried stereo as well
my mixer has HeSuVi which does virtualization to it should be feed actual 2 channel audio that it then upmixes itself, it seems that now it just doesn't upmix at all as it detects 8ch.

      Anonymous

I don't do winshit. But it appears that your default (or configured) AO is 8 channel.
So you need to either fix your system settings, or see if AO has multiple PCMs and configure the correct one.
Start with `--audio-device=help` and go from there.

        Anonymous

ok so I thought I was clear.
My system has to be 8 because I virtualize that to stereo using HeSuVi.
HeSuVi can auto-detect 2ch output and upmix it to 8ch which in turn get virtualized back (sounding fine)
As it stands now because mpv sends 8 channels 6 empty 2 stereo, HeSuVi straight virtualizes as if it got feed real 8 channels. (sounding bad)

          Anonymous

Sane solution: Find a way to skip virtualization when input is stereo (need a 2channel PCM option from your AO you can use as an audio-device, and an maybe an mpv auto-profile).

moronic Solution: use lavfi surround filter to upmix strereo to make it fake-surround, so you can get fake-binural in your ears.
          https://ffmpeg.org//ffmpeg-all.html#surround

            Anonymous

            I found a manual way.
I have to check that every time. (pic content format section)
Or the long way is to waste a lot of time changing all my plugins and system to 2.0.
I was expecting MPV to be capable of just output two channels by force.

Well I'm very happy that I've learned this is not possible. I'll not waste time thinking about this anymore.
Thank you for your time and attention.

    Hi!
I'm using screenshot-template="%F_%ty%tm%td_%tH%tM%tS%wT" in my mpv.conf to print the original video file's name followed by an underscore, the current local time stamp, another underscore and then the time stamp of the moment I'm screenshotting.
However, %ty is only printing "24" instead of "2024".
How can I correct that? What's the right parameter to use there?
Should I just 20%ty and call it a day?

mpv protip: if you're watching an old dvd and it looks washed out, use vf=format:gamma=gamma2.8 to correct the gamma

      Anonymous

      First suspect should be colorlevels.

This should be tried first (forces correction, regardless of what metadata the stream has):

      lavfi=[colorlevels=rimin=.03125:gimin=.03125:bimin=.03125:romax=0.96875:gomax=0.96875:bomax=0.96875]

        Anonymous

        What does this do exactly?

          Anonymous

"Corrects" TV colorlevels in a file mistakenly thought to have PC colorlevels.
Always works, regardless of metadata, possible double conversions, ...etc.
          Requires software decoding.

Same filter with the following params can be tried if colors still look washed:
          lavfi=[colorlevels=rimin=.0625:gimin=.0625:bimin=.0625:romax=0.9375:gomax=0.9375:bomax=0.9375]

This can be combined with adjusting gamma if needed, until you get something that looks right.

The reverse can also be done if opposite symptoms manifest:

          lavfi=[colorlevels=rimax=0.96875:gimax=0.96875:bimax=0.96875:romin=.03125:gomin=.03125:bomin=.03125]

          lavfi=[colorlevels=rimax=0.9375:gimax=0.9375:bimax=0.9375:romin=.0625:gomin=.0625:bomin=.0625]

How do you use the fps filter and guarantee that the first frame is not skipped over?

I tried to set "round:zero" and "round:down" but that didn't work.
    --> "start_time:0" also didn't work!
Something that did work was to set "start_time:-1" but what does that even do?

    https://ffmpeg.org//ffmpeg-filters.html#fps
    >Assume the first PTS should be the given value, in seconds. This allows for padding/trimming at the start of stream. By default, no assumption is made about the first frame’s expected PTS, so no padding or trimming is done. For example, this could be set to 0 to pad the beginning with duplicates of the first frame if a video stream starts after the audio stream or to trim any frames with a negative PTS.
say what? does this change my output video to start before timestamp 0 or something, i don't want that

      Anonymous

Ok I could get it to work with "start_time:0:round=up", which doesn't make sense to me since the docs say
      >up: round towards +infinity
which makes me think 0.3 should round to a frame at timestamp 0.31 rather than 0.29 but i guess its vice versa for some reason

ffmpeg clearly prefers 0.29 over 0.31

i noticed the video is encoded in vp8, which probably means you used some horrid conversion site or a fossil tier ffmpeg wrapper like webm for morons
your video is in fact pretty much a video encoders dream, so i could easily more than halve its size with minimal impact. i can probably halve it again and still have it readable:

        Thanks anon
I used VP8 because I thought VP9 was not supported here but it's been so long since I did any serious attempt at encoding that I guess my information was way out of date
        >some horrid conversion site or a fossil tier ffmpeg wrapper
I was tweaking the command line arguments by hand
That wasn't my best attempt but it also wasn't my worst by far

    >[fps filter parameter] eof_action - Action performed when reading the last frame.
    >Possible values are:
    >round - Use same timestamp rounding method as used for other frames.
    >pass - Pass through last frame if input duration has not been reached yet.

Can somebody explain what "pass through last frame if input duration has not been reached yet" means? I've tried searching but nothing.

Good idea I guess but the docs should be more clear and save people a lot of time just finding the relevant code file

      Anonymous

i think i get the gist of it
my guess is pass bulldozes through to make sure all frames are encoded
while round prioritizes replicating the exact same video length
use defaults when in doubt, less overhead for you unless there is a noticeable and practical impact

        Anonymous

in my tests neither manages to get exact same video length.
i tend to lean towards using defaults but problem is i'm giving "round=up" to the filter so it would be good to know if i also should use "eof_action=pass" to counter the other thing that changes the default

In ffmpeg what's the best way to resize a video to be smaller without colors changing?
Is it something to do with output pixel format or should I tell it to resize using more bits per color or what?

using "-pix_fmt +" to select the same format as the input video doesn't work btw

How is the Google arms race? I'm using the Debian stable mpv/yt-dlp which is about a year out of date and am inconsistently seeing throttling (websearching mentions "60KB/s" which seems about right) but there seems to be a bunch of angles from which to come at a bunch of similar-appearing issues.

Should I install from backports or flatpak before fricking about with anything?

I also want to smooth over usability by getting everything youtube to route to the same place. I gather that I can make a URL scheme so that any link in browser (random youtube links, using invidious as frontend, etc) routes to mpv. But I'm not clear on how to make the redirect (from original URL to scheme URL) "clean" i.e. without opening the page before redirecting which a userscript operating on the domain seems to do.

It seems that the recent attempt by Google to frick up invidious has passed and I can kinda make do with that but the player is inferior. I haven't tried installing pipe-viewer yet (still new to linux and want to minimize installs outside of package manager) and it's not clear what its player is.

just download the latest yt-dlp and place it in $path

it’s written in perl so good luck with its dependencies
