Technically a completely uncompressed bluray is gonna be like 90 gb for 3 hrs of content, only anime homies actually upload stuff that uncompressed though, bluray movies are often 6-12 gb though

You're not restricted to the two options "pointlessly uncompressed" and "compressed to shit."
A good quality bluray movie rip should be 20-25GB minimum depending on the content. Significantly less than that is going to have visible quality degradation. 90GB raws and remuxes are just for archival.

SMART long test and a badblocks run. They all go into a raid6 anyway so if they fail at some point I just pull them back out and replace them. Only reason I test them at all is so I can get a replacement before wasting time integrating them into my array. Otherwise any time they fail in-warranty is the same minor inconvenience.
The cost savings from buying refurbished allows me to buy more drives for the same cost, and dedicate some of those extra drives to redundancy which more than compensates for any tiny increase in failure rates.

I usually keep games I care about on my steam deck, and then the steam deck gets backed up to my NAS along side all my movies and shit. I don't think I'd have much of a reason to keep a separate additional copy of my games.
            >Are you asking for movie and video game recommendations?
Yeah, I guess. I've downloaded bundles like "the top 250 rated movies on IMDB", etc. I mostly want so many movies that if I give someone credentials to my jellyfin instance, chances are high that any movie they want to see is already there. So far every time I've done it, they've asked "ooh, do you have XYZ?" and I'd have to go download it because I didn't already have a copy.

          ?

Your ISP detects that you're torrenting by doing packet inspection and determining that a lot of your packets look like peer-to-peer bittorrent traffic. If your traffic is encrypted, they can't tell it's bittorrent traffic. Some of the peers in the swarms you're downloading from don't support encrypted connections, so you're connecting to them over an unencrypted connection that allows your ISP to see that you're generating bittorrent traffic. Forcing your client to use only encrypted connections will prevent your ISP from determining that you're torrenting.

So you're saying I should get a VPN?

            Anonymous

No, I'm saying you should check the checkbox in your torrent client settings that forces encrypted peer connections. Bittorrent has its own encryption, some older clients just don't support it. There's no reason to route all your traffic through another network just to have encryption.

You could find it in seconds if you bothered to look and had a functioning brain, but since I already have it pulled up, it's BitTorrent > Privacy > Encryption mode > Require encryption.
Note that this only stops your ISP from snooping so they don't throttle you, it doesn't stop copyright frickwits from joining your swarms and sending you DMCA letters.

Most ISPs don't care. I work for a huge telecom place and we don't keep records. You have to be watching live, which is why the FBI wiretaps everything. We used to log things but it just took so much drive space and slowed shit down. If we send you a letter, it's because the riaa was watching your ip download something they seeded openly. The letter is automatically generated. Nothing will ever actually be done. Imagine losing our highest paying customers... No thanks, I like my paycheck.

The only things you should be downloading are brand new not even released movies.

And before you say “streaming exclusive stuff” I can’t think of 5 streaming exclusives that are worthwhile.

I bought a HP Z220 server with a slow ass 4c/8t Xeon from 2012 in it, it runs headless Linux and the whole thing cost me 70 bucks.
It does multiple 4k streams but I limit my collection to 720p because my kids don’t give a shit about image quality and I’m not paying more money for storage.
Add a 10TB refurbed Toshiba drive which is under $100 and it can hold probably everything good on every single one of those streaming sites and all the movies you want to watch.
It takes a bit of fricky Linux magic to set it all up but Jellyfin works fricking great. Frick Netflix, HBO, and Disney(Hulu) and frick Paramount I ain’t paying for any of this shit ever again.
