SerenityOS pronounced dead

Just in: Andreas resigns from Serenity, now completely separate from Ladybird browser.
What started as a /dpt/ project now lies in shambles. It's dead, Jim.

            Anonymous

Why would there be drama? Realistically, a competing web browser is possible, an operating system is not. Long term, while having an OS that you wrote from scratch that does what you like subjectively, won't really get you anywhere on the level of the big 3, it's more of a toy project, regardless of how sophisticated it is. On the other hand, a web browser is possible, considering how many featureful their JS engine and other stuff is, how many competent contributors there are, and people working full time of it, while getting funding from third parties.
Yes, a web browser is a big task too, but if you don't have decades worth of hardware support and drivers and stuff, your OS won't really get anywhere.

He is not against patches to maintain serenityOS compatibility but he will switch to more common OSS libraries so it would be better off for the serenityOS project to think of the browser as a port.

Well let's see how far he goes with it.
If you took this to extreme logical conclusion, every part of Ladybird has already been done better somewhere else.

          Anonymous

          depends on the library.
For example sometimes its better to use common libraries chrome and firefox use for images instead of building your own.
It's actually likely they don't use their own libraries for some stuff either
I think for example both chromium and firefox use gzip.

I support Ladybird becoming the main project. KDE discontinued KHTML and Moonchild admits he uses Edge now and just keeps Pale Moon as a hobby. Having just one non Google-funded competitor (Apple and Mozilla get billions for Google to be the default search engine) out there is enough to keep the Manifestv3 shills at bay.

The original reason for Ladybird (originally Browser) to exist is because SerenityOS needed a browser. Now, it has been removed as a build target for the project. The goalposts will shift yet again, and in 3 years time it will be all "yadda yadda times change what's the big deal if we accept funding from google yadda yadda"

i think andreas should consider having it in writing that ladybird will remain truly independent as browser (for some definition of "independent"). that would be a good gesture towards current and future contributors. i dont think people are interested in building a browser that will end up being another google puppet and it's a legitimate worry to have that you might be contributing to one.

that he wouldn't sell out to Google. Dude quit being a software engineer to work on an open source passion project full time which at the time wasn't very well known. Literally living off what he had saved up and the donations he has recieved which wasn't much towards the start. Kling is pretty based and principled and not driven by money. It seems he felt that SerenityOS already reached many of his goals and could be left to other people. Ladybird was quite literally the most noteworthy thing about Serenity. Past a certain point it was the main thing being worked on (at times the ONLY thing being developed) and attracted wealthy sponsors. Ladybird will still be on Serenity. It's just a fork so I'd imagine that some in the Serenity community will maintain it and every once in a while port stuff in from Kling's project.

SerenityOS and Ladybird are super popular projects for programmers to talk about. People on IQfy love it, people on reddit and hackernews love it. People on YouTube praise it.

The reality is that they have zero users because what they produce is ultimately not very useful. Don't get me wrong, it's cool, but cool in the way someone fixes their own car. Which is something, but in the end it does not matter.

Looks like he realized that making a decent web browser from scratch that keeps up with modern internet and web standards is just as difficult as being an OSdev. Ladybird, libweb, and libjs drew in lots of attention so he decided to only focus on one and leave the rest to the community. Hopefully Serenity doesn't get infested with trannies. Kling has been pretty good at swatting away troons trying to shove the troony CoC(k) aka Contributor's Covenant into the project. Sort of wanted to see an osdev complete a usable OS that isn't Linux, BSD, or Haiku. Most the other ones like Toaru, TempleOS, and Ares either aren't anywhere near their project goals in their roadmap. Aside from ladybird, Serenity felt pretty close outside of not having an iso.
