Difficult to say. I had a pristine T420 that I basically never used. Two months ago I sold it and bought an x220, and I use it all the time. Form factor is generally a matter of taste, but I found that the X220 is the ideal laptop in terms of having a being compact but having a normal sized keyboard.

That being said, I like the keyboard but I'm not sure it really makes up for the ancient cpu. I mean I can play 720p60fps videos and with TLP configured properly I'm able to keep it below 50c for most of the things I do (reading/writing/shitposting), but you really notice the limits in terms of how low you have to go to keep it cool. Thanks to https://github.com/vmatare/thinkfan I am pretty happy with where I have it right now (pretty much inaudible 90% of the time). Still, the battery life is atrocious (partly linux's fault, partly the inefficient cpu), and it's generally more tedious than a truly modern laptop (where you can just unplug and watch 1080p60fps videos for hours and hours).

I hear that the x230 is a big step up in terms of cpu, so you might consider just getting one of those and swapping out the keyboard. I'm actually considering swapping the motherboard in my x220 to and x230 mobo (which is surprisingly cheap).

*20 series is a meme, the keyboard is slightly superior but it's not worth it for such an old piece of shit. *70 series is the best value for money right now. You get a shitload of power, much much better ACPI and battery life. $70 on average is a massive leap up from $60 you would get for a *20. Another $10 will get you an *80 with touch screens and USB-C which is superior because you can find chargers for it at a gas station, only thing about USB-C is that the port itself is weak but if you take care of it you will be fine. Going *90 jumps you up another $60 for just slightly more power and is not worth it.

My advice is that both are too old to be able to actually carry around or do any work on, so skip both.
If for some reason you still want one, go with the t420 for the larger screen and potential for a CPU upgrade.

t430 with fhd ips mod and quad core cpu. keyboard swap is optional

  18. 4 weeks ago
    Anonymous

If you're going to get a stinkpad,
I recommend the X230 i7 with 16 GB of RAM

You can mod the X220's keyboard into the X230

The X230 i7 is slightly more usable than the X220, it has USB3, slightly faster cpu, etc.

The hardware is still super old though - this shouldn't be a main laptop
It should be used for simple web browsing, very light programming or SSHing into a more powerful computer
Because of it's aging batteries, it really isn't viable as a reliable portable machine

Sadly, I use my M1 macbook pro more than my Thinkpad & there's really no modern alternative with the easy hardware modability & repairability like an old thinkpad

Neither. If you're dead set on getting an old Thinkpad, get a T480s. All T480s's come with a better heatsink than the T480, which has throttling issues.
    >Muh hot swappable battery
You can use a USB-C power bank as a battery. It'll last just as long and be cheaper than an official battery, and less dangerous than an offbrand chink one.
    >Muh Ram
Get a model with 16Gb of the soldered ram, and you can add another 16 gigs in the open slot. I don't know why you need 32 on a machine this old, but you do you.

For a more modern machine, go for a T14, at least gen 2. I think the AMD models have a better battery life than the Intel models. It's basically this "generations" T480, like how the T480 was its "generations" T420.

I love my X230 laptops (my main one is a X230 Tablet) but the hardware does feel dated in 2024. Proper support of Ivy Bridge (as a CPU and as a iGPU) is slowly starting to wane, will never get full Wayland support, and although this won't make me throw the laptop away, I certainly wouldn't recommend buying a 12 year old CPU unless you have a very good reason to. This would be like buying a Pentium 3 back when Ivy Bridge was current. Just don't.

By 2024 an used 12 year old thinkpad should be considered more of an educational hobby, it will only bring you annoyance if you try to daily drive it.

I bought a X220 for myself and it's a fun activity to learn its upgrades.

I have corebooted it, maxxed out its RAM (16GB), installed an 1TB SSD to its mSATA slot, and the next upgrade I'm thinking is the screen.

I have also bought an USBC to DC 7.9 x 5.5mm jack to use it with a slim 65W font instead of that bulky stock one.

