Remind me again why consoles are still a thing? They are literally rebadged AMD PCs. PlayStation 5 graphics card (GPU) is equivalent to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 and the Radeon RX 5700 XT.

As soon as Sony adopted the x86 platform, it was over. Mark Cerny did 15 presentations convincing Sony to use x86 for PS4. PS4 in particular is just BSD on AMD64, its fricking piss easy to write and optimize code for. PS4/PS5 are essentially x86 amd pcs running a OpenGL/Vulcan compatible GPU on top of a BSD based OS. couple that with numerous games using ue4x and its pretty easy and economical to put games on more machines.

Which is doubly illogical. PCs are more affordable than consoles (if you have a clue when you build it), and are better for kids to learn stuff other than playing games.

        >PCs are more affordable than consoles (if you have a clue when you build it)
this is just wrong, it's been like 4 years and it still costs more than 500 dollars to build a PC that plays games better than the consoles
and ftr I have a gaming PC that I built right before the consoles came out that trounces both of them, but it cost 1900

Eh, that's not really a fair comparison, a 7900 XT or 4080 by themselves is much more expensive than a PS5, much less the rest of the computer. And sure, while console companies will nickle & dime their players more over time, lower initial price will always be appealing to the portion of the market that can't think ahead, which is sadly a very large portion.

I play everything else on my PS4 PRO and and I will get the PS5 PRO. I do illustration, 3D modeling and rendering, video editing, and I play with AIs. I just like the simplicity of consoles, I don't want to bother with any settings or troubleshooting; I already do that every now an then with the programs on my PC. No bothering to see how compatible is "X" game with my controller, not bothering to see what settings are the best for my system, I just put the disc and I play (leaving aside updates and else) The PS4 PRO still looks amazing to my in a 65" QLED with HDR.

not really. "consoles" are great for compartmentalization.
some people like to use macbook for their work like doc/photo/video/editing/daw-music and then game on another entirely different device.
it's some kind of zen-ism, "one thing does one job" not "one thing does it all" which wingay mindset have. the issue though is consoles are cringe since they're locked down system and ecosystem and you cannot repurpose the device THOUGH biggest advantage is the generation of device and games just werk unlike having to tinker just to make a game work since you didn't have that vcredist++ shit and you can only make old shit work by installing visual studio pro lol.
it also depends since most gayming shit aren't even for children, you know your mother won't let you play the PS since you need to do your home work as a child and even worse is poor countries, you think a poor family will let their kids use the console? no. I think consoles are made for manchildren there's a whole lot of market for that shit, even the popular phone games (korean and japanese) are built for manchildren. though you should ask is it "bad to do your thing?" I think not. if you're having fun then it is good.

because originally when you bought a console, developer had the confidence that it'll the run the same on every consumer unit, and people buying a console were further reassured that that they will same experience as their peers?
but the point is moot nowadays since both PS and Xbox have base and "pro" versions, so devs have to cater to lowest common denominator

The biggest issue with this is the fact you're restricted to used parts. I live in a country with strong consumer laws which makes buying New far more attractive than used, and you're average joe looks at "$800 singular device with 2 year guarantee" more positively than "$700-900 cobbled together device with unknown history and no warranty whatsoever".

A large portion of the population gets confused by some very basic things. The console market is targeted at those "people"; remember that a major reason that the Wii U failed is simply because console buyers got confused and though it was a Wii accessory. Hell, I am pretty sure one of the reasons the Playstation series of consoles has done so much better than the Xbox is simply that Sony has kept their naming scheme simple; even console users can understand sequential numbers, with the occasional descriptive word attached (PS2 slim, PS4 Pro) , while Microsoft's naming scheme has been moronic for years.

Asking those people to understand how to pick out PC parts and assemble them is simply too much. And the prebuilt market is both more expensive, and also confusing, with lots of poorly configured machines out there.

nowadays it's just a convenience thing
it's a lot easier for someone who isn't familiar with technology to buy a console and start playing games on their tv quickly than it is for them buy a prebuilt gaming pc and fiddle around installing stuff and setting up a controller, and hooking it up to the tv means they can't really use it as a pc as well
    basically, it's for casual/party gaming
early on you did get much more for your money, like for example good luck trying to make a PC in 1996 for $299 at all, let alone one that could run tomb raider as well as a PSX
sure, a pc with a 3dfx voodoo could run it with much nicer graphics, but you'd be paying a pretty penny for that privilege

Few corrections are needed. The PS5 uses it's own rendering API which is heavily based on Vulkan, Xbox uses DirectX however. The RX 5700 isn't a far comparison as it doesn't support RT and isn't the same architecture, a more apt comparison is the RX 6600 (non XT) to my knowledge. Also it is true that the PlayStation consoles run a modified FreeBSD named OrbisOS little is retained from FreeBSD almost everything is changed, it can't really be called FreeBSD anymore but it definitely is Unix somewhat, and they don't have to give their code back to the FreeBSD project because of the utterly moronic BSD license either so FreeBSD doesn't benefit whatsoever.

Slightly more opinionated, but the only reason they exist is price and the little exclusively they still have. They can offset the cost because they are a platform owner and make money off cuts from games and subscription. But I think the rude awaking will be when Valve does the same thing, they are just starting with handhelds as it's less saturated perhaps especially on the high end, eventually they will probably launch a full console and it will be good for the whole industry in my opinion since it's open unlike normal consoles.

consumers aren't entirely rational. microsoft was incredibly aggressive with gamepass pricing, they deliberately crafted gold/core conversion loopholes that gave/give you 3/2 years of ultimate for $150 to pump their subscriber numbers, which is ridiculously good value, but consumers still chose playstation.
this will continue when valve releases their steam machine 2.0, even when it's clearly the best choice.

as for why people prefer consoles to pc that's very obvious, it's not just price, people just don't want to deal with windows in their living rooms.

It had its place back in the 90s and 00s but there's less reason to just hook up a controller to a PC and connect it to your TV nowadays. Consoles only live off of lazy people who are afraid of PC cases.
