The default linux mint is ubuntu based.
You gotta get LMDE for their Debian edition.

They should drop the Ubuntu base version all together unironically. Just use flatpaks to get goyslop apps.

It used to have a KDE Edition. I stopped using it when they dropped support for KDE.

Here's a screencap from back in 2016 when I was using it. Sorry for having to redact stuff. God software was sovl back then...

What do you use now? I'm on Debian but it's really not as polished as Mint

Debian. Although if you want something that "just works" I highly recommend Nobara, a fedora derivative for gaming. I dual boot it for a few games that won't run on Debian because the graphics driver is too old.

I use debian for everything except those games and Davinci though. Debian is just so stable and comfy.

Oh, right, the graphics issue is a pretty big one. Mesa 23 for example has serious performance improvements, but Debian 12 doesn't backport it. Things like this is why I'd prefer a more up to date distribution.
Already tried most of them though. OpenSUSE just had too small of a repository (some native games didn't have needed packages) and having to trust Packman is not really what I want to do.
I don't have the time or patience to maintain Arch Linux.
Kubuntu would be fine, if not for the Snaps that they try to force on you.
Mint has most of what I need, except it doesn't have KDE. I did try to install KDE on a Mint install a long time ago, but the experience wasn't very good.

What particularly about debian are you finding less polished?

Well, it's not fundamentally different, but it takes a while for me to set up Debian the way I want it. GRUB doesn't use Plymouth, for example. It's those kinds of things. Tried Debian Sid today, but couldn't even upgrade properly (dependency issues) and I had a feeling Sid would be a pain to maintain as well.

I remember this version. It was shit. Plasma 5 was still Krash City in 2016 and it was just the stock Kubuntu configuration with a Linux Mint wallpaper. It was pretty obvious Clem & Co. had already given up on KDE at this point.
Now back when they were still using Plasma 4.... VGH!
      It's been downhill ever since.

They get a lot of donations from a lot of people already, I think it'd just have to be a vocal, popular push.

It will never happen. Mint's devs dropped the KDE edition because KDE was (and still is) moving at a different pace than Linux Mint and because being based on QT it couldn't take advantage of native Mint tools in the same way that DEs made with GTK can.

Just like, rewrite the tools in Qt. Or don't, they'll run anyway so what's the difference?
        >KDE was (and still is) moving at a different pace than Linux Mint
I genuinely don't know what this actually means.

My total newbie experience : I'm switching from Win7 to Linux. After trying a dozen distribs in VM, Mint XFCE was my favorite, and I felt at home with it. But once installed it kept crashing because of Nvidia drivers... so I installed Peppermint Classic instead, which doesn't crash, they're very close though it's based on Debian instead of Ubuntu.

I switched to Mint a few days ago, and I couldn't even figure out how to install Nvidia drivers in the first place. I just went with an open-source on instead.

I want to like KDE, but everytime I use it there's always something that bugs me. Taskbar date/time being wonky, not being able to resize windows properly, it crashing from time to time, among others.

Have you tried using the EDGE ISO? Debian+XFCE worked the best for me when I still a NVIDIA card

regular mint is uc**tu-based and lmde is lesbian-based, what do you not get?

They have the same differences as Ubuntu and Debian have.
      >different installers
      >no PPA in LMDE because that's an Ubuntu thing
      >different repos for non-mint software
      >no firmware updater app in LMDE
      >regular mint has the little usability tweaks of Ubuntu
Etc. LMDE is Debian with Linux Mint's exclusive apps and settings on top, similarly to how regular Mint is Ubuntu with Linux Mint's exclusive apps and settings on top.

I like mint but I can't decide which window manager I should use. I installed the gnome one on my beefy puter for now and used the slimmer versions in the past but didn't really notice a significant difference. I usually use the terminal so the type of window manager doesn't really matter much I suppose.

I'd just use XFCE if i were to want to swap the window manager.

What's going on with the linux mint shilling? Are you just one guy? Either way it's working

How easy it is to run games on mint out of the box? Including non-steam games with proton or whatever.

I like the debian based systems but debian is too stable, ubuntu too bloated and mint is just right (for being productive).
I use my ipad for media consumption due to the better display and overall better performance. I had some graphical issues with playing videos with Mint that are tolerable but a bit annoying and I'm too lazy to figure it out by myself. For gaming I use my Windows gaming rig. It's kind of a potatoe (gtx1070) but I only game in 1080p so I don't update until something vital dies.

all my work colleagues have since upgraded at least twice to some RTX monster but I don't game that much anymore so I rather spend my money elsewhere. It's a relative potato, not an absolute potato.
