The primary reason I decided to switch to Linux was for its minimalism and the complete control it offers over my system (Arch btw). If I wanted bloated shit with telemetry, I'd simply stick with Windows, because, at the very least, it just works.

Primary reason for me using linux is that it just werks on eight year old machines. You can press out a couple of years on old hardware easily. I had an old laptop with just 4 gb of ram that barely manages windows 11, and it works like a dream on ubuntu.

You do realise the concept of Long Term Support is not exclusive to Linux, right?

I have been bashing Ubuntu a lot on IQfy especially the GNOME standard edition but I installed in my wife's PC because it's easier and have been enjoying it so far after a few initial hurdles and installation of Dash to Panel.

Or install a minimal distro + gnome-shell. Don't even need workarounds.

...Yeah? That's why a lightweight distro is even better. Ubuntu is normie shit with a frickload of garbage preinstalled

I'm running ubuntu on real hardware right now and after one week these are my findings

    1. Programs don't open instantly and take half to near a full second to load but then after opening them a second time after you close them they open instantly. This resets after around 10 minutes and then when you open it again it takes the same as the first time as mentioned, near half a second.

    2. Snaps are much faster, app store opens instantly and loads instantly so they fixed that

    3. snapping and windows can be finicky.

    4. You can't create text files or any file by right clicking, you only have an option for a new folder which is stupid

    5. You can't rename files in the file picker by right clicking (It matters because sometimes I want to change the name of a picture to avoid archive lookup when shitposting)

That's honestly it. If they fixed the slow opening issues which I think is just gnome being shit and the context menu I could easily use ubuntu long term. It's much slower than KDE, but KDE is a buggy mess and plasma 6 failed horribly. Here's to cosmic DE, hopefully that will make linux work finally.

      >KDE is a buggy mess and plasma 6 failed horribly
Dude, 6 has only been out for like 2 months. Use 5.27 if you don't want bugs.

5.27 still has a bunch of bugs. It's just less buggy than 6. XFCE is the only sane choice in 2024.

I ended up going back to linux mint. I'll probably just stick with mint until they have a full wayland experience on cinnamon or bring back KDE.

I don't care that I have to use old X11 and cinnamon GTK, it's the only thing that's functional on the linux desktop.

I also tried the alpha of cosmic DE through popOS, seems okay but sound controls seem really half baked and buggy and there's audio crackling problems, very dissapointing even in an alpha state cosmic is just not refined.

5.27 plasma is okay but I want to use arch and arch only ships with plasma 6 and many others like fedora only ship plasma 6 now, plasma 6 isn't ready. I'm using a literal RX 590 and AMD CPU 5600X, literally a full AMD PC with parts that should be well supported by now on wayland and the sound control panel doesn't even display and is cut in half on plasma 6 with glitching. I even have an amd laptop it's just as buggy on plasma 6 wayland.

thinking of switching to noobuntu LTS. any reason why i shouldnt run unity or one of the other flavors over gnome?

      Anonymous

Unity is maintained by a 12 year old Indian; the "flavors" with DEs other than gnome are community-maintained (not actually by canonical), but other than that I don't see any reason why you couldn't use them. Kubuntu 24.04 still comes with 5.27 instead of Plasma 6, though. You can still give the normal one a shot - canonical's implementation is basically unmoronic gnome (has a panel, tray icons & desktop icons)

only thing to keep in mind is Ubuntu Pro only covers the GNOME version, which is additional 5 years of support per release. other than that, there's no reason, use whatever you prefer

Not true. Pro can also be activated on Kubuntu

Yes, but the DE packages are not covered by the subscription.

First Ubuntu users are told NOT to update to 24.04 LTS because of a bug that could break their system.

Second, virtual systems are not real. If you're not using an OS on metal, you're not using it.

major criticism of Ubuntu coming in:
    top bar macgay aethetics
unlike MacOS, the top bar in linux is dogshit
    it doesn't work
all the good linux DE's don't have a top bar or function correctly without one
KDE and Cinnamon are the only good OOTB de's
Xfce (gay) can be made good if you tweak it
Unity was aight if you wanted to be a macgay
but the current GNOME default in Ubuntu is a dogshitshow
    it's a dog's penis
you have a dog's penis in your mouth
not even a good dog, a big ass hood pitbull

      >KDE and Cinnamon are the only good OOTB de's
      lolwut
      cinnamon sucks
gnome is the only good ootb de
plasma should be the best de, but its defaults suck
if plasma just copied gnome's defaults, it would win linux
