I'm a software engineer, I currently work 100% from home, I'm not looking for a job but I still have HR ladies messaging me at least once a couple times per week offering me jobs in my field.

From what I've seen, this -50% is mostly just useless people being filtered out, because AI made it obvious how useless they are. People who actually write code are basically unaffected. It's just a bunch of dead weights who did nothing but drink coffee and talk on their phone all day who get phased out. I'm glad that's the case.

Big corporations such as google and other from the gang had overhired and used to pay hige salaries for well educated people who did nothing at all.
VMWare here was one such example. Salaries well above the average. Suddenly taken over by broadcom and massive reduction of personnel.

Nobody can rely on a company keeping them until retirement these days, the illusion of a "career" is still dangled though. But it's subject to the whims of the economy, if suddenly 50% of the computer jobs disappear, then 50% of computer careers end as well. Barring people who make a side gig work out or go into business for themselves, they leave the industry and thus their career becomes moribund and ends.

            Anonymous

Googling takes much longer and google's search results continuously get worse.

Chatgpt on the other hand gives you a list of possible causes, can expand on topics you need clarification on, tells you whatever you need to know about particular drugs and side effects, what typical prognosis etc. is

Last time I used it I was having weird soreness and chest pain, chatgpt suggested costochondoritis after I told it the symptoms. Told me it was basically harmless and I could get medicine to help with the inflammation and pain. So that's what I did - phoned up GP, did the rigamarole, he types my symptoms into the computer and goes, "well anon it's probably costochondoritis, it's nothing to worry about, I can write a prescription for diclofenac (or w/e something like that), I said sure, used the stuff, pain went away.

At this point my line of getting medical help is:
            Chatgpt
Google to doublecheck and confirm chatgpt
            Actual doctor
            prescription

chatgpt also helpfully informed me that the drug I got might rarely cause or is implicated in causing heart failure (apparently with prolonged usage and mostly older patients), which my GP and the pharmacist didn't tell me.

Admin only enable this bullshit by refusing to expel anyone since funding is tied to attendance. When you show kids -- who're always gonna test boundaries and limits -- that they can get away with anything, the end result is a disaster. Speaking as someone who's done it 10 years and is planning an exit, I would've advise OP -- or anyone -- to get into teaching right now. The inmates run the asylum in most of these places and in the BEST case scenario you'll end up at a rich school full of snooty rich kids who frick with your livelihood for fun. Worst case scenario, you end up in a Title 1 school and get actually stabbed. And a big part of you will want to give up, but you'll have like a handful of kids who're actually there to learn and do their best, so you'll want to try for them and you'll burn out and hate every day. This "career" is a joke. It doesn't matter where you go. People who don't even do this shit for a living will tell you "just don't teach in the hood" like that fixes the underlying problems prevalent in this dogshit field. Don't fricking do it, OP. And I was never a "company man", I balanced every aspect of work ethic with respect for worker's rights. That, I believe, was considered one of the worst things about me by management. I live in a premium vacation area and we have two Michelin starred chefs in the area, one in a casino, another in a high end fine dining place serving new cuisine. It's cool, I can eat stuff basically taken from El Bulli but I know both these chefs (it's a smaller area and locals all know each other) and they both feel limited by what they can sell to the largely geriatric patronage. The guy who works in a restaurant, it's owned by a clique of local doctors so they have a fine dining place to eat at, it's essentially subsidized by them lol. I drop in for happy hour mostly, same menu but for $5-10 a plate.

People over complicate it. The most important things are location and product. But, people seem to mess them both up.

Location, it has to be high traffic, of course. But, you need to own the space. If you don't physically own the location of your bar or restaurant, you really don't have anything. You can build a reputation at a place then have it snatched from under you, if you don't own. Owning the location is the source of your wealth as a restaurant owner.

Product, people tend to over complicate this a lot. You don't need fifty items on your menu. Pick three things and make them the absolute best you can. Do those three things perfect. That way you can focus on your quality. And, it saves on waste. People will get a quality product everytime, and constancy is the key to making people like your place.

It's not rocket science. It's a simple business but people tend to mess it up.

Couldn't I do it cheaper if I order it frozen off of Sysco and microwave it? But charge just as much as the quality version? I feel like you're not MBAing this nearly enough.

The only places that can get away with serving Sysco shit are
            >Sports bars
            >Tourist traps
            >Mom & pop fast food joints/chippers
Even then they usually need to have at least one thing on the menu that's fresh/prepped in-house like a hyped burger or buttermilk fried chicken.

Lol, I hate that fricking company like you wouldn't believe. You can't do that if you want to build something that lasts. But, that's been the norm for every restaurant for decades now. They go to the food shows, and they try to see what's the new cheapest frozen fad. They consider things like freezer space and shelf life over quality. Quality was taken a backseat to everything in the food business. It's all how much slop can I warehouse, reheat, and sell for the most profit. Red Lobster was just the beginning. These other restaurants who don't operate off of quality (basically none of the chains) are about to get fricked.

