Nero gets a little more typical with various utilities and write format stuff, but there was no drag and drop back in a day for simple file backups.

your operating system now is just a collection of all these softwares. as practises got more popular they realised it would be beneficial to inclde software that does xyz thing into the OS. windows never used to have ISO mounting or CD burning until like late win7, because it was only after it became common practise to burn your own CDs microsoft realised they should include their own tool for it.

it's the same for everything your computer does today - as people came up with new ideas, they wrote software for it, and as the software becomes more common, they include it in the OS. file explorers used to be standalone software. I remember when winfile came out and everyone was amazed by how easy it was to organise files with a GUI compared to MSDOS. or when they added media player as a default way to view audio and video files. for more recent examples, windows 10 added a clipboard history and screenshot cropper, as well as 3d model viewing software. all of which were previously standalone softwares. now they are adding GPT and gAI to windows 11, which last year were also standalone software. hell they were sued big time in the 90s for pushing internet explorer as part of the OS, pushing out netscape and all the others. yeah, your OS never used to come with a web browser either

          Anonymous

They got a slap on the wrist for deeply integrating IE into the OS.
I can't blame MS in that timeframe for not including software that users may or may not want.
          Where is that EU today?
It may have made modern Microsoft not so much of a shitshow it is today, but, alas, I am glad they didn't.
Better MS dies off a slow agonizing death as the OS for all the normies out there, whilst power users slowly all migrate to Linux.

The first version of Win95 didn't even come with a web browser at all. You literally had to go buy Netscape Navigator at the store. You couldn't go download a browser because you didn't have one to do it

I believe zoomers don't even do this, most of them already don't understand filesystem, like directories and stuff, instead just consuming content from online platforms and using gallery/library abstractions for games or whatever, just click on button in steam and play shit.

Can you even begin to imagine the sheer ridiculousness that burning a dvd video consists of? You can't just drag and drop that if you expect it to work on a boomers 'first dvd player ever made' system no it needs to be encoded, an appropiate label maybe even a main menu if you're going full autist. codecs? xvid? u fukking wot m8.
        For this, we burned rom.
I fricking hated burning dvds mostly because of the intended recipient.

I would classify my self as a zillenial, I was born in 1997 and experienced early youtube growing up at 10 years old watching all the OG shit, I grew up on the gamecube, got an ipod when I was 12.

I think I deserve title of boomer and millennial at least halfway because I'm literally less than 3 years away from being 30yo.

IDK I wouldn't call someone nearing 30 a zoomer. maybe someone who's 16-21 can be called a zoomer but its a weird grey area.

You don't become a boomer when you get older, that's not how generations work.
Boomers were boomers from birth, they are literal BABYboom-ers.

boomer, millennial and zoomer have been used as insults. for whatever reason i rarely hear mentions of gen-x though (between boomer and millennial), i wonder why that is (perhaps because gen-x are zoomers' parents, so they don't want to offend them)

            Anonymous

Because gen-X is the only good generation.
Not spoiled like boomers and not technologically moronic like Millennials and Zoomers.

well, that or people just lump them in with boomers, which is probably just as likely, especially since zoomers tend to use "boomer" as a generic "old person" insult, like 35+, so they may use it against gen-x, perhaps not realising there's two "old people" generations

generations are by birth year, not an age range
you'll still be a zoomer (generation z) when you're 30, 40, 50, etc because you were born in 1997, that's all it means. using boomer to refer to any "old person" is itself a zoomer meme
