A PC is much better on so many other fronts though. It's worth the extra cost if you're not able to keep to the same price point.

Plus the cost of the games too. You'll build a library for far less through Humble Bundles, Steam sales, etc. than you will through the PS store.

same reason people choose Windows over Linux, exclusive things you can't get elsewhere. For consoles thats exclusive games, for PCs thats killer apps like Adobe software.

NTA, but that's becoming less and less of a reason to bother with consoles as far as Playstation is concerned, given that Sony wants to bring more of their games to PC, to the point where they barely have any exclusives left on the PS5. Nintendo is the only one that makes sense if you are going to buy actually buy a console and games since they actually do have a decent number of exclusive titles.

Because unless you play PC games, the physical desktop is obsolete. I know one guy my age who has a desktop and that’s only because he’s had it for several years.

Sure, but physical games can be bought used and resold, so it evens out. Most games on HB and Steam sales that go for a few bucks are old af.

      1) He bought all used parts, but the price limit is that cost of a brand-new PS5 at MSRP. If used parts are fair game, he should compare it to the going rate of a used PS5.
      2) He ended up paying $0 for the case. Saying "I could make a gaming PC better and cheaper than console, if I'm given free parts" make the whole challenge pointless.
      3) He didn't include the price of Windows. Yes, plenty of games run well with Linux, but quite many do not. You could also pirate Windows, but that brings us back to point #2.

Meanwhile games released for PC are never optimized, so you'll probably be forced to get the latest nvidia card every year if you want to keep playing the latest AAA slop as soon as it's released.
Then again, if that's what he meant, he's naive as hell if he thinks he'll keep getting games for a PS5 in 10 years.

2 less cores of the same gen zen and a weaker gpu.
The problem with 10 series gpus is lack of support for many new technologies. Compared to a lower model of newer series in some games it's about the same while in others it gives half the performance.

        Anonymous

        >2 less cores
The consoles have a frequency limit, and can not use all cores for a game. It's comparable
        >weaker GPU
Throw out rat-racing as the 6600 in the PS5 basically cannot actually do it, apply rescaling on a 1070Ti as the consoles already use, and it's comparable.
I kept this within a $500-ish budget. It's technically correct.

And aside from direct GAMES comparisons, the PC is a full fledged PC.

    >Be factory owner
    >Make the PC the same way a million times
    >Find ways to reduce cost of making that PC
    Versus
    >Be dude who doesn't want that PC
    >Wants different features, more or less power, etc
Consoles versus PC in a nutshell. A console is just a PC with its balls cut off, replicated a bajllion times.

this is so dumb. if they're different platforms with different uses, why would you expect to be able to make them "equivalent" for the same price? they're comparing apples to oranges. its flawed from the beginning

The problem with building a "PS5 killer" is that while the current gen consoles have midrange specs in some regards, they also have more than 6 cores accessible to games, a 256-bit memory bus, and games can usually use 12-14 GB of memory as VRAM. These are high end features that could easily push your build up into $800+ territory.

There's a pretty nasty performance penalty for using GPU memory as system RAM though. This actually makes it harder to optimize games for consoles compared to a PC with a dedicated graphics card.