No, the prices are stuck. Although I believe some of the price increase was to cover for lost traffic.

But, I expect more reasonable businesses models to come along where you get more value for your money. The large sit down chains are dying. The way restaurants operate is changing. The customers have changed and what they want. Prices will not be coming down, but I expect quality to rise. If you're in this business and you aren't making the best product you can, you're about to be out of business. I think.

          >the most ungrateful customers
It's difficult to be grateful. I can't go out for fast food with my family and have it cost less than $50. If we want to eat non-slop with table service, it's $100. And it all comes off the back of the same truck anyway. The ingredients are shit, they literally look for the cheapest, most generic stuff they can find, they skimp on the good stuff and hell, now days they even skimp on the filler. PIzza Hut shit now looks like Cici's used to, Cici's looks like Tostino frozen pizzas that they somehow shaved one in half the long way to make 5. And you can't fix this by going to non-chain places... they just look more wienerroachy and still do all the same dirty tricks. I'm not just imagining it. It's really worse than it was 15 years ago, 10 years ago. And the service is no better. The people serving my table hate me, and you can see it in their face, hear it in their voice. I don't know if they've worked all day with no tips or what, but I've never left without putting a $20 under a plate... and now I feel like I don't want to.

Give me something to fricking be grateful for.

Everything this anon said is true, spot on. The restaurant industry is so far off today it's unreal. They waste people's money and time. They have cut every corner they could, except for the one's they should have. Stop the useless kiss assing, and stop wasting people's time. Full service is dead. You need a place for people to sit and eat, but they don't need to have Steve or Kayla the server coming to the table every five minutes or not at all then expecting this guy to leave $20 for them.

The boomers are gone. They wanted a dining "experience" they wanted someone to kiss their ass and feel like they were having fun. They didn't care if the food sucked. They were going for an experience.

Millennials don't want that. They want food because of convenience not some experience. Just give them food, don't be rude and grunt at them, don't make them wait all day, and make the food good.

This is a good thing the food service industry is going back to it's roots. Make good food without a hassle to the customer and that's it. The restaurant purge is over currently happening. Rip Red Lobster.

The more feasible answer is to find something in demand and specialize in it. Most businesses fail. You probably won't even get yours off the ground in this economy. You say you want to sell soap. To whom? And why would they buy yours, when they could get it cheaper at walmart, or remotely via amazon?

It is failure mentality, and anyone can start a business. You make the joke about picking up shells on the beach. I know people who sell seashells. You're either too good to do something or you're to afraid to do something. Anyone can start a business. Doesn't mean you're going to start a multimillion dollar business. It could literally be picking up shells. The point is you start. The longer you work for yourself the better you will get at it. Any idiot can open a business. Stupid people do it all the time.

The point is, if you get good at your wage cage, you will still be in a wage cage. If you get good at working for yourself, the sky's the limit. If you can't see the point of working for yourself, I don't know what to tell you.

Also my stocks are going fricking bonkers right now. Man you wanna see someone get fricking pissed? Show your stocks to your wife who slaves all day and still makes less than you doing absolutely nothing.

Goddamn it feels good to be the man. Looking back, I don't know why I was even working. When you don't have bills and you aren't buying shit to cope with the depression of working all day, you really are content barely spending anything. The AI bubble will burst soon when companies realize they'll never fix hallucinations and deterministic AI based on LLMs is not actually feasible. LLMs were never meant to be fully functional AI, hence google didn't think to put out their r&d as a product but OpenAI forced their hand with their smoke and mirrors gimmick. NYT just published an article ridiculing how bad 4o is. Not that I trust israelite york times but even mainstream media are getting fed up with the AI hype train and looking past the staged presentations from the LLM peddlers.

      Anonymous

LLM's are kind of like a symbol relation system as far as my understanding goes. To me it seems like it's a critical but not the only, piece of the puzzle when it comes to intelligent consciousness.

When I think about the important aspects of consciousness, what's clearly missing from these LLM's is basically a contextual understanding and decision-making system. As well as a predictive-modeling system. So in my opinion, to create an advanced functional AI one of the next steps you need for it past LLM's, is a way to simulate the universe and make predictions based off that internal simulation while fine-tuning and adjusting through a feedback loop when the internal simulation and prediction doesn't match the external results.

This should solve the hallucination problem.

What I find interesting is that this is exactly how Tesla's self-driving AI is being designed and trained, and as far as I'm aware, doesn't seem to have a sort of driving-hallucination like LLM's do when providing information.

