It was promoted by proto-redditors and unelected glowies. Orwell was always here. Before redditor was, Orwell waited for him. The ultimate hack awaiting his ultimate midwit reader.
Anyway, Asimov obliterated Orwell from orbit.

Proto-redditors, in 1949? You need to cool off homo. Your schizo breakdown is embarrassing to everyone.

fricking hell imagine spending so much time on this godforsaken website that you use this term with complete seriousness.

I'm sorry but if you can't acknowledge someone like Woodrow Wilson as a proto-redditor you're just being intellectually dishonest.

I mean, they're all pretty good books. I don't know too much about the guy but they definitely match his sadboy, hair-in-the-face, cigarette-skinny, pompous autodidact, wistful twink aesthetic as far as I've seen it. Putting these out there as your recommended reading does sort of have a mildly conceited, overly self-concerned taste to it because the list carries such an edgy energy as a whole. It's also a lot of high school curriculum tier novels, these are definitely books I would have walked around carrying and talking about a bit too loudly when I was 15 in order to impress quiet girls and "cool" teachers. All things considered, if he's actually read and appreciated all of these that's pretty cool, and my top 12 book list probably wouldn't look any less obnoxious.

What would your top 12 book recommendations be, if you were an actor with countless thirsty artistic sadgirl fans desperately wanting to project something special onto you in order to build up the hopes of discovering something special within themselves? I feel like this shows he knows his target audience, and it probably isn't you.

I would maybe not overload on the Dostoyevsky. I would put In Search of Lost Time, something by a female author like Virginia Woolf or George Eliot. Also put one Kafka in there.
An instantly better list for his persona and fans.
