The self-contemplation, creative/organizing principle (logos), and love of God are reflected in His conscious creations and the manner in which He relates to the world is reflected in the manner in which man relates to the world.

I think it can be taken to mean God created man in the way He imagined, instead of in His likelihood. I'm not sure why it's often interpreted as the latter.

I'm gay and he does look too much like a Final Fantasy character, but I would be lying to say he is unattractive. Definitely more attractive than the guy on the right.

The earth is a flawed reflection of the heavens and humans are flawed reflections of the highest power in the heavens. Roughly something like this worldview was the consensus among thinking people for documented history pretty much globally and maybe as far back as 12k years.
The highest power in the heavens was usually Jupiter but as people moved more towards monotheistic thinking the sun became more popular. It represents an outside force not a kind of actor on a stage like Jupiter.

    >As was said then at the beginning, when God found these things without order either in the relation of each thing to itself or of one to another, he introduced proportion among them, in as many kinds and ways as it was possible for them to be proportionate and harmonious. For at that time neither had they any proportion, except by mere chance, nor did any of the bodies that now are named by us deserve the name, such as fire and water and the other elements: but first he ordered all these, and then out of them wrought this universe, a single living creature containing within itself all living creatures, mortal and immortal, that exist. And of the divine he himself was the creator; but the creation of mortals he delivered over to his own children to work out. And they, in imitation of him, having received from him the immortal principle of soul, fashioned round about her a mortal body and gave her all the body to ride in; and beside her they built in another kind of soul, even that which is mortal, having within itself dread and inevitable passions-first pleasure, the strongest allurement of evil, next pains, that scare good things away; confidence moreover and fear, a yoke of thoughtless counsellors; wrath hard to assuage and hope that lightly leads astray; and having mingled all these perforce with reasonless sensation and love that ventures all things, so they fashioned the mortal soul.

In the ancient world the ancients believed the idols in their temples were literally manifested personifications of their gods. The writers of Genesis 1 & 2 reflected this by putting Yahweh's "idols" (man) in His temple (the Garden of Eden). It's meant to symbolize and recontexualize pagan myths. We are the Lord's little idols running around here in His temple. That's what "made in the image of God" means.

Man is a free moral agent, it's why you'll have to give an account for every idle word and deed done in darkness.

So many replies, so many sodomites just want to lust after the effeminate guy in the picture, so little discussion. You guys can't even think past your lusts and temptations and genitals, it's really pathetic.

    >Since, as Damascene states (De Fide Orthod. ii, 12), man is said to be made in God’s image, insofar as the image implies an intelligent being endowed with free-will and self-movement: now that we have treated of the exemplar, i.e., God, and of those things which came forth from the power of God in accordance with His will; it remains for us to treat of His image, i.e., man, inasmuch as he too is the principle of his actions, as having free-will and control of his actions.

I suppose it means that men created God and attributed their own image to him.
Men have been committing this fallacy since ancient times. Xenophanes has criticised it in this fragment:
    >But mortals suppose that gods are born,
wear their own clothes and have a voice and body. Ethiopians say that their gods are snub-nosed and black; Thracians that theirs are blue-eyed and red-haired.
But if horses or oxen or lions had hands
or could draw with their hands and accomplish such works as men, horses would draw the figures of the gods as similar to horses, and the oxen as similar to oxen, and they would make the bodies of the sort which each of them had."