        Anonymous

LLMs are not symbol relation systems, they are predictive models for language by design. Much as it bothers LLM fans to hear this, they are at heart glorified autocorrect in a sense. That's fine for the use cases they were originally designed for (NLP and computational linguistics). They work well in NLP tasks like text generation (which includes summarization and translation), named-entity resolution, sentiment resolution etc., because they don't have to be deterministic in order to be considered as good as the equivalent human counterpart. For problem-solving, internal representations are needed to perform logical analysis, mathematics, etc. All of which decades of research has gone into by specialists in other paradigms of AI research but they also had their own issues, mostly around being to narrow in its problem-solving scope and not being efficient. They could build some of those solutions from past research into their LLM models, but I think they haven't done that (or they have) because then LLMs face the same efficiency issues. Text generation can be done very fast, solving an intricate problem through layers of logical operations on the other hand will eat through compute time beyond any company's ability to fund.

But they all left and retired or became VC people or moved up into management and the folks who tried to fill their shoes weren't up to snuff. And this happened cumulatively over and over again, to the point where Google has to discontinue stuff because nobody knows how the code works and the 'jeets don't want to pay some guy who's now worth $50 million $8500 an hour to drive down and start poking at the code.

BTW almost none of these job loses are due to AI; they're due to the fact that the Fed raised interest rates from 0% which was the only reason that tech bubbled from 2008-2015 and again from 2020-now.
Tech giants could borrow money for free and massively overexpanded useless departments and offices. The growth of DEI sectors and its subsequent collapse is also due to the raising of federal interest rates. When you have basically free unlimited money you can keep borrowing and keep spending it on dumb useless shit that nobody wants.

      Anonymous

Also the reason why "startup" culture, ie creating a useless tech product with the goal of being bought out by Google, Facebook or Microsoft was only conceivable in the period between 2008-2015. MBAs with a programmer buddy could take a 0% interest rate loan to develop an app that tells you what colour your cat is, gambling on the eventuality of being bought out by a larger tech corp and repaying the loan in a couple years with a nice hefty profit. You can't do that shit anymore.

Yes AI is generally a meme in terms of workplace disruption. Even some of the stuff it CAN automate (sending and receiving boilerplate emails) still have to be reviewed by a person before sending. The only thing it's going to actually disrupt now and in the coming few years is graphic design/profitable creative type jobs. I don’t believe this, I’ve had a dirty old paint brush stolen. If I was a thief I steal a shovel before a paint brush.

That was 1999 in the south.

Dirty paint brush huh? I'm OK with burning everything down now.

Explain women then. Why are offices such as medical and dental staffed exclusively by low-skilled women who get paid a livable wage more than skilled men who work hard?

I don’t see blacks, jeets, or Asians working at offices or front desks. I see women. Cant blame immigrants for that shit.

I'm a nurse, starting my 4th job in july since a year ago. I like change and now I've finally landed a sweet night job. Working 30.5 hours a week for full pay, 3 shifts a week and the patients are sleeping. Gonna watch a lot if TV for above average national pay hehehhehehe but honestly I need it, second child coming soon and doing a shit tonne of repairs on the house. I go to work to rest

      >he works as a nurse
Not sure about Sweden, but a man working night shift at a hospital is absolute hell. You’re surrounded by the most c**ty, back-stabbing, narcissistic, cheating prostitutes on the planet, even if they’re white. Day shift just means that they’re prettier. The less attractive people work night jobs.

They really need male special needs assistants. I get paid to ecort autistic kids to and from school every day. I don't even drive them, just sit with them and make sure they're safe. 3hrs a day, 550 euro every two weeks. I get paid full rate when they need me to substitute classes. It's good money and the kids are based.

    >science R&D
This is the direct result of the destruction of the free market in the west. Regulates destroy competition.

Anyone who wants more government is a statist and a fricking idiot.

Nah, not much r&d is needed to wrangle 8 billion cattle.

R&D is needed to improve your quality of life. The industrial revolution is the result of R&D making labour saving devices that let you labor less for more money. E.g farmer with a hoe can farm a field, farmer with a tractor can farm a farm.

I still think you're some sort of shill. A quarter of your post over the last decade would have been money for anyone. It doesn't make sense. $12 an hour, I don't believe you. You seem smarter than that.

            I'm not. I'm just a regular guy.
            >A quarter of your post over the last decade would have been money for anyone.
If I knew how to "sell" my posts I'd do it.
            >It doesn't make sense.
A lot of things in this world don't make a whole lot of sense.
            >$12 an hour, I don't believe you.
Well, at least that's what I make after taxes and insurance.
            >You seem smarter than that.
Maybe. There's also the ever fleeting free time after work.

I got a job as an intern in tech beginning of my senior year of college and was working 2 jobs full time while in college prior to interning. I still graduated in the top of my class despite working 60+ hours a week. I graduated in 2019. I was making $67,500 base y1 and ~$75,000 y2 after school. I quit my job basically at the end of y2 after doubling my net post tax salary by investing each year i worked. While i was working i also started a business. This is my 4th full year in business for myself full time and i’m making $65/hour now from the total business gross. I’ve been applying for 2 years because working for someone else is easier & i want someone else to pay for my health insurance. The way i got past my prior earnings was realizing that it is EASIER to work for someone else so I developed the correct sub-contracting relationships. I have a clear path to $1000 a day net
