it was originally set up to test if mint could be booted and installed with 1G of ram
and by the end of the thread it was running alpine with 256M of ram

the first bit was to help someone who was having issues installing mint on a machine with 1G ram, the initramfs was failing to unpack with a write error, and i just had to see for myself if it was due to him having less than the requirements, because i found it hard to believe it would need that much ram
in the end i guess i didn't find out why his didn't boot
i hadn't done an alpine install before, it's pretty nice, it's like if openwrt had desktop packages. still playing around with it

            Anonymous

            >there's leaner ways to do it
Naturally. I have an old laptop with a duo core, one made before they started using 64-bit architecture, with the original 128GB HDD in, amazingly, good condition. It's certainly not pretty when it hits swap, but it works well enough for what I use it for.
            > i would not really suggest using a web browser to watch youtube videos on a 256M ram machine
I would not suggest using a machine with 256 MB of RAM in any situation if your aim is to run desktop applications.

Hey anon, that's really cool, thanks for sharing. Is that some distribution or did you put it together from scratch? Also, is there a possibility that, since it is a virtual machine, is it possible that whenever it writes to swap, it is actually getting cached in ram on the host system since it has free memory? Can you be sure that the virtual swap does actually get committed to disk?

            Anonymous

            >Is that some distribution or did you put it together from scratch?
            it's alpine linux, running cwm
            >whenever it writes to swap, it is actually getting cached in ram on the host system
it likely is being cached like any other writes, though the vm does still slow down a bit when you thrash swap, like running mint (

it was originally set up to test if mint could be booted and installed with 1G of ram
and by the end of the thread it was running alpine with 256M of ram
i hope that explains it better

            )
in any case, i'm not seriously suggesting using modern firefox on a machine with 256M ram

Do you know any way to enable html5 playback in firefox then? I am able to play videos and streams in ffmplay, vlc or even youtube sometimes but things like nvidious and 3rd party players do not work.

you have to compile firefox with --enable-ffmpeg

    More ram = More usage
Generic VM drivers has no impact in ram usage.

In same condition as yours, but using 1gb of ram, tinycore uses 32mb of ram....on desktop, with the whole system copied to ramfs.

I think you have no idea how small tinycore is.
