    >people use that thing as a means to exchange
    >people give it a value to make the exchange doable and fair
    >oy vey! this isn't government approved means of exchanging value!
Hitler would have done the same thing the UK government is doing. He would be proud.

        what does ''freeze crypto'' mean

it's for morons that use exchanges instead of their own wallets

If the crypto enters the control of a financial institution (such as an exchange that cashes out crypto for USD), then the institution is obliged not to allow the amounts to exit their control (e.g. withdrawal or transfer), contact investigators, and possibly to transfer to a government controlled wallet if ultimately directed.
I expect it will most end up like sanctions. The exchange really wouldn't want to do business with a wallet that contains frozen funds and the wallet holder really wouldn't want to transfer crypto into a wallet that would result in it being frozen with no effect.
But if your crypto is already on a exchange ledger (like "crypto-for-dummies" crowdfunding platforms), then you're fricked.

You don't. This is for crypto exchanges that exist above board

So they've chosen to embolden a market for decentralized offramps, and create a scenario where there's likely a killing to be made for liquidity providers to deal in some other uncontrollable medium such as gold or silver.
BTC/Gold Gram is going to be interesting.

Isn't the whole point of crypto that they couldn't do that even if they wanted to? Where did we go wrong?

No they can't freeze your wallet
They can however flag your wallet and freeze anything that you were dumb enough to transfer to an exchange that they have jurisdiction over

Why is it that the UK always comes up with authoritarian nanny state laws?

The soul of the anglo "peoples", the core of their indelible genetic character, is submission and obedience. Strict regimentation and harsh consequences are the only things that allow the anglo to resemble a creature with higher order intelligence; without it they quickly show their true subhuman nature.

They transitioned from a monarchy to a democracy purely through leeches sucking blood. The was never a point where they wiped away the old authoritarianism.
The closest thing they had to a revolution was the Second English Civil War. It gave a lot of ground to democracy but it wasn't a shift to democracy it was a shift from one dynasty (the Stuarts) to another (the Cromwells). Also the Commonwealth of England fell apart after 7 years and the Stuarts came back.

Cromwell wanted a republic but parliament wouldn't play ball and kept proclaiming themselves superior over everyone and everything.

Cromwell gave himself a hereditary position as top dog. I don't care what he wanted, it's a fact that he made a monarchy.