That being said, It has a poor speaker, poor screen brightness and poor battery life, compared to a macbook air m1, for example

But it's fun. It runs debian 12 with MATE desktop.

Shit came in pristine condition, only issue is small sticker discoloring on the lid. I had a T400 in the past, having the old keyboard isn't worth the old hardware.

NTA but a used T480 in acceptable condition is at least 250 bucks here

Depressing. I guess a T430 with a keyboard and i7 quadcore swap, if you want a poverty pad.

that's Europe for you (well, for me in this case)

Neither, get a T520 if you're going to get a *20 series Thinkpad. In my opinion, you should honestly get something more recent, though. I feel like my T520 is starting to show its age (and it's the highest specced variant).

X270. USB-C, endless 1080p ips displays, modern cpu and decent igpu, can take 2 nvme ssds (1x 2280, 1x 2242), better battery life.

    I've been happy with the x280 I got for $150 (i7/16G/512G), added a second 512G SSD in the extra M.2 2230 slot.
I used to use a librebooted x200 but I don't really care anymore, the machine is just too slow for the work I do these days.

The x220 is significantly weaker than the x230. If you need the x220 keyboard, it's an easy swap.

I used an x220 with 8gb ram in college with a minimal WM and it was a pain in the dick to use in several circumstances
    >opening more than three browser tabs
    >using kicad at all. Just loading the symbol library was an undertaking
    >God forbid using an IDE, you better be down with vim/emacs for everything
    >same with running Zoom or even Discord for calls
I loved the small form factor and low weight though. It's pretty great if you just use it as a reader and code machine.

I was using a X61T with 4 GB RAM in college, it was just fine. Firefox could easily handle multiple tabs. The C2D could even handle Gentoo. Of course we didn't use Zoom or Discord, just Jabber.

t400 or x200s. Last real thinkpads. unironically. I mean, if you are going that far back you might as well do it right. do not go for a x201. That's visually the same as an x200, but it will heat your whole fricking house.
Also do not go for a t410, because it is already worse in many regards.

disassembling T420 is a pain in the ass, if you don't plan to replace some internal parts go for it, otherwise X220

t510/t520/t530 is absolute delight to disassemble into pieces and put back together, only the 400/410etc series is pain

        >disassembly
has never been a problem on non glued together nupads

what actually is worse on t410
        >some status LEDs missing already
        >no dedicated mic input
        >shell is worse and already has nupad vibes
        >keyboard - yes, the keyboard on x220 and t410/420 is WORSE than non core duo model keyboards

If you choose between those, then T420. I have both, X220 size isn't considered ultra-portable today and its size doesn't do any favors in cooling. Too few USB ports.
    >recommend me another one
T490. Just look at them offers on ebay. NOT the s submodel.

x220 can put in pci-express card with two aditional usb ports (maybe even three) and they will be usb 3.0 because no usb 2 was ever made for express cards

I tried that with T420, is was bad. Low transfer speed and the card got stuck inside. It does offer two more USB2-ish ports w/30-40MB/s transfer rate.

Splurge out more money, anything below the 8th generation (aside from the P50/P51) ain't worth it anymore.

Currently, the best ThinkPads, in my opinion:
1: T440p (GOAT, last real ThinkPad)
2: T480 (close to GOAT, battery is nice, 2 ram slots for up to 64GB, almost as sturdy as T440p, 2 SSD slots, real RJ45 port)
3: T480s (faster SSD, but only 1, get at least 8GB RAM soldered, finicky RJ45)

    Honorable mentions:
X1C gen 7 or 8, I use one rn as it is my old work laptop I could keep, nice laptop with 10th gen Intel, but not recommended as the only redeeming factor is weight it has less sustained performance than a decent T440p.
T14s gen 2 or gen 3 are nice as well, the performance is surprisingly good, especially the gen 3 with alder lake, but having e cores can cause problems, using 11th gen or AMD can have benefits, the T14s gen 2 has a surprising survivability.

      >T480s faster SSD, but only 1
Wrong, the 2242 slot accepts SSDs
