I miss when he would go over specific synthesis mechanisms. The videos he produces now are entertaining in their own right (albeit they are more appealing to a broader audience) but there was something special about high production organic synthesis videos

He got followers by doing actual home science, then decided he wanted to be a youtuber, rather than a home scientist who happens to post to youtube.
He tries to be funny and do unique stuff instead of trying to do science and letting the humour come naturally. He's a better science communicator than comedian.

His early stuff was good material. Methodical, technical, on point, kino filming. Now it's just fluff.

Agreed. His videos from 4+ years ago really captured the magic of organic synthesis. I once binged all his content back in the day. Nothing especially advanced, but I did learn a practical thing or two here and there about lab technique that you don't get by simply reading about the reaction mechanisms. Now there's too much fluff and I'm less enthused.

He's a victim of google's shitty platform politics more than anything, like many many other channels.

You basically *have* to cuck to their agenda and monetize the shit out of your channel if you want it to be successful/not get supressed by the algorithm or outright banned (goolag has their algos listening to every single word spoken by uploaders, and they actively collect material to shitcan a content creator for if goolag so choses).

The age of small-scale passionate youtube channels is almost over. SteveMRE is one of the last holdouts, along with a handful of others. We can thank normies/soiphones flooding these tubes for all this of course

        what happened?

NileRed makes decent videos in my opinion. The projects aren't usually super complicated or bleeding edge research, but then that's an unrealistic expectation. They're entertaining to watch though, which is a really difficult thing to achieve for an hour long video. It's clearly meant to be science entertainment rather than science education.

He's not a top level chemist, and there's already a bunch of those on youtube, so there's no sense in him trying to wow anyone with a super-efficient synthesis of a novel research chemical or whatever. Similarly, step-by-step detailed synthesis reaction schemes will probably be better explained by others but more importantly skipped over by 99% of people watching.

For what it's worth, there's still a bunch of passionate individual applied science channels on YouTube who don't pander to advertisers. Unsurprisingly, it's pretty hard to stumble upon them unless you specifically look for content related to their output. And since most of these guys don't make enough money off YouTube to do it full-time, their output is way lower.

I think he is good at what he does. I just don't like the direction he's taking. He doesn't produce as much methodical experimental content like he used to. That's the issue. But his channel, his circus.
