right now I'm waiting for the Xwayland issues to be fixed because wayland offers a better desktop experience due to being able to map mouse buttons. No issues, I do have problems with crashes if I constantly sleep and awake the computer over the course of 2-3 days. But other than that no problems, all of my functions work on my leigon and it's easy to switch power profiles.

Almost as flexible as Xfce, but with far more sleek and cohesive UX. Reasonable resource usage, and lots of really nice little touches. Nemo is comfy too, and has a good set of plugins available for it. Only thing that bothers me is that there's no option for panels to dynamically resize. Aside from that, it's the comfiest DE I've used, with Xfce and Budgie tied for a close second.

I was using KDE Plasma on FreeBSD for a while. It worked great. Then I updated it, and it made my computer restart after a few minutes of use. In the console, before KDE starts it was fine. I tried Plasma 6 and went back to 5, reinstalled FreeBSD fresh. Nothing helped.

      Krash meme is fricking real.

I went back to using awesome wm. It just works. And since I've been using it for so long (since 2006), the shortcuts have become second nature so using it and manipulating windows is really fast.

it feels like kde hasn't been stable/usable since kde3 or the very last coupel of kde4 releases (which distros immediately dropped upon upstream release of kde5)

    Gnome 46
8/10, it feels way better than windows or macos, my workflow is very simmilar to tiling wms, but I got very polished desktop with cool af touchpad gestures which "just werks". I'd like to try paperwm to have tiling outside of tmux terminals.

But some things are really annoying, like blury xwayland apps if you use scaling, none of rdp apps look smooth with scaling enabled. And also most gnome/gtk apps are very limited - you can use them for most basic things, and they are fine if you will use them once or twice, but if you need them regularly, you'd probably switch to more feature rich qt app

Question. I've never looked into or explored the idea, but why aren't animated backgrounds a thing and/or popular?

      Anonymous

They do exist. They are pretty easy to get on Enlightenment, KDE, and even Windows.
The reason they aren't popular is that they take a lot of resources and space compared to static ones. Also, there are more static wallpapers than animated ones, so it's easier to get a cool one that way. Also, static wallpapers have been around for a long time, so people are just used to them and many have no reasons to try animated ones

        Anonymous

I kind of just want a big background with tiny subtle animations going on in the background.

Haven't had a real krash in years. Absolutely everything is easily configurable in GUIs and you can even download from Pling. A bit bloated though. I don't understand how the tiling works.
